Muhs, Carlile take individual crowns, Lawrence women win team title at Gene Davis Invitational

Lawrence University cross country standouts Emily Muhs and Curran Carlile won the individual titles, and the Lawrence women took the team title at Saturday’s Gene Davis Invitational at Reid Golf Course.

Muhs covered the 6,000-meter course in 19:40.71 to win her first collegiate title by 59 seconds over Emily Barker of Mount Mary. Lawrence’s Annie Sullivan was third and Mary Kate Smith grabbed fourth. The Vikings rounded out their scoring with Alyssa Herman taking seventh and Amanda Dwyer grabbing 12th.

Lawrence won the team title with 26 points and UW-Whitewater was second with 49.

Carlile won his second event of the season and covered the 8,000-meter course in 26:22.89. Sam Stevens ran to a fifth-place finish and David Zane took sixth for the Vikings. Finishing the scoring for Lawrence were Tom Coben in 17th and Sam Estrem in 18th.

The Vikings finished second with 47 points, and Carthage took the team title with 32 points.

The event is named for legendary Lawrence coach Gene Davis, who coached the Vikings from 1956-91.

Lawrence downs St. Norbert; wins MWC North Division title

The Lawrence University women’s tennis team toppled St. Norbert College 6-3 on Friday to win the Midwest Conference North Division title.

Lawrence went 4-0 in North Division play and will be the top seed from the North in the Midwest Conference Tournament later this month. This marks the second time in three seasons that Lawrence has won the North Division. The Vikings also took the title in 2008.

The Vikings won two of the three doubles matches against the Green Knights on Friday and won the top four singles matches.

Vikings double up Ripon; clinch berth in MWC Tournament

The Lawrence University women’s tennis team topped Ripon College 6-3 on Wednesday in a Midwest Conference North Division match at the Lawrence Courts.

With the victory, Lawrence’s seventh consecutive win over the Red Hawks, the Vikings clinched a berth in the four-team Midwest Conference Tournament later this month in Madison, Wis.

Lawrence takes on St. Norbert College on Friday to determine the MWC North Division champion.

Vikings sweep past Mount Mary

The Lawrence University volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 nonconference victory over Mount Mary College on Tuesday night at Alexander Gymnasium.

The Vikings (9-11) defeated the Blue Angels (5-12) 25-13, 25-21, 25-23.

Clare Bohrer and Shannon McLain paced Lawrence with 12 kills apiece. Diane McLeod had a match-high 17 assists and picked up five kills.

Malhotra nets MWC Player of the Week award

Lawrence University women’s tennis standout Gayatri Malhotra has been named the Midwest

Conference Player of the Week.

Malhotra (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Verrado), a freshman, picked up the award after losing a total of just five games in a pair of singles matches against Midwest Conference South Division rivals.

Malhotra opened with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles over Monmouth College’s Joi Henry. She teamed with Kat Valde for an 8-0 victory over Ashley Lawrence at Laura Harrison at No. 3 doubles as part of the Vikings’ 8-1 victory over the Scots.

In an 8-1 victory over Knox College, Malhotra downed Molly Stein 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. She teamed with Valde for an 8-2 victory over Emily Tyl and Aimee Neilan at No. 3 doubles.

On the season, Malhotra improved to 7-5 in singles and 6-5 in doubles.

Lawrence, which leads the North Division with a 2-0 record, faces off against rival Ripon College on Wednesday at the Lawrence Courts. The match begins at 3 p.m.

Vikings take on Carroll in Fall Festival game

The Lawrence University football team returns to the Banta Bowl on Saturday to take on Carroll University in the Fall Festival game. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.

The newest members of the Lawrence Intercollegiate Athletic Hall of Fame also will be introduced at the football game. Damian LaCroix ’91, Matt Miota ’91, Brian Murphy ’99, Sara Schye Sechen ’00 and Alyssa Bonine Summers ’00 will be introduced at the half.

Burke named MWC Defensive Player of the Week

Lawrence University women’s soccer standout Cassie Burke has been named the Midwest Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

Burke (Golden Valley, Minn./Hopkins), a sophomore goalkeeper, earned the award after allowing only one goal in a pair of Midwest Conference road victories this past weekend.

Burke, who was chosen as a conference player of the week for the first time in her career, made three saves in Lawrence’s 3-0 victory at Knox College last Saturday. It was Burke’s third shutout of the season. Burke then made four saves in a 3-1 victory at Grinnell College on Sunday.

Burke posted an .875 save percentage and 0.50 goals against average for the two contests. She improved to 5-3-0 on the season and improved her save percentage to .762 and her goals against average to 1.25.

Lawrence, tied for first place in the MWC with 12 points, returns to action on Sunday when it travels to Carroll University.

Second-half goals by Koula, Ehlinger lift Lawrence past Grinnell

GRINNELL, Iowa — The Lawrence University women’s soccer team got a pair of second-half goals and posted a 3-1 Midwest Conference victory Sunday at Grinnell College.

Mallory Koula broke a 1-1 tie with her unassisted goal in the 66th minute. Sarah Ehlinger then sealed the victory for Lawrence with her second goal of the match five minutes later.

Cassie Burke made four saves to pick up the win for the Vikings.
