Big second half powers Vikings past Carroll

WAUKESHA, Wis. — The Lawrence University men’s basketball team rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit and went on to a 98-88 Midwest Conference victory over Carroll University on Saturday at Van Male Field House.

Davis DeWolfe paced seven Vikings (6-10, 5-7 MWC) in double figures with a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds. Chris Siebert led Lawrence with 18 points, and Max Burgess added 15.

Alec Molter led Carroll (9-7, 5-6) with 21 points.

Carroll came out hot and shot 65.5 percent (19-29) from the floor in the first half to build a 48-38 lead at the break.

It took Lawrence only 3:20 into the second half to erase that deficit. The Vikings went on a 15-4 run to open the half and grabbed a 53-52 lead with 16:40 left. Siebert scored seven points during that outburst.

The Vikings kept the momentum going and pushed the lead to 64-54 on Burgess’ 3-pointer with 10:54 left. Lawrence built the lead to as many as 13 points and Carroll got as close as six points after that.

The Pioneers trimmed the edge to 91-84 with 57 seconds remaining, but Lawrence went 5-for-6 from the foul line in the final minute and got a dunk from Conor Klusendorf to seal the victory.

Klusendorf finished with 11 points and Ryan DePouw, who hit three free throws down the stretch, had 13 points.

Lawrence returns home on Tuesday to face Ripon College at Alexander Gymnasium.

Poor shooting dooms Vikings in loss to Carroll

WAUKESHA, Wis. — The Lawrence University women’s basketball team had a rough afternoon shooting the basketball and dropped a 64-33 Midwest Conference game at Carroll University on Saturday.

Lawrence (1-16, 1-11 MWC) hit on only 22.5 percent (9-40) of its shots from the floor. The Vikings were also hit hard by 42 turnovers.

Amber Lisowe was the only Lawrence player to score in double figures with 10 points. Presley Neuman pulled down a game-high eight rebounds for Lawrence.

Janelle Groer scored 23 points to pace Carroll (7-9, 6-5).

The Pioneers went on a 10-1 run midway through the first half to stretch their lead to 23-10. Carroll led 31-17 at the half. Carroll scored the first seven points of the second half, and Lawrence never threatened after that.

Lawrence returns home to face Ripon College on Tuesday at Alexander Gymnasium.

Vikings shut out Northland in series opener

ASHLAND, Wis. — The Lawrence University hockey team put on an outstanding defensive performance and posted a 3-0 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Northland College Friday night at the Bay Area Civic Center.

Freshman goaltender Peter Emery made 29 saves to earn his second shutout of the season. Lawrence also limited the Lumberjacks to 0-for-7 on the power play.

Lawrence (6-9-3, 5-5-3 MCHA), which piled up a 45-29 edge in shots, got on the board late in the first period. Gustav Lindgren scored off assists from Austin Rohaly and Matt Hughes at the 15:14 mark.

Lawrence made it 2-0 with just 3:09 left in the second period when Phil Bushbacher scored his sixth goal of the season off assists from Brad Scurfield and William Thoren.

Lawrence then made it 3-0 just 2:05 into the third period when Scurfield scored on the power play off an assist from Thoren. The Vikings finished 1-for-3 on the power play.

Ian Perrier stopped 42 shots for Northland (6-9-3, 5-6-2) and took the loss.

The team wrap up the weekend series on Saturday afternoon.

St. Norbert thwarts Vikings comeback

DE PERE, Wis. — The St. Norbert College men’s basketball team built a double-digit lead and then stymied a Lawrence University rally on Wednesday night to post a 74-65 Midwest Conference victory at Schuldes Sports Center.

Brandon Gries paced St. Norbert (11-6, 8-4 MWC) with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. Andrew Schwoerer added 15 points for the Green Knights and Paul Appleton had 13.

Tyler Crisman led Lawrence (5-10, 4-7) with 17 points. Davis DeWolfe picked up a double-double for the Vikings with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Conor Klusendorf added 13 points and eight boards, and Chris Siebert chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds.

St. Norbert saw its 10-point halftime lead shrink to 41-35 after DeWolfe’s 3-pointer with 14:42 left. The Green Knights responded by scoring the game’s next 15 points to push the lead 56-35 with 9:03 remaining.

Lawrence went on a 17-4 run of its own, capped by Crisman’s 3-pointer, to cut the lead to 60-52 with 5:15 remaining. The teams then traded baskets over the next few minutes and Lawrence closed the gap to seven points twice, the last at 67-60 on Crisman’s jumper with 1:10 left.

The Vikings couldn’t get any closer as St. Norbert hit 5 of 8 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Lawrence returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Carroll University.

Green Knights take down Lawrence

DE PERE, Wis. — The St. Norbert College women’s basketball team got off to a fast start and went on to an 89-45 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Wednesday at Schuldes Sports Center.

Krista Pelky led St. Norbert (14-3, 12-0 MWC) with 21 points, and Jamie Kuhl added 20 points. Tasha Giese picked up a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Green Knights.

Chioma Ejimkonye paced the Vikings (1-15, 1-10) with 11 points, and Kassidy Rinehart added 10.

St. Norbert jumped out to a double-digit lead at 19-9 less than eight minutes into the game. The Green Knights increased that lead to 20 points with 6:52 left in the opening half. St. Norbert then went on a 17-3 to finish the half and led 52-21 at the break.

The Green Knights continued to gradually pull away in the second half and led by as many as 49 points in the second half.

Lawrence returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Carroll University.

Big third period helps Raiders down Lawrence

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — The Milwaukee School of Engineering scored early and late in the third period and posted a 4-2 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Lawrence University on Saturday at the Kern Center.

Jordan Keizer’s unassisted goal just 1:06 into the third period broke a 2-2 tie. Bradley Tierney scored with only 1:42 left in the game to seal the victory for the Raiders (12-5-0, 9-3-0 MCHA).

Connor Toomey made 41 saves to earn the win for MSOE. Peter Emery stopped 23 shots for Lawrence (5-9-3, 4-5-3), which had a 43-27 edge in shots.

Lawrence got on the board first on Derek Brickan’s unassisted goal at the 14:37 mark of the opening period. The Raiders tied it on Kevin Medina’s goal early in the second period.

Lawrence grabbed a 2-1 lead on Reijo Wahlin’s first goal of the season at the 16:08 mark of the second period. MSOE tied the game again when Todd Krupa scored a power-play goal at 18:22 of the second.

Second-half surge lifts Pioneers over Lawrence

GRINNELL, Iowa — The Grinnell College men’s basketball team went on a scoring run midway through the second half to pull away and went on to a 98-74 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Saturday at Darby Gymnasium.

Griffin Lentsch paced Grinnell (13-1, 9-1 MWC) with 19 points, and Luke Yaeger added 15.

Chris Siebert poured in a game-high 24 points for Lawrence (5-9, 4-6), and went 10-for-10 from the foul line for a second consecutive game. Siebert also had a game-high seven rebounds and game-high five steals.

Conor Klusendorf added 22 points for the Vikings.

Grinnell pulled out to a 17-point lead in the first half, but the Vikings trimmed that lead to 42-35 courtesy of a 10-0 run. Max Burgess hit a pair of 3-pointers for the Vikings during that stretch.

Grinnell pushed the lead back to 55-42 at the break, but Lawrence whittled the lead to 64-58 after a pair of Siebert free throws at the 14:40 mark.

After a Klusendorf dunk cut Grinnell’s advantage to 73-64, Grinnell went on a decisive 13-2 run to grab an 86-66 lead with 7:39 left. Lawrence never got closer than 18 points after that.

Grinnell tops Vikings

GRINNELL, Iowa — The Grinnell College women’s basketball team pulled away midway through the first half and posted a 62-49 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Saturday at Darby Gymnasium.

Rebecca DeGroot paced Grinnell (8-6, 7-3 MWC) with 17 points. Michelle Briggs had a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds for the Pioneers, and Megan Huey added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Amber Lisowe led Lawrence (1-14, 1-9) with 13 points. Alex Deshler, Chioma Ejimkonye and Cathy Kaye had 10 points apiece. Ejimkonye handed out a game-high seven assists, and Deshler had a team-high seven rebounds.

The Vikings played without leading rebounder Presley Neuman, and the Pioneers took advantage. Grinnell outrebounded the Vikings 49-36 and had three players with double figures in rebounds.

Grinnell led 10-8 when the Pioneers scored 15 consecutive points, capped by DeGroot’s layup with 6:34 left, to take a 25-8 lead. Kaye’s layup stopped the run by Grinnell, but the Pioneers went on to lead 33-18 at the half.

Lawrence got as close as 13 points on two occasions in the second half, and finally trimmed the lead to 11 at the 3:14 mark but got no closer.

Vikings shoot down Knox

GALESBURG, Ill. — The Lawrence University men’s basketball team came out firing on Friday night and rolled to a 92-83 Midwest Conference victory over Knox College.

Chris Siebert paced Lawrence (5-8, 4-5 MWC) and all scorers with 23 points. Davis DeWolfe added 21 points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Vikings. Tyler Crisman had 19 points and handed out a game-high nine assists, and Tyler Mazur chipped in with 11 points.

Tanner Carlson led Knox (3-12, 2-8) with 22 points.

Lawrence hit eight of its first 11 shots from the floor to quickly build 22-7 lead just eight minutes into the contest. The Vikings built that lead to as many as 21 points in the first half. The Vikings capped the first half on Mazur’s 3-pointer to take a 42-22 lead at the half.

Knox cut the lead back to 15 points at 54-39 early in the second half, but Lawrence countered with a 13-4 run. Crisman hit two 3-pointers in that outburst and DeWolfe added five points to give Lawrence a 67-43 lead with 11:21 remaining.

Knox pecked away at the lead and cut it to 84-75 with 1:03 left, but the Vikings hit eight of their next 10 free throws to seal the victory.

Lawrence now travels to Grinnell College for a game on Saturday afternoon.

Prairie Fire tops Lawrence

GALESBURG, Ill. — The Knox College women’s basketball team pulled away late in the first half and went on to a 98-80 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Friday night.

Krystyna Williams posted a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds for Knox (3-12, 3-7 MWC). Abby Owens added 17 points for the Prairie Fire.

Alex Deshler paced Lawrence (1-13, 1-8) with a double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds. Chioma Ejimkonye added 17 points for the Vikings, and Cathy Kaye had 11 points and nine rebounds.

After a pair of Deshler free throws trimmed Knox’s lead to 27-19 with 6:57 left in the opening half, the Prairie Fire pulled away. Knox went on a 32-11 run to finish the first half and led 59-30 at the half.

Lawrence was plagued by 26 turnovers in the first half and finished with 48 for the game.

The Vikings opened the second half by going on a 22-7 run and cut the lead to 66-52 on Deshler’s jumper with 13:36 remaining. Lawrence got as close as 13 points on a jumper by Ejimkonye with 11:16 left, but Knox countered with an 11-2 run to put the game out of reach.

Lawrence travels to Grinnell College for a game on Saturday afternoon.
