MSOE hangs on to edge Lawrence

The 14th-ranked Milwaukee School of Engineering hung on for a 3-2 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Lawrence University on Friday night at the Appleton Family Ice Center.

MSOE (11-5-0, 8-3-0 MCHA) built a 3-1 lead and withstood a third-period charge by the Vikings (5-8-3, 4-4-3).

Connor Toomey stopped 36 shots to pick up the win for MSOE. Peter Emery made 31 saves for the Vikings.

Josh Keizer got the Raiders on the board just nine seconds into the opening period. Lawrence finally tied it on Huck Saunders’ second goal of the season at the 1:43 mark of the second period.

West Bauman gave MSOE a 2-1 edge on his goal at the 9:02 mark of the second. The Raiders made it 3-1 on Bradley Tierney’s power-play goal with just 1:35 remaining in the second period.

Lawrence trimmed the lead to 3-2 on Phil Buschbacher’s goal at the 7:45 mark of the third. Lawrence did pull the goaltender for the final 30 seconds of the contest but could not get the equalizer.

The teams wrap up the series Saturday night in Milwaukee.

Bulldogs edge Lawrence again

ADRIAN, Mich. — The eighth-ranked Adrian College hockey team held on for a 3-2 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Lawrence University on Saturday at Arrington Ice Arena.

The Bulldogs (11-4-0, 9-1-0 MCHA) won by same score in the series opener on Friday.

Lawrence (5-7-3, 4-3-3) grabbed a 1-0 lead at the 12:17 mark of the first period when Derek Brickan scored his third goal of the season off assists by Kevin Killian and Gustav Lindgren.

Adrian tied the score on Zach Graham’s power-play goal at 9:51 of the second. Graham scored again on the power play at 11:22 of the second to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 edge.

Lawrence was a 5-on-3 power play when Jameson Raymond scored for the Vikings with just 57 seconds left in the second period to tie it at 2-2. Brad Scurfield and Phil Bushbacher picked up assists on that goal.

The score remained tied until Killian was whistled for interference at the 8:27 mark of the third period. The Vikings were just 20 seconds away from killing off the penalty when Doug Clifford scored his first goal of the season at the 10:07 mark to put Adrian up 3-2. Adrian, which scored all three goals on the power play, went 3-for-10 on the man-advantage.

Lawrence had its own power-play opportunity when Grant Telfer was called for clipping at 14:01, but the Vikings couldn’t cash in. Lawrence pulled the goaltender in the final minute but couldn’t get the equalizer.

Peter Emery made 32 saves for Lawrence, and Scott Shackell stopped 29 shots for Adrian.

Lawrence returns to action on Jan. 20 when it hosts MSOE.

DeWolfe powers Vikings over Monmouth

Davis DeWolfe posted a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Lawrence University men’s basketball team to a 67-63 Midwest Conference victory over Monmouth College on Saturday at Alexander Gymnasium.

DeWolfe, a sophomore center, stepped out and hit 3 of 4 from 3-point range and finished 6 of 12 from the floor.

Tyler Crisman added 16 points and four assists for Lawrence (4-8, 3-5 MWC), and Conor Klusendorf had an outstanding all-around game with 14 points, five rebounds, three blocks and three steals.

Kenny Foster had a double-double for the Scots (4-9, 2-6) with 25 points and 10 rebounds.

Lawrence led by as many as nine points in the first half but neither team was able to pull away. The lead changed five times, and the score was tied five times.

The Vikings finally got some breathing room when they scored eight consecutive points, with Crisman and Max Burgess both hitting 3-pointers and Crisman adding a layup, for a 53-44 lead with 6:42 left.

Monmouth bounced back and cut the lead to two, the last time on a pair of free throws from Foster, with 2:48 remaining. Crisman countered with a driving layup to put the Vikings up 60-56.

The teams then traded misses before Chris Siebert was fouled with 50 seconds left. He hit a pair of free throws to put the Vikings up 62-56. Foster’s layup with 40 seconds left trimmed the lead back to 62-58, but the Vikings sealed the win from the foul line from that point.

After DeWolfe converted 1 of 2 from the foul line, Siebert hit four consecutive free throws in the final 19 seconds to secure the victory. Siebert, who had a game-high seven assists, went 6-for-6 from the line in the final 50 seconds.

Lawrence returns to action on Jan. 20 when it travels to Knox College.

Jones leads Monmouth past Vikings

Haley Jones was perfect from the floor on her way to a game-high 19 points and led the Monmouth College women’s basketball team to a 94-66 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Saturday at Alexander Gymnasium.

Jones went 7-for-7 from the floor and connected on 5 of 7 free throws to pace Monmouth (7-6, 6-2 MWC). Marla Willard had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Lauren Kellen picked up 10 assists for the Scots.

Amber Lisowe led Lawrence (1-12, 1-7) with 19 points. Chioma Ejimkonye added 15 points and four steals, and Cathy Kaye had 13 points and six rebounds. Presley Neuman tied for game-high honors with 10 rebounds.

Monmouth jumped on the Vikings early and had a double-digit lead at 15-4 just 5:07 into the game. The Scots built that lead to as many as 20 points in the first half, but Lawrence trimmed the margin to 47-31 at the half.

The Scots poured it on early in the second half and went on a 28-6 run to open the half. Monmouth led 75-37 with 12:12 remaining in the contest. The Scots would go on to lead by as many as 45 points.

Lawrence returns to action on Jan. 20 when it travels to Knox College.

Adrian holds off Vikings

ADRIAN, Mich. — The No. 8 Adrian College hockey team hung on for a 3-2 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Lawrence University on Friday night at Arrington Ice Arena.

The Bulldogs pulled out to a 3-0 lead after two periods, but Lawrence scored twice on the power play in the third period. Lawrence pulled its goaltender for the final 44 seconds but could not get the equalizer.

Lawrence (5-6-3, 4-2-3 MCHA) enjoyed a 38-25 advantage in shots. Adrian (10-4-0, 8-1-0) got a goal and an assist from Jordan Principalli.

Adrian grabbed the lead midway through the first period when Kevin Balas scored at the 9:11. The Bulldogds made it 2-0 just 1:01 into the second period when Principalli scored. Adrian, which was 1-for-5 on the man-advantage, got a power-play goal from Shelby Gray at the 10:29 mark of the second to go up 3-0.

Lawrence went on the power play after Grant Telfer was sent off for boarding at the 8:33 mark of the third. Erik Soderlund scored on the power play off assists from Jameson Raymond and Phil Bushbacher at the 10:08 to trim the lead to 3-1.

Adrian’s Zach Wilson took a slashing penalty just over a minute later and Lawrence cashed in again. Matt Hughes scored on the power play with assists from Raymond and William Thoren at the 12:07 mark to make it 3-2.

The Vikings finished 2-for-8 on the power play.

The team skated at even strength for the rest of the game, and Lawrence pulled goaltender Peter Emery with 44 seconds left but couldn’t score again.

Emery finished the game with 22 saves for the Vikings. Scott Shackell recorded 36 saves for the Bulldogs.

The teams wrap up the series on Saturday afternoon.

Grinnell gets past Lawrence

The Grinnell College men’s basketball team pulled away late in the first half and withstood a second-half rally by Lawrence University to post a 103-94 Midwest Conference victory Friday night at Alexander Gymnasium.

Matt Chalupa paced Grinnell (11-0, 7-0 MWC) with 19 points. Griffin Lentsch and Jesse Ney added 15 points apiece for the Pioneers. Lentsch, the nation’s leading scorer, was limited to half of his 30-point average.

Tyler Crisman and Chris Siebert scored 23 points apiece for Lawrence (3-8, 2-5). Siebert also handed out 13 assists, just two shy of tying Lawrence’s school record of 15, which is held by current head coach Joel DePagter.

Conor Klusendorf added 20 points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Vikings. Klusendorf, who leads the MWC in blocked shots, picked up three blocks on the evening. Andrew Kline chipped in with a career-high 10 points for the Vikings.

Grinnell pulled away in the final six minutes of the first half. Three consecutive points by Davis DeWolfe trimmed Grinnell’s lead to 33-32, but the Pioneers went on a 30-13 run over the the final 6:37 of the half. Grinnell led 63-45 at the half.

Lawrence came out strong in the second half and outscored the Pioneers 12-4 to start the half. Siebert and Kline scored four points apiece in the run that cut Grinnell’s lead to 67-57 with 16:00 left.

Grinnell then got 3-pointers from Evan Johnson, Patrick Maher, Xander Strek and Chalupa to build the lead back to 79-61. Lawrence didn’t cut the lead back to 10 points until the final minute and didn’t get closer than nine points.

The Vikings return to action on Saturday when they host Monmouth College.

Cold shooting night dooms Vikings

The Lawrence University women’s basketball team had a frigid shooting night, and Grinnell College pulled away early and went on to a 62-35 Midwest Conference victory at Alexander Gymnasium on Friday night.

Lawrence hit only 17.5 percent (10-57) shots from the floor, including 5.3 percent (1-19) from beyond the 3-point line.

Grinnell jumped out to a double-digit lead just over seven minutes into the contest. The Pioneers led by as many as 32 points in the first half and were up 44-14 at the break.

Megan Huey paced Grinnell (6-5, 5-2 MWC) with 12 points and Kelly Clarke added 10. Michelle Briggs paced the Pioneers with 13 rebounds, and she added three blocks.

Alex Deshler had a double-double for Lawrence (1-11, 1-6) with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Presley Neuman was also in double digits with 10 rebounds.

Lawrence returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Monmouth College.

Pioneers shoot past Lawrence

The Carroll University men’s basketball team used a combination of solid inside play and good outside shooting to beat Lawrence University 91-63 in a Midwest Conference game on Tuesday at Alexander Gymnasium.

Forward Alec Molter posted a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds to pace Carroll (7-4, 3-3 MWC). Guards Kyle Jones and Kevin Hurd scored 21 and 18 points, respectively, and the pair combined to go 8-for-12 on 3-pointers.

Tyler Mazur and Tyler Crisman scored nine points apiece to lead Lawrence (3-7, 2-4).

Carroll came out on fire and hit 11 of its first 13 shots from the floor to build a commanding 28-10 lead with 11:30 left in the first half. Lawrence battled back with a smaller lineup and some hot shooting of its own.

The Vikings went on a 23-8 run to cut the lead to 36-33 with 3:48 left in the first half. Lawrence hit 7 of 11 shots from the floor during that stretch, and Mazur scored all nine of his points in that run.

Carroll recovered and got a big 3-pointer from Hurd with 18 seconds left in the first half to give the Pioneers a 44-35 lead at the break.

The Pioneers started the second half a lot like the first and hit eight of their first 14 shots to build a 65-44 lead with 13:16 remaining. Carroll would go on to lead by as many as 31 points.

Lawrence returns to action on Friday when it hosts Grinnell College.

Pioneers pull away from Lawrence

The Carroll University women’s basketball team broke open a close game early in the second half and went on to a 56-44 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Tuesday at Alexander Gymnasium.

Janelle Groer led Carroll (3-8, 2-4 MWC) with 14 points, and Kelly Menden added 12. Breann Maryanski pulled down 11 rebounds for the Pioneers.

Chioma Ejimkonye paced Lawrence (1-10, 1-5) and all scorers with 19 points. Presley Neuman tied for game-high honors with 11 rebounds for the Vikings.

The game was tight throughout the first half, and Carroll went on a brief 8-1 scoring run to grab a 29-21 lead with 1:41 left in the opening 20 minutes. Lawrence trimmed that margin to 29-23 at the break.

Carroll then opened the second half by scoring the first eight points of the second half, including four by Menden, to take a 37-23 lead. Ejimkonye countered for Lawrence with a layup and a three-point play to trim the lead to 37-28 with 14:16 left.

Carroll responded by outscoring the Vikings 8-2 over the next five minutes to grab a 47-30 edge. Lawrence never got closer than the final margin the rest of the way.

The Vikings return to action on Friday when they host Grinnell College.

Bucs pull away early in win over Lawrence

BELOIT, Wis. — The Beloit College men’s basketball team pulled away midway through the first half, and Lawrence University never seriously threatened in the Bucs’ 86-64 Midwest Conference victory on Saturday at Flood Arena.

Tyler Butke and David Bremner scored 21 points apiece to lead Beloit (3-7, 2-4 MWC).

Chris Siebert scored a game-high 22 points to pace Lawrence (3-6, 2-3). Tyler Crisman and Davis DeWolfe added 13 points apiece and Max Burgess had 11 for the Vikings.

Beloit led 13-12 when the Bucs went on a 12-0 run to grab a 25-12 lead with 8:54 left in the opening half. Michael Horton, who finished with 18 points, capped the first half by hitting a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Beloit a 49-30 lead at the break.

Led by Siebert, Lawrence came out strong to start the second half. Siebert scored 10 points in a 12-3 scoring outburst to begin the half, and that trimmed Beloit’s lead to 52-42 with 17:41 remaining.

Beloit built the lead back to as many as 14 points, but Lawrence did manage to trim it back to 63-53 with 9:09 left. That was as close as Lawrence could get as Beloit responded with a 7-0 run to seal the victory.

Lawrence returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Carroll University.
