Birmingham Southern edges Vikings

ORLANDO, Fla. — A pair of super tiebreakers proved to be the difference as the Birmingham Southern College women’s tennis team downed Lawrence University 5-4 in a nonconference match on Sunday.

The Vikings had won the No. 1 doubles match, and Gayatri Malhotra (No. 3), Hannah Geoffrey (No. 4) and Polly Dalton (No. 5) all won in singles.

Birmingham Southern pulled out the victory by winning a super tiebreakers at both No. 1 and No. 6 singles.

Ninth-inning rally lifts Lawrence past Colby

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Lawrence University baseball team scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to edge Colby College 8-7 in a nonconference game Sunday.

The Mules had tied it with a run in the top of the ninth, but Sam Kossow led off the bottom of the ninth with a single for Lawrence (1-4). The Vikings attempted to bunt Kossow over to second, but the Mules were able to get the lead runner out on the play.

Pinch-runner Richie Foreman was at first and a balk moved him to second. Foreman stole third on the next pitch, and Colby intentionally walked Josh Graber and Joel Birch to load the bases. Alex Brewer then hit a grounder to shortstop, and the Mules forced out Birch at second but Brewer was safe at first. Foreman scored on the play to give Lawrence the victory.

Kossow led Lawrence’s 11-hit attack by going 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Birch went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs, and Davide Harris was 2-for-5 with two runs batted in.

Colby built a 6-2 lead through five innings, but Lawrence grabbed the lead with five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Kossow started the rally with a single, and a Marc Linger walk and Graber single loaded the bases. Birch then smacked a two-run double to cut the lead to 6-4. Darvis PridGeon then grounded out to drive in another run, and Harris followed with a two-run single to give Lawrence a 7-6 lead. 

Brewer pitched the final 1.2 innings to pick up his first collegiate victory for the Vikings. Freshman Davis Ogilvie made the start and went six innings. He allowed eight hits and only two earned runs while striking out five and walking three.

Trinity tops Lawrence in extra innings

CLERMONT, Fla. — Trinity (Conn.) College scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to pull out an 8-6 nonconference victory over Lawrence University on Saturday.

The Bantams scored all three runs in the eighth with two outs.

Lawrence (2-2) rallied for a run in the bottom half of the inning but couldn’t get anything else. Brielle Bartes, who went 2-for-4 with a double and a run batted in, scored on Cory Paquette’s one-out single to trim the lead to 8-6. After a strikeout, Alex Chiodo singled to put the tying run on base, but Alissa Geipel flied out to end the game.

Trinity led 1-0 early, but the Vikings tied the game with a run in the bottom of the second. Kara Vance singled, advanced on an error and scored on a groundout to tie the game at 1-1.

Trinity scored two times in the top of the third, but the Vikings tied it at 3-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Cathy Kaye, who finished 3-for-5 and drove in a run, started the rally with a single and then scored on Geipel’s triple. Geipel later scored on a wild pitch.

The Vikings took a 4-3 lead in the fourth when Bartes singled and later scored on Kaye’s single. The Bantams came right back and scored two runs in the top of the fifth to grab a 5-4 edge.

Lawrence tied it at 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth when Murray reached an error and later scored on Bartes’ single.

Vance took the loss in relief for the Vikings.

Lawrence rolls past Western New England

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Lawrence University softball team parlayed two big innings into a 9-1 nonconference win over Western New England University on Saturday.

Lawrence (2-1) scored four times in the third inning and five times in the fourth to pull away from Western New England.

Shannon Murray went the distance for Lawrence. She allowed seven hits, struck out three and didn’t walk a batter. Murray also drove in a pair of runs with a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly.

The Golden Bears scored once in the third, but the Vikings rallied for four runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Cory Paquette singled, Alissa Geipel walked and Alex Chiodo singled to load the bases for the Vikings. After a strikeout, Murray walked for drive in a run. Kara Vance followed with a sacrifice fly to score Geipel and give Lawrence a 2-1 lead. Western New England then misplayed a fly ball to allow two more runs to score and give Lawrence a 4-1 lead.

Emily Perish started Lawrence’s five-run rally in the fourth with a walk. After a popup, Alissa Geipel doubled and Alex Chiodo walked to load the bases. Cathy Kaye then blasted a bases-clearing triple to give Lawrence a 7-1 lead. Kaye finished 2-for-4 with three runs batted in.

After Murray’s sacrifice fly scored Kaye, a Vance single and an error put two runners aboard. Mary Diduch followed with a two-run double to give Lawrence a 9-1 edge.

 

Comeback comes up short for Vikings

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Lawrence University baseball team mounted a rally in the bottom of the ninth, but the Vikings came up one run short in a 9-8 nonconference loss to Lakeland College on Saturday.

Lakeland led 9-5 heading to the bottom of the ninth but the Vikings mounted a rally against Lakeland starter Andy Chitwood. After a walk and a strikeout, a dropped fly ball put two runners aboard for Gabe Henriques. Henriques delivered with a two-run triple to cut the lead to 9-7.

Trent Schwalbach came on in relief and got a ground out that scored Henriques to trim the lead to 9-8. Schwalbach then struck out pinch-hitter Marc Linger to end the contest.

Phil Wisniewski, Davide Harris, Eric Bohling and Josh Graber all had two hits to pace the Vikings (0-4). Wisniewski and Henriques drove in three runs apiece for Lawrence, which out-hit the Muskies (6-3) 12-11.

Lakeland put up two runs in the second, but the Vikings rallied for four runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-2 lead. Lakeland then scored a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to take a 6-4 lead. The Muskies added two more in sixth and another run in the eighth.

Drew Doares was the starter and took the loss for Lawrence. He went 5.1 innings, allowed eight hits and five earned runs while striking out seven.

North Park pulls away from Lawrence

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The North Park University baseball team built an early lead and went on to a 9-2 nonconference victory over Lawrence University on Saturday.

North Park, which collected 10 hits, scored three times in the first inning and built a 7-1 advantage after five frames. Lawrence scored single runs in the the fourth and sixth innings.

Lawrence, which was limited to five hits, was led by sophomore Sam Kossow, who went 2-for-4.

Paul Garcia pitched eight innings and picked up the win for North Park. Freshman Kelton Jenkins pitched the first three innings and took the loss for Lawrence (0-3).

Vikings pummel Staten Island in spring break opener

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Lawrence University men’s tennis team pummeled CUNY-Staten Island 8-1 in a nonconference match Saturday.

In the opening match of their spring break trip, the Vikings’ only loss came on an injury default.

Lawrence won all three doubles matches and all but one of the Vikings’ singles victories came in straight sets. Both Craig Sherwood at No. 5 singles and Jeremy Andereck at No. 6 won 6-0, 6-0.

Salve Regina edges Lawrence 3-2

CLERMONT, Fla. — Salve Regina University scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge Lawrence University 3-2 in a nonconference game on Friday.

With the score tied 2-2 and two outs, the Seahawks loaded the bases with the help of an error and an intentional walk in the final inning. A slow roller on the infield allowed the final hitter to reach base and the winning run to score.

Shannon Murray went the distance and took the loss for Lawrence. She allowed six hits, struck out six and walked four. All three runs scored by the Seahawks were unearned.

Lawrence, which had five hits, scored both of its runs in the fifth. Cory Paquette, who went 2-for-3, drove in both runs for the Vikings. Mary Diduch also went 2-for-3 for the Vikings.

 

Vikings top Anna Maria in season opener

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Lawrence University softball team downed Anna Maria College 8-2 Friday in the Vikings’ season opener.

The Vikings, who won their season opener for the third consecutive year, collected eight hits and had to rally from an early deficit.

Shannon Murray led Lawrence’s attack by going 3-for-4 with a double and a run batted in. Murray also pitched the first five innings to pick up the victory. She allowed only three hits, struck out eight and didn’t walk a batter.

Anna Maria scored a pair of unearned runs in the first, but Lawrence took the lead for good with three runs in the third. Alissa Geipel belted a run-scoring triple in the third, and Murray added a RBI double.

Lawrence made it 5-2 with a pair of runs in the fourth, highlighted by Mary Diduch’s run-scoring double. The Vikings then sealed the win with three more runs in the sixth.

Freshman Liz Barthels made her Lawrence pitching debut with a pair of scoreless innings.
