Pioneers rally to tip Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. — The Carroll University men’s soccer team scored three goals in the final 17 minutes to rally for a 3-1 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Sunday at Whiting Field West.

Lawrence (4-5-1, 2-2-0 MWC) had taken a 1-0 lead on a beautiful goal from Max Loebl at 72:20. Loebl scored off assists from Mike Deremo and Erik Soderlund.

Less than a minute later, Carroll (7-3-1, 3-0-0) was awarded a free kick after a foul about 25 yards from the goal. The Pioneers took what amounted to a quick kick while Lawrence was setting up its defensive wall and scored on Mark Gore’s goal at 73:02 to tie the match at 1-1.

Carroll was on the attack again, this time down the left sideline when Lawrence defender Aaron Sutton went down. That opened up a lane of attack for Carroll and Liam Michener got tangled up with a Lawrence defender in the penalty box. A penalty kick was awarded and Michener converted to give Carroll a 2-1 lead at 74:43.

Dan Czernicki added the final goal off a scramble in front of the net in the 86th minute.

Jacob Tichner made two saves for Carroll, and Joe Krivit stopped 10 shots for the Vikings.
