Deremo scores twice as Vikings top Monmouth

APPLETON, Wis. — Michael Deremo scored a pair of goals and added an assist to lead the Lawrence University men’s soccer team to a 4-1 Midwest Conference win over Monmouth College on Saturday.

Deremo, a freshman forward, scored a pair of goals in the first half to stake the Vikings to a 2-0 edge at the break. Charlie Mann and Stephen Salansky both added goals in the second half to seal the win for Lawrence (4-4-1, 2-1-0 MWC).

Deremo scored off a pass from fellow freshman Jack Blodgett to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead at the 28:06 mark. Deremo got his second goal at 38:32 when he fielded a punt from goalkeeper Joe Krivit, beat several Monmouth defenders and scored.

Mann scored off an assist from Deremo at 56:41 to give Lawrence a 3-0 edge. Isaac Hernandez scored for the Scots (1-8-1, 0-3-0) at 73:26, but Salansky countered that with a goal off a penalty kick at 79:20 to finish the scoring.

Krivit stopped six shots to pick up the win for Lawrence. Matt Schmidt made two saves for the Scots.

Scots tip Lawrence in overtime

APPLETON, Wis. — Kelsi Smith scored less than four minutes into overtime on Saturday to lift the Monmouth College women’s soccer team to a 2-1 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University.

Smith scored off a cross from Unique Manns at 93:37 to keep the Scots (6-3-0, 3-0-0 MWC) unbeaten in conference play. Lawrence (2-5-0, 1-3-0) had battled back to force the extra period.

Lawrence trailed 1-0 after Andrea Correa’s goal in the 35th minute, but the Vikings tied it just 2:28 into the second half. Anita Babbitt scored off assists from Casey Merkle and Caroline Borst to make the score 1-1.

Samantha Barranco made four saves for the Scots, who had a 25-8 edge in shots. Dani Glass stopped 12 shots for the Vikings.

Vikings soar past UW-River Falls

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University women’s tennis team rolled to an 8-1 nonconference victory over UW-River Falls on Saturday at the Lawrence Courts.

Lawrence (7-5) swept the doubles matches and then took the top five singles matches.

The Vikings got the day started with three wins in doubles as Hannah Geoffrey and Ali Heiring won at No. 1, Polly Dalton and Gayatri Malhotra won at No. 2 and Katie Frankel and Allison Juda won at No. 3.

Malhotra (No. 1), Geoffrey (No. 2), Heiring (No. 3), Frankel (No. 4) and Dalton (No. 5) all won in singles. Frankel, a freshman playing her first collegiate singles match, picked her first career singles victory.

Hutchings, Laursen pace Vikings at Griak Invitational

FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. — Freshman Amy Hutchings and sophomore Jonah Laursen were the top finishers on Saturday for the Lawrence University cross country teams at the Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota.

Hutchings finished 70th to lead the Lawrence women to 14th place in the team standings with 428 points. Laursen was 51st and lead the Lawrence men to a 15th-place finish with 381 points.

Hutchings covered the 6,000-meter course in 24:51.8 to pace the Vikings. Clare Bruning was next for Lawrence as she took 73rd in 24:53.9. Also scoring for Lawrence were Liz Landes (78th, 25:00.2), Katherine Dannecker (99th, 25:27.7) and Kristen Bischel (108th, 25:36.2).

Laursen finished the 8,000-meter course in 27:46.7 as he continues his outstanding season. Kyle Dockery was close behind as he finished 64th in 28:07.0. Rounding out the scoring for Lawrence were Curran Carlile (76th, 28:22.2), Cam Davies (81st, 28:27.2) and Dan Thoresen (109th, 29:22.5).

Wartburg College won the women’s team title with 63 points, and UW-Eau Claire won the men’s title with 69 points.

Rowland breaks career digs record but Vikings fall to Carroll

WAUKESHA, Wis. — Lawrence University volleyball standout Kathleen Rowland broke the school’s career digs record on Wednesday night, but the Vikings dropped their Midwest Conference opener to Carroll University 3-0 at Van Male Fieldhouse.

Carroll (9-6, 1-0 MWC) defeated the Vikings (5-11, 0-1) 25-19, 25-15, 25-17.

Rowland finished the night with 19 digs and now has 1,922 for her career. She broke the record of 1,908, which was set by Jenny Burris from 2000-03.

Kayla Storm and Terese Swords paced the Vikings with seven kills apiece. Diane McLeod had 21 assists and 10 digs for Lawrence.

Olsson paces Vikings at UWEC Invitational

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — Anton Olsson tied for 16th place to lead the Lawrence University golf team at the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Invitational.

The Vikings finished 14th in the 36-hole event with a team score of 665. The Vikings carded rounds of 338 and 327.

Olsson fired rounds of 77 and 76 on the par-71 layout at the Eau Claire Country Club. His total of 153 was 11 shots off the winning total of Andrew Peter of Luther College.

Rudi Pino was the other top finisher for the Vikings. Pino posted two rounds of 78 for a total of 156, and he tied for 30th place.

Penalty kick gives Knox win over Lawrence

GALESBURG, Ill. — The Knox College men’s soccer team scored on a penalty kick to pull out a 1-0 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Sunday.

Max Gatyas scored on the penalty kick in the 41st minute for the only goal of the match.

Knox (9-1-0, 2-0-0 MWC) enjoyed a 13-5 edge in shots over Lawrence (3-4-1, 1-1-0).

Sean Dockrell made one save to pick up the win for the Prairie Fire. Joe Krivit made four saves for the Vikings.

Muchowski’s hat trick leads Lawrence past Prairie Fire

GALESBURG, Ill. — Keli Muchowski recorded her first career hat trick to lead the Lawrence University women’s soccer team to a 3-1 Midwest Conference victory over Knox College on Sunday.

Lawrence (2-4-0, 1-1-0 MWC) took a 1-0 lead when Muchowski scored off an assist from Anita Babbitt at the 20:18 mark.

The score stayed that way until early in the second half when Muchowski scored off a pass from Casey Merkle for a 2-0 Lawrence lead. The Prairie Fire cut the lead to 2-1 in the 60th minute, but Lawrence answered.

Muchowski completed the hat trick when she took a pass from Merkle and scored at 65:56 to put the Vikings up 3-1.

Lawrence goalkeeper Dani Glass made one save to pick up the win. Lawrence had a 20-4 edge in shots

Edgewood downs Lawrence 3-1

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — The Edgewood College volleyball team won a couple of tight sets and went on to a 3-1 nonconference win over Lawrence University on Saturday at the Cardinal Stritch Triangular.

Edgewood won 25-19, 27-25, 19-25, 25-23.

Megan Conley led three Lawrence players in double figures in kills with 14. Kayla Storm added 13 kills and Betsy Sorensen had 10 for the Vikings.

Diane McLeod piled up 43 assists, and Kathleen Rowland had a match-high 33 digs for Lawrence.

Beloit pulls away from Vikings in second half

BELOIT, Wis. — The Lawrence University football team didn’t score in the second half Saturday, and Beloit College pulled away for a 38-21 Midwest Conference victory over the Vikings at Strong Stadium.

The teams went to halftime tied 21-21.

Running back Mason Dixon ran 12 times for 200 yards and three touchdowns to lead Beloit (1-2, 1-1 MWC), which snapped a 13-game losing streak. It was all or next-to-nothing for Dixon, who had runs of 56, 48, 42, 18 and 16 yards but had a combined 21 yards on his other seven carries.

Lawrence quarterback Luke Barthelmess had 26 carries for 76 yards and completed 15 of 30 passes for 153 yards and a touchdown. Running back Isaac Barthelmess ran 15 times for 63 yards for the Vikings (0-3, 0-3).

Beloit led 7-0 on the first play from scrimmage when Kameron Sallee hit Michael Nolden with a 50-yard touchdown pass. Lawrence answered back after a short punt by the Bucs gave the Vikings the ball at the Beloit 36-yard line.

Luke Barthelmess connected with Dan Dubnicka on a 30-yard completion to the Beloit six, and Isaac Barthelmess scored on the next play to tie it at 7-7.

Beloit took a 14-7 lead on Dixon’s 16-yard scoring run, but Lawrence scored the next 14 points. The Vikings moved 58 yards in seven plays for a touchdown to tie the game 14-14 in the second quarter. Isaac Barthelmess’ two-yard touchdown run finished the drive.

After an on-sides kick was recovered by the Vikings, Lawrence drove in for another touchdown. After Dalton Sendelbach’s 18-yard run gave the Vikings a first down at the Beloit 10, Luke Barthelmess hit linebacker Andy Paider, who plays offense on Lawrence’s “jumbo” package, with a touchdown pass for a 21-14 lead.

Beloit used a big kickoff return to answer back and scored just two plays later for a 21-21 tie at the half. The Bucs used a big run by Dixon to set up a field goal and take a 24-21 lead. Dixon then ripped off touchdown runs of 48 and 42 yards in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Lawrence, which got into Beloit territory only twice in the second half, dominated the time of possession 41:58-18:02.
