The Lawrence University women’s soccer team scored early but had to settle for a 1-1 double-overtime tie with Monmouth College on Saturday in a Midwest Conference game.
CJ Kirk for the Vikings in the fifth minute, but Monmouth’s Becca Baur countered for the Scots at the 20:31 mark of the first half. That was it for the scoring.
Cassie Burke made four saves for the Vikings, and Samantha Barranco made six saves for the Scots. Lawrence outshot Monmouth 16-11.
ROCKFORD, Ill. — The Lawrence University women’s tennis team placed fourth in the Midwest Conference Tournament on Friday at the Boylan Tennis Center.
Lawrence fell 5-1 to Lake Forest in the semifinals and then dropped a 5-2 decision to St. Norbert in the third-place match.
RIPON, Wis. — The Lawrence University volleyball team won the first set on Wednesday, but Ripon College stormed back to win the next three and post a 3-1 Midwest Conference win at the Storzer Center.
Clare Bohrer led Lawrence with 10 kills, and Shannon McLain added nine. Diane McLeod had 28 assists for the Vikings, and Kathleen Rowland paced Lawrence with 28 digs.
The Lawrence University football team takes the long trip to Grinnell College to face the Pioneers in a Midwest Conference game on Saturday.
Lawrence is coming off a 21-14 loss to Carroll, and Grinnell looks to rebound from a 31-21 loss at Knox.
Lawrence University women’s tennis standout Jenny Roesch has been named the Midwest Conference Player of the Week.
Roesch (Cedarburg, Wis./Grafton), a sophomore, was chosen after posting a perfect 4-0 week to lead Lawrence to to the Midwest Conference North Division title. Roesch went 2-0 at No. 2 singles and 2-0 at No. 1 doubles.
In a 6-3 victory over Ripon College, Roesch won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and teamed with Beth Larson (Maplewood, Minn./Mounds Park) for an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles. Lawrence clinched the division title with a 6-3 victory over St. Norbert, with Roesch posting a 6-2, 6-2 victory in singles and teaming with Larson for an 8-5 win in doubles.
Roesch, who was named the MWC Player of the Week for the first time in her career, improved to 8-6 in singles and 12-3 in doubles on the season.
Lawrence, which won the North Division for the second time in three seasons, takes on Lake Forest College in the MWC Tournament semifinals Friday morning in Rockford, Ill. Grinnell College faces St. Norbert College in the other semifinal and the winners meet for the conference championship in the afternoon.
Lawrence University cross country standout Curran Carlile has been named the Midwest Conference Performer of the Week.
Carlile (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic), a freshman, won his second individual title of the season as he raced to victory at Lawrence’s Gene Davis Invitational on Oct. 9.
Carlile covered the 8,000-meter course in 26:22.89 to beat Carthage College’s Jake Mahaffey by almost five seconds. Carlile, who also won the Tom Barry Invitational to start the season, pulled away from a pair of Carthage runners over the final 500 meters to set a course record at Reid Golf Course.
Led by Carlile, the Vikings placed second in the team standings.
Lawrence returns to action on Saturday when it travels to the UW-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational at Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne, Wis.
WAUKESHA, Wis. — The Carroll University men’s soccer team got a goal late in the first half to break a tie and then added a goal in the final minutes to post a 3-1 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Sunday.
Bennett Pang scored for the Vikings in the 19th minute but that was all the offense Lawrence could muster against the Pioneers.

Cody Callender scored twice for the Pioneers.
GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College volleyball team won three tight sets to post a 3-0 Midwest Conference win over Lawrence University on Saturday at Darby Gymnasium.
Grinnell edged the Vikings 25-23, 26-24, 25-23.
Clare Bohrer paced the Lawrence attack with 14 kills, and Shannon McLain and Emma Kane added six kills apiece.
A key defensive stand at the end of the first half allowed the Carroll University football team to head to the locker room with the lead on Saturday at the Banta Bowl, and the Pioneers made that lead stand up for a 21-14 Midwest Conference win over Lawrence University.
Drew Volkmann paced Carroll with 16 carries for 94 yards, and quarterback Chris Casper completed 18 of 30 passes for 223 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Luke Barthelmess was 19 of 41 passing for 263 yards and two touchdowns.
Lawrence (1-5, 1-4 MWC) had a touchdown taken off the board by an offensive pass interference penalty with 15 seconds left in the first half. Three plays later, on a fourth-and-goal play with seconds left in the first half, it looked as though Tyler Mazur was interfered with in the end zone, but no flag was thrown, and Carroll took over.
Carroll (5-1, 4-1) got deep into Lawrence territory only once in the second half, but the Pioneers missed a 37-yard field goal.
The first half was filled with scoring and Carroll took a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter. The Pioneers moved 73 yards in 10 plays, with Joe Beckstrand scoring on a 3-yard run.
Lawrence tied the game early in the second quarter. Barthelmess hit Jon Bruehl with a 13-yard pass and then connected with Jeremiah Johnson for 39 yards to the Carroll 16-yard line. Barthelmess then found Mazur in the end zone on the next play to tie the game at 7-7. Mazur caught five passes for 78 yards for the Vikings.
Volkmann did nearly all the damage for Carroll on its next possession to set up a touchdown. He ran four times for 29 yards and Casper then hit Beau LeFevre on a 28-yard scoring pass for a 14-7 Carroll lead.
Lawrence countered on its next drive to tie the game again. Bruehl caught a long pass from Barthelmess, dodged a Carroll defender and scored from 47 yards out to tie the game at 14-14. Bruehl finished the game with four catches for 77 yards.
Carroll also scored its next possession to take the lead for good. The Pioneers moved 60 yards in nine plays, with Beckstrand scoring from five yards out with 2:01 left in the first half.
After Carroll missed the field goal late in the fourth quarter, Lawrence couldn’t move the ball and was forced to punt. The Vikings forced a three-and-out, but Barthlemess was sacked on the first play of the final drive and Mike Dziewit recovered to seal the win for Carroll.
The Lawrence defense was paced by Sam Wagner, who recorded a game-high 13 tackles, and Jeff Nichols, who had 10 stops.
Lawrence returns to action next Saturday when it travels to Grinnell College.
