Vikings rally in final period to top Finlandia

Lawrence University scored four times in the final 13 minutes on Friday to rally for a 5-2 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Finlandia University at the Appleton Family Ice Center.

Lawrence (10-9-3, 9-5-3 MCHA) trailed 2-1 after Finlandia (7-14-0, 7-10-0) scored early in the third, but the Vikings exploded to score the game’s final four goals.

Lawrence enjoyed a 58-25 edge in shots, but the Vikings managed only one goal through the first two periods. Phil Bushbacher’s goal at 1:51 of the second gave the Vikings a 1-0 lead, but Finlandia scored late in the second period to tie it and 2:16 into the third to take the lead.

William Thoren’s power-play goal for the Vikings at the 8:39 mark of the third tied the score at 2-2. Lawrence finished 1-for-7 on the power play. Finlandia was 0-for-4.

The Vikings then grabbed the lead on Paul Zuke’s goal at the 13:13 mark. Lawrence quickly poured it on when Sam Johnson scored just over a minute later at 14:19 to grab a 4-2 advantage.

The Lions then pulled goaltender Mike Wuthrich, and Lawrence’s Matt Hughes scored an empty-net goal just eight seconds later to give Lawrence a 5-2 lead with just 1:25 left.

Peter Emery made 23 saves and picked up his 10th win of the season for the Vikings. Wuthrich made 53 saves and took the loss.

The two teams wrap up the series on Saturday afternoon.

Lawrence rolls past Sabres to win Battle of Highway 41

FOND DU LAC, Wis. — Lawrence University got off to a fast start and rolled to a 6-2 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Marian University on Saturday afternoon at the Blue Line Ice Center.

The victory capped a weekend sweep of the Sabres and gave Lawrence the trophy in the Battle of Highway 41 series. Lawrence also moved into a first-place tie with the Sabres in the MCHA Northern Division.

Brad Scurfield and Huck Saunders scored two goals apiece for the Vikings (9-9-3, 8-5-3 MCHA), and Gustav Lindgren and Erik Soderlund both had two assists.

Scurfield scored just 10 seconds into the game off passes from Matt Hughes and Soderlund to stake the Vikings to a 1-0 lead. Saunders added a goal just two minutes later, and the Vikings were up 2-0.

Lawrence made it 3-0 at the 12:17 mark of the first when Saunders scored off a pass from Paul Zuke.

Marian got goals from Brendan Roberts and Chris Thompson in the second period to trim the margin to 3-2. Phil Bushbacher then scored a power-play goal as time expired in the second period to give Lawrence a 4-2 lead heading into the second intermission.

Lawrence sealed the win on Hughes’ power-play goal just 4:56 into the final period. Scurfield then added the final goal at the 11:36 mark.

Peter Emery stopped 25 shots to pick up the victory for the Vikings. Josh Baker made the start and took the loss after playing the first two periods for Marian (9-8-4, 8-5-3).

Lawrence piled up a 45-27 edge in shots.

Lawrence returns to action next weekend when its hosts Finlandia University in a weekend series.

Vikings edge Illinois College

Andrew Kline scored a pair of key baskets down the stretch, and the Lawrence University men’s basketball team got a big defensive stop to down Illinois College 77-76 in a Midwest Conference game on Saturday at Alexander Gymnasium.

Chris Siebert paced Lawrence (8-11, 7-8 MWC) with 24 points. Tyler Crisman added 14 points for the Vikings, and Ryan DePouw had 11.

Brandon Berry led Illinois College (4-14, 2-12) with 17 points, and Zeke Light added 14.

In a game that featured 13 lead changes and 10 ties, neither team led by more than four points. The game was tied at 68-68 after Light hit a 3-pointer with 3:56 remaining.

Kline countered for the Vikings by burying a 15-foot jumper to give Lawrence a 70-68 edge. After a Craig Bals free throw trimmed the lead to one with 2:16 left, Kline scored on a layup off a great pass from DePouw to put the Vikings up 72-69 with 1:49 left.

Bals countered with a layup for the Blueboys to cut the lead to 72-71 with 1:27 left. Conor Klusendorf was fouled and hit a pair of free throws for the Vikings with 1:00 left, but Berry’s layup cut the margin to 74-73 with 47 seconds left.

Crisman was then fouled and hit one free throw with 18 seconds left to give Lawrence a 75-73 lead. Light then attempted a 3-pointer with eight seconds left, but it was off the mark and Brian Gryszkiewicz grabbed the rebound for Lawrence.

Gryszkiewicz made both free throws with five seconds left to put Lawrence up 77-73, and Spencer Campbell then hit a 3-pointer for the Blueboys with 1.4 seconds left. The Vikings were able to inbound the ball and run out the clock.

Lawrence returns to action on Feb. 11 when it hosts Beloit College.

Lady Blues hold off Lawrence

The Illinois College women’s basketball team turned back a Lawrence University rally on Saturday and posted a 65-54 Midwest Conference victory on Saturday at Alexander Gymnasium.

Hannah McGinnis had a double-double with 22 points and 14 rebounds to lead Illinois College (7-12, 7-7 MWC). Holly Wohltman added 11 points for the Lady Blues.

Alex Deshler paced Lawrence (1-19, 1-14) with 17 points, and Chioma Ejimkonye added 11 points.

Illinois College led by as many as seven points in the first half, but the Vikings trimmed that margin to 30-28 at the break. Lawrence opened the second half with back-to-back 3-pointers from Deshler and Amber Lisowe, and Deshler then hit another jumper to take a 36-32 lead with 17:58 left.

Lawrence still led 43-42 before Brittany Williams’ layup with 10:19 left started an Illinois College rally. The Lady Blues scored the game’s 11 points, capped by Paige Cullison’s 3-pointer, to take a 53-43 lead with 7:22 left.

Lawrence answered with back-to-back baskets from Aubrey Lawlor and Jessica Robbins to trim the margin to 53-47. The Lady Blues then countered by scoring the next six points, and Lawrence got no closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Lawrence returns to action on Feb. 11 when the Vikings host Beloit College.

Vikings top Marian in overtime thriller

Matt Hughes scored with 10 seconds left in overtime Friday night to lift Lawrence University to a 4-3 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Marian University at the Appleton Family Ice Center.

Hughes took the puck from a Marian defender behind the net, and his wraparound goal gave Lawrence (8-9-3, 7-5-3 MCHA) the victory. The game was part of the third annual Battle of Highway 41 series, which wraps up Saturday in Fond du Lac.

Hughes and Gustav Lindgren both scored twice for the Vikings, who had to rally twice just to force the overtime. Peter Emery stopped 50 shots to earn the victory for Lawrence. Randy Willis stopped 35 shots for Marian (9-7-4, 8-4-4) and took the loss.

Marian jumped out to a 2-0 lead just 11:07 into the contest on goals from Bryce Wilson and Matt Berger. The Vikings cut the lead in half on Lindgren’s goal off a pass from Jameson Raymond 5:18 into the second period. Lawrence then tied it just 11 seconds into the third period when Hughes scored off passes from Brad Scurfield and Phil Bushbacher.

Marian grabbed a 3-2 lead when Brendan Roberts scored at the 8:09 mark of the third. Lawrence tied it with 3:07 left when Lindgren scored off assists from Raymond and Sam Johnson.

Marian had taken the only five shots of the overtime when Hughes netted the game-winner with just 10 ticks left.

Lake Forest edges Vikings in overtime

The Lake Forest College men’s basketball team hit its final four shots from the floor in overtime and posted a 66-58 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Friday night at Alexander Gymnasium.

Travis Clark scored 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Lake Forest (17-2, 13-1 MWC). Jeff Beck and James Stack added 12 points apiece.

Tyler Crisman scored 16 of his team-high 18 points for Lawrence (7-11, 6-8) in the first half. Chris Siebert added 15 points for the Vikings and Ryan DePouw had 10.

Lake Forest got a jumper from Nate Bateman and a layup from Drew Grennell to take a 58-54 lead early in the overtime. After a pair of free throws from Crisman, Lake Forest scored the game’s next six points, including a three-point play from Stack, to take a 64-56 lead with 1:35 left.

Siebert then hit a pair of free throws to trim the margin to 64-58 with 1:10 remaining, but that’s as close as the Vikings would get.

Lawrence led by as many as nine in the first half, and Lake Forest rallied to lead by as many as four points after the break. The game was tied at 50-50 when DePouw hit a jumper with 3:01 left to put Lawrence up by two.

Clark countered with a layup to tie it for the Foresters, but Siebert drained two free throws with 1:21 left to give Lawrence a 54-52 lead. Clark scored on another layup with 1:08 left to tie it at 54-54, but neither team could score after that.

The Vikings turned the ball over, and Lake Forest missed three tap-ins in the final seconds to force the overtime.

Lawrence returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Illinois College.

Fast start shoots Lake Forest past Lawrence

The Lake Forest College women’s basketball team got off to a fast start Friday and posted a 79-37 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University at Alexander Gymnasium.

Lake Forest (9-9, 8-6 MWC) scored the game’s first 15 points and raced out to a 31-point halftime lead at 48-17. The Foresters would go on to lead by as many as 45 points in the second half.

Danielle Canulli came off the bench to lead Lake Forest with 15 points. Sam Schuring added 14 points for the Foresters, and Gina Ambrose pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.

Alex Deshler paced Lawrence (1-18, 1-13) with 13 points and six rebounds. Amber Lisowe added 11 points for the Vikings.

Lawrence returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Illinois College at Alexander Gymnasium.

Lawrence shoots down Red Hawks

The Lawrence University men’s basketball team used a balanced attack and good shooting to down Ripon College 85-81 in a Midwest Conference game on Tuesday night at Alexander Gymnasium.

Chris Siebert scored 19 of his 21 points in the second half to pace five Lawrence players in double figures. Tyler Crisman added 16 points for the Vikings (7-10, 6-7 MWC), and Davis DeWolfe added 15. Conor Klusendorf and Ryan DePouw added 14 points apiece, and Klusendorf had a team-high nine rebounds.

Aris Wurtz and Taylor Koth did nearly all the damage for Ripon (12-6, 8-5). Wurtz had a double-double with 34 points and 11 rebounds, and Koth added 30 points and 13 rebounds.

Lawrence, which shot 54.7 percent for the game and 40.7 percent on 3-pointers, led by as many as 12 points in the first half, but Ripon rallied to trim the margin to 37-32 at the half.

Ripon went on a 9-2 run midway through the second half to take a 60-57 lead with 11:51 left. Lawrence answered with a 3-pointer from Siebert, a layup from DeWolfe and 3-pointer from DePouw to grab a 65-60 lead with 10:04 remaining.

After a jumper from Koth, Lawrence got back-to-back 3-pointers from Siebert and a free throw from Tyler Mazur to take a 72-62 lead with 6:44 left.

Ripon slowly worked the lead down to only three points at 76-73 with 1:07 left, but the Vikings then sealed the victory at the foul line. Lawrence went 9-for-10 from the line in the final 38 seconds to seal the victory.

Siebert did see his streak of 42 consecutive made free throws snapped in the second half.

Lawrence returns to action on Friday when it hosts Lake Forest College.

Red Hawks hold off Lawrence

The Ripon College women’s basketball team held off a spirited second-half comeback by Lawrence University and posted a 57-42 Midwest Conference victory on Tuesday at Alexander Gymnasium.

Katie Raymond scored 20 points and Jill Van Eperen added 14 to pace Ripon (8-10, 7-6 MWC).

Amber Lisowe led the Vikings with 17 points. Alex Deshler added 10 points and seven rebounds for Lawrence (1-17, 1-12).

Ripon led by as many as 17 points in the first half, but the Vikings were able to trim that to 30-18 at the half. The Red Hawks pushed the lead back to 15 at 37-22 before Lawrence started chipping away.

Lawrence went on a 13-4 run, capped by Lisowe’s 3-pointer, to close to within 41-35 with 9:37 remaining. Ripon moved the lead back to 10 points, but Lisowe hit another 3-pointer and Deshler followed with a jumper to cut the margin to 45-40 with 5:04 remaining.

Ripon then scored the game’s next six points to take a 51-40 lead with 2:53 left. The Vikings answered with a jumper from Cathy Kaye but could get no closer.

Late heroics give Vikings weekend sweep of Northland

ASHLAND, Wis. — The Lawrence University hockey team scored two goals in the final 25 seconds to rally for a 3-2 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Northland College on Saturday at the Bay Area Civic Center.

The dramatic finish allowed Lawrence (7-9-3, 6-5-3 MCHA) to complete a weekend sweep of the Lumberjacks (6-10-3, 5-7-2). Lawrence beat Northland 3-0 on Friday night.

Lawrence trailed 2-1 and had pulled goaltender Peter Emery late in the game. Freshman Gustav Lindgren scored off an assist from Brad Scurfield with an extra attacker on the ice to tie the game at 2-2 with 25 seconds left.

The Vikings then scored the game-winning goal just nine seconds later as Sam Johnson found the back of the net with 16 seconds remaining. William Thoren and Matt Hughes both picked up assists on that goal.

Northland had taken a 1-0 at the 15:57 mark of the first, but the Vikings tied it when Nate Scurfield scored off an assist from his brother, Brad, at the 19:38 mark. The score stayed that way until Chad Liley gave Northland a 2-1 lead at the 1:25 mark of the third.

Emery stopped 29 shots to pick up the win. Ian Perrier made 28 saves and took the loss.
