St. Norbert shuts out Vikings

GREEN BAY, Wis. — The St. Norbert College women’s tennis team shut out Lawrence University 9-0 on Sunday in a Midwest Conference North Division match at Western Racquet Club.

Lawrence finished the regular season with a mark of 7-9 and finished 1-3 in Midwest Conference North Division play.

Penalty kick lifts Eagles over Lawrence 1-0

APPLETON, Wis. — A penalty kick in the second half was the difference as the UW-La Crosse women’s soccer team downed Lawrence University 1-0 in a nonconference match on Sunday at Whiting Field West.

The game was scoreless until Lawrence was whistled for a handball in the penalty box at 76:05. Jamie Ochsenwald converted the penalty kick to give the Eagles (3-8-1) the lead for good.

Ashley Tracy made three saves for La Crosse to earn the shutout. Dani Glass made eight saves for the Vikings (3-7-1).

Lawrence shuts out Bucs 4-0

BELOIT, Wis. — The Lawrence University men’s soccer team scored two goals early in the second half and rolled to a 4-0 Midwest Conference win over Beloit College on Saturday.

Lawrence (5-6-1, 3-2-0 MWC) led 1-0 at the half, and then scored two goals in the first four minutes of the second half to pull away.

The Vikings had the lead at the half thanks to Santiago Alvarez’s goal in the 19th minute. Lawrence made it 2-0 when Charlie Mann scored off a pass from Mike Deremo at 46:08.

Lawrence stretched the lead to 3-0 at 48:43 when Chris Kiehl scored off another pass from Deremo. Stephen Salansky then scored on a penalty kick in the 74th minute to cap the scoring.

Lawrence posted a 21-12 edge in shots over the Bucs (0-10-1, 0-4-0)

Goalkeeper Joe Krivit made seven saves to earn the shutout for the Vikings.

Vikings forge tie with Beloit

BELOIT, Wis. — The Lawrence University women’s soccer team went on the road Saturday and picked up a 2-2 overtime tie with Beloit College in a Midwest Conference match.

The Vikings (3-6-1, 2-3-1 MWC) dominated the play and fired 32 shots at the Bucs (2-9-1, 0-4-1).

Lawrence got on the board first when Keli Muchowski scored on a penalty kick in the 20th minute. The lead didn’t last as Beloit struck back with a little more than five minutes so the teams went to the break tied at 1-1.

Casey Merkle gave Lawrence the lead back just 24 seconds into the second half when she scored off a pass from Liza Girsova. Beloit tied it again on Felicia Carlson’s goal in the 69th minute.

Dani Glass stopped 13 shots for Lawrence, and Alex Spirov had 19 saves for the Bucs.

Pioneers race away from Lawrence

WAUKESHA, Wis. — The Carroll University football team pulled out to a big early lead and went on to a 48-14 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Saturday at Schneider Stadium.

Carroll (3-3, 2-3 MWC) led 13-0 after the first quarter and scored four second-quarter touchdowns to race to a 41-0 lead at the half.

Running back Lamont Williams powered the Carroll offense by running 19 times for 216 yards and four touchdowns. Williams, who had touchdown runs of 10, one, 83 and 12 yards, averaged 11.4 yards per carry.

The Pioneers threw only nine passes in the game as they ran for 314 yards as a team.

Lawrence (0-5, 0-5) was limited to only 235 yards against a stout Carroll defense. Quarterback Luke Barthelmess was 8 of 16 passing for 81 yards and a touchdown. Halfback Dalton Sendelbach ran 24 times for 94 yards to lead Lawrence’s ground game.

After Williams put the Pioneers up 27-0 with his 83-yard touchdown run in the late in the second quarter, Ty Zimmerman blocked a punt and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown. Williams then added another touchdown run to put the Pioneers in command at the break.

Lawrence got on the board with cornerback Zach Eichhorst’s first career touchdown. The sophomore picked off Tyler Schovanec’s pass and returned it 41 yards for a touchdown to cut the lead to 48-7.

Lawrence added its final touchdown midway through the fourth quarter when Barthelmess capped a 14-play, 68-yard drive with a 13-yard scoring pass to Dan Dubnicka. Dubnicka finished with three catches for 35 yards.

Lawrence returns to action next Saturday when it hosts St. Norbert College.

Vikings romp past Illinois College

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 Midwest Conference win over Illinois College on Saturday at Alexander Gymnasium.

The Vikings (7-13, 3-2 MWC) romped past the Lady Blues (3-15, 0-5) 25-16, 25-14, 25-17.

Terese Swords paced the Lawrence attack with 16 kills and the Vikings hit .324 as a team. Betsy Sorensen and Kayla Storm added eight kills apiece with Megan Conley and Andrea Wilkinson chipping in six and five kills, respectively.

Diane McLeod piled up 36 assists for the Vikings, and Kathleen Rowland had a match-high 16 digs.

Alese Speckhart led Illinois College with seven kills.

Edgewood nips Vikings 2-1

MADISON, Wis. — A penalty kick in the 58th minute proved to be the difference as the Edgewood College women’s soccer team downed Lawrence University 2-1 in a nonconference match on Wednesday at Breese Stevens Field.

Jenna Mineau broke a 1-1 tie when she coverted a penalty kick for the Eagles (9-2-1) at 57:58.

Edgewood had grabbed a 1-0 lead just 2:45 into the match when Jennifer Dailey scored. That lead didn’t last long as Casey Merkle scored off a cross from Anita Babbitt at the 4:05 mark.

Tori Fortney made two saves to pick up the win for Edgewood, which had a 12-4 advantage in shots. Dani Glass stopped five shots for the Vikings.

Edgewood downs Vikings

MADISON, Wis. — The Edgewood College men’s soccer team scored three first-half goals and went on to a 4-0 nonconference victory Lawrence University on Tuesday night at Breese Stevens Field.

Edgewood (7-4-1) got goals in the ninth, 34th and 44th minutes to take control.

The Eagles had a 10-9 edge in shots over the Vikings (4-6-1).

Vikings shut out Ripon

RIPON, Wis. — The Lawrence University volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 Midwest Conference victory over Ripon College on Tuesday night at the Storzer Center.

The Vikings beat Ripon 25-22, 25-13, 25-22.

Terese Swords pounded out 14 kills and Kayla Storm added 11 for Lawrence (7-13, 2-2 MWC), which hit .241 for the match. Setter Diane McLeod posted a match-high 39 assists, and Kathleen Rowland picked up 13 digs for the Vikings.

Allison Barnes paced Ripon (10-12, 2-1)  with 10 kills, which was limited to a .101 hitting percentage by the Lawrence defense.

Bucs down Lawrence 7-2

APPLETON, Wis. — The Beloit College women’s tennis team won a tight doubles match and two three-set singles matches to post a 7-2 Midwest Conference North Division match over Lawrence University on Sunday.

The Bucs (7-7, 2-2 MWC North) won 9-7 at No. 1 doubles and then won three-set matches at No. 4 and No. 6 singles to earn the victory.

Gayatri Malhotra and Polly Dalton were 8-6 winners for Lawrence (7-8, 1-2) at No. 2 doubles, and Melissa Heeren won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5 singles.
