Lawrence tennis rolls to shutout of Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ill. — The Lawrence University women’s tennis team rolled to a 9-0 Midwest Conference shutout of Monmouth College on Saturday.

Lawrence (2-2, 2-1 MWC) got the match started by dropping just two games total in picking all three doubles victories. El Goblirsch and Alicia Lex posted an 8-0 win for Lawrence at No. 3 doubles.

Goblirsch and Lex were also perfect during singles play as Goblirsch won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5, and Lex was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at No. 6.

Rookie Alexis Shannon picked up her first two collegiate wins against Monmouth. Shannon teamed with Annie Harincar for an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles and followed that with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles.

Lex’s singles win lifts Vikings past Knox

GALESBURG, Ill. — Alicia Lex’s win at No. 6 singles lifted the Lawrence University women’s tennis team to a 5-4 Midwest Conference victory over Knox College on Friday at the Merdian Courts.

The Vikings led 4-2 in the match when Lex closed out a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sierra Henry to clinch the victory for Lawrence (1-2, 1-1 MWC). Katie Frankel won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and Lindsay Holsen was a 6-2, 6-0 winner for the Vikings at No. 2.

The Vikings grabbed a 2-1 lead over Knox (2-4, 1-1) after the doubles play. Frankel and Holsen were impressive 8-1 winners at No. 1, and Lex and Annie Harincar picked up an 8-6 victory at No. 2.

Fast Fact: Lawrence is coming off a good start to the season as the men took fourth and the women placed fifth at St. Norbert’s Tom Barry Invitational. Janusiak was third overall for the men, and Schrobilgen placed 12th to pace the women.

Series: Concordia leads the series 6-1-0 in a rivalry going back to 1987. Lawrence won the first meeting 6-1, but the Falcons have won the last six.

Last Meeting: The Falcons won 2-1 in overtime on Sept. 29, 2015, at the Banta Bowl.

Fast Fact: Lawrence is looking for its first win a season opener since the Vikings defeated George Fox 2-0 on Aug. 30, 2013. The Vikings are currently on a trip north of the border in Canada where they are scrimmaging several club teams.

Last Meeting: Carthage topped the Vikings 5-1 on Sept. 23, 2012, at Whiting Field West. This is the first meeting between Lawrence and Redlands.

Fast Fact: Lawrence’s health will be a key this season as the Vikings enter the 2016 campaign with 13 players. This is the first time any Lawrence team has played Redlands since the men’s basketball squad beat the Bulldogs 120-89 back in 2002-03.

Fast Fact: This is the only event this season where Lawrence will not run 8,000 meters for the men and 6,000 meters for the women. This marks the eighth consecutive season Lawrence has opened its season at the Tom Barry Invitational with all of those coming during the tenure of head coach Jason Fast.

Fast Fact: Presentation is a member of the NAIA and is in its fourth season of football. The Saints won four games a season ago. This is the first time Lawrence has played an NAIA opponent since it took on St. Francis back in 1987.

Lawrence men’s, women’s tennis honored again by ITA for academic achievement

APPLETON, Wis. — Both Lawrence University tennis teams and 14 players have claimed awards for academic achievement from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

The Vikings earned the ITA All-Academic Team award after the men posted a 3.34 grade point average and the women had a 3.32 GPA. A team needed a GPA of at least 3.20 for the 2015-16 academic year to be eligible for the award. This marks the third consecutive year the Vikings have earned both team awards, and that coincides with the tenure of Lawrence coach Steve Francour.

Seven members of each team earned ITA Scholar-Athlete awards. To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete status, a player needed a minimum 3.50 GPA for the 2015-16 academic year.

On the men’s side, seniors Adam Busch (Hales Corners, Wis./Greendale Martin Luther), Brian DeCorte (Southampton, Pa./William Tennent) and Ethan Perushek (Maple Grove, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret’s), junior David Jumes (Appleton, Wis./Xavier), sophomore Ben Tomhave (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet) and freshmen David Brooker (Appleton, Wis./North) and Kieran Laursen (Traverse City, Mich./West) all earned the Scholar-Athlete award.

Junior Katie Frankel (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield), sophomores Emma Arnesen (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South), Hailey Bomar (Menomonie, Wis./Menomonie) and Maralee Mindock (Kaukauna, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) and freshmen El Goblirsch (Minneapolis, Minn./Holy Angels), Cassandra Li (Zhengzhou, China/No. 1 Middle School) and Katie Nottberg (Loveland, Colo./Loveland) all earned the Scholar-Athlete award.

The Lawrence men finished the 2016 season with a 12-10 record in dual matches, took fourth in the Midwest Conference and qualified for the four-team MWC Tournament. The Lawrence women posted a 10-8 record and took sixth in the conference.

More than 150 Vikings named to Academic All-Midwest Conference team

MWClogoAPPLETON, Wis. — More than 150 Lawrence University student-athletes have been selected for the Academic All-Midwest Conference team.

The Vikings had 158 student-athletes meet the requirements for inclusion on the academic all-conference team. To be eligible for the team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.33 grade point average during the 2015-16 academic year.

Six Lawrence teams hit double digits with more than 10 student-athletes being honored. The top Lawrence team was women’s swimming and diving, which had 19 student-athletes make the cut. The top men’s team was soccer, which had 16 student-athletes chosen.

BLU Crew award winners to be selected Friday

APPLETON, Wis. — The first BLU Crew Awards will be selected Friday evening at the Warch Campus Center.

The inaugural event is sponsored by Lawrence University’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). SAAC will hand out 12 awards to its fellow Vikings and announce the All-Viking Team.

The event begins at 7 p.m. and is open to the public.

Abaray emerges from national search to lead Lawrence Department of Athletics

APPLETON, Wis. — Christyn Abaray is the new Lawrence University Director of Athletics, President Mark Burstein announced today.

Abaray takes over for Mike Szkodzinski, who announced this past spring he was stepping down to devote his full attention to coaching the Vikings’ ice hockey team. Abaray has served as director of athletics at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa, since June 2012.
