Beloit rallies to top Vikings

BELOIT, Wis. — The Beloit College women’s basketball team rallied from down double digits in the first half to post a 71-64 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Saturday at Flood Arena.

Kandace Fox scored 18 points and Lauren McNanna added 14 to lead Beloit (4-7, 1-5 MWC).

Chioma Ejimkonye led Lawrence (1-9, 1-4) with 17 points, and Kassidy Rinehart added 13. Alex Deshler chipped in with 11 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds for the Vikings.

Lawrence jumped out to an early lead, and the Vikings went on a 6-0 run, capped by four consecutive points from Bethany Hoster, to lead 15-5 with 13:31 left in the first half.

The Vikings built that lead to as many as 13 points and led 26-16 after a pair of Deshler free throws with 5:43 left in the opening half. Beloit then hit its next five shots from the floor and closed out the half on an 18-3 run to grab a 34-29 lead at the half.

Lawrence trimmed Beloit’s lead to 44-43 after Amber Lisowe’s three-point play with 13:49 left in the contest. Beloit then scored the game’s next nine points to retake control.

Beloit built its lead to as many as 13 points, and the Vikings trimmed the lead to six on two occasions but could get no closer.

Lawrence returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Carroll University.

Vikings shoot down Auggies with overtime shutout

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Matt Hughes’ overtime goal lifted the Lawrence University hockey team to a 1-0 nonconference victory over Augsburg College on Saturday at Ed Saugestad Rink.

Hughes’ goal, his team-high ninth of the season, came 2:40 into the five-minute overtime off assists from Brad Scurfield and Erik Soderlund.

Lawrence (5-5-3) had been on the power play in the overtime period when Augsburg’s Ben McClellan got sent off for slashing at 1:48. The man-advantage lasted only 13 seconds when Paul Zuke was whistled for interference.

The Vikings kept up the pressure with a shot by Hughes blocked by a defenseman and a Soderlund saved by the goaltender. Hughes then regained control of the puck and beat Justin Lochner for the only goal of the game.

Lawrence freshman goaltender Peter Emery picked up the first shutout of his career by making 40 saves. Lochner stopped 30 shots for Augsburg (4-7-0).

This was Lawrence fourth overtime game of the season with the previous three all ending in ties. This was Lawrence’s first win in an overtime game since a 4-3 win over Finlandia University on Jan. 16, 2010. Lawrence is 2-1-5 in the eight overtime games dating back to the win over Finlandia.

Lawrence returns to action next weekend when it travels to the 2011 NCAA runner-up, Adrian College.

Scoring burst pushes Auggies past Lawrence

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Augsburg College hockey team scored four consecutive goals to pull away and post a 9-4 nonconference victory over Lawrence University on Friday night at Ed Saugestad Rink.

Lawrence (4-5-3) trailed only 4-3 midway through the second period when Augsburg (4-6-0) scored twice before the end of the second period and two more times in the first 6:35 of the third to pull away.

The Vikings cut the lead to 4-3 on Brad Scurfield’s goal at 9:53 of the second. John Lennartson countered for Augsburg at 11:29, and Thomas Paine scored at 18:41 to stake the Auggies to a 6-3 lead after two periods.

Paine scored again just 2:07 into the third period, and Lennartson added a power-play goal at 6:35 to give Augsburg an 8-3 edge.

Lennartson finished the night with four goals, and Paine had a pair.

Ben DiMarco scored at 9:36 to cut the lead to 8-4, but Augsburg got its second goal of the night from Trevor Doden to complete the scoring.

John Bretzman made 32 saves and got the win for Augsburg. Freshman Adam Eno played the first 46:35 and took the loss. He made 29 saves and allowed eight goals.

Lawrence and Augsburg wrap up the series on Saturday afternoon.

Southeastern shoots past Lawrence

LAKELAND, Fla. — The No. 15 Southeastern University men’s basketball enjoyed a hot shooting night en route to a 95-65 nonconference win over Lawrence University on Monday.

Southeastern (10-5), a NAIA school, shot 53.3 percent from the floor, including 57.9 percent (11-19) on 3-pointers. The Fire also went 20-for-23 from the foul line.

Jacob Hodges came off the bench to pace Southeastern with 24 points.

Davis DeWolfe paced Lawrence (3-5) with 17 points, and Tyler Crisman added 15.

Lawrence was hot early as the Vikings hit their first nine shots from the floor. Lawrence built a 22-10 lead just five minutes into the game. The Fire bounced back by scoring the game’s next 10 points to trim the lead to 22-20.

Chris Carlyle’s 3-pointer gave Southeastern its first lead of the game at 39-36 with 1:32 left in the first half. The Fire outscored Lawrence 10-1 to end the half and led 49-37 at the break.

Southeastern continued to pull away in the second half. The Fire went on a 26-12 run over the first 12 minutes of the second half to lead 75-49.

Lawrence takes a break for the holidays and doesn’t return to action until it travels to Beloit College on Jan. 7.

Big second half leads seventh-ranked Pointers past Lawrence

STEVENS POINT, Wis. — The No. 7 UW-Stevens Point women’s basketball team used a big second half to record a 74-38 nonconference victory over Lawrence University on Saturday night at Berg Gymnasium.

Cassie Bandow paced the Pointers (10-0) with 15 points and Brittni Buechel added 10.

Amber Lisowe led Lawrence (1-8) with 15 points and she grabbed five rebounds. Alex Deshler and Presley Neuman both added six points and tied for game-high honors with seven rebounds.

The Pointers led by as many as nine points in the first half before the Vikings rallied. Stevens Point led 16-7 before the Vikings went on a 12-3 run and tied the game at 19-19 on Deshler’s layup with 5:11 left in the first half. Lisowe scored eight points during that run.

Stevens Point regained the lead on Bandow’s layup and led 26-21 at the half.

The Pointers took command of the game in the early portion of the second half. Stevens Point went on a 14-0 run to take a 48-27 lead with just under 12 minutes remaining.

Lawrence never got closer than 16 points the rest of the way.

Crisman leads charge as Vikings stop Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ill. — Tyler Crisman poured in 29 points to lead the Lawrence University men’s basketball team to an 87-74 Midwest Conference victory at Glennie Gymnasium on Friday night.

 Crisman was 10-for-14 from the floor, including 7-for-10 from 3-point range. The 29 points was a season high for Crisman and one point shy of his career high of 30, set at Beloit College on Feb. 12, 2011.

Chris Siebert added 19 points and a game-high five assists for the Vikings (3-4, 2-2 MWC). Conor Klusendorf chipped in with 15 points, and Davis DeWolfe had 10. Both Klusendorf and DeWolfe tied for game-high honors with six rebounds.

Kenny Foster paced Monmouth (1-5, 1-3) with 26 points.

Lawrence led by as many as nine points early in the first half, but Monmouth came back to take a 36-32 lead at the break. Lawrence regained the lead in the first 30 seconds of the second half courtesy of a Siebert 3-pointer and a Klusendorf dunk.

The Vikings slowly built their lead to as many as 12 points before the Scots rallied. Monmouth chipped away at the lead and cut it to 71-70 with 3:03 left.

Siebert answered with a jumper for the Vikings, and Klusendorf followed with a steal and dunk to give the Vikings 75-70 lead. After a miss by the Scots, Klusendorf got a layup to put Lawrence up 77-70 with 1:29 left.

Foster hit a jumper with 1:22 left to cut the lead back to 77-72, and Lawrence turned the ball on its next possession. That’s when the wheels fell off for Monmouth. The Scots were whistled for an offensive foul, and Foster picked up a technical foul.

Lawrence hit six consecutive free throws before Monmouth ever got the ball back to lead 83-72 and seal the victory.

Lawrence returns to action Monday when it travels to Florida to face Southeastern University.

Monmouth tops Vikings

MONMOUTH, Ill. — Four Monmouth College women’s basketball players scored in double figures as the Scots beat Lawrence University 97-31 in a Midwest Conference game on Friday night at Glennie Gymnasium.

Haley Jones paced the Scots (4-3, 3-1 MWC) with 13 points. Colleen Forrest added 12 points, Kathleen Forrest had 11 and Kaley Corban had 10. Fourteen players scored for Monmouth.

Amber Lisowe led Lawrence (1-7, 1-3) with 10 points. Alex Deshler pulled down a game-high nine rebounds for the Vikings.

Lawrence had an absolutely frigid shooting night. The Vikings were only 9-for-53 (17 percent) from the floor. Lawrence went 0-for-22 from beyond the 3-point line. Cathy Kaye was the only Lawrence player that had a solid night shooting the ball. Kaye finished with eight points of 4 of 8 shooting.

Prairie Fire hangs on to down Lawrence

The Knox College men’s basketball team rallied in the second half and then held off Lawrence University for a 71-68 Midwest Conference victory on Tuesday night at Alexander Gymnasium.

Tanner Carlson scored 21 poins and Joe Kozak added 20 points and a game-high nine rebounds for Knox (1-5, 1-4 MWC). Ryan DePouw came off the bench to pace Lawrence (2-4, 1-2) with 17 points. Davis DeWolfe added 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Vikings.

Cold shooting from long range doomed the Vikings. Lawrence, which entered the game leading the Midwest Conference in 3-point shooting, was 11 of 38 from beyond the arc. Lawrence also went only 5-for-12 from the foul line. Knox enjoyed a huge advantage at the line by going 20-for-26 on free throws.

Knox was down by as many as seven points early in the second half before the Prairie Fire rallied. Knox went on a 12-1 run to grab a 50-46 lead with 12:28 left.

Knox maintained its edge and led 69-60 with 29 seconds left. Conor Klusendorf hit a 3-pointer for Lawrence, and an offensive foul gave the ball back to the Vikings. DePouw then drained a 3-pointer with 13 seconds left to trim the margin to 69-66.

Kozak was fouled and made one free throw with 11 seconds left to put Knox up 70-66. After a Tyler Crisman layup cut the lead back to 70-68, Kozak was fouled again with four seconds left. He made one free throw for a 71-68 lead, but Crisman’s desperation 3-pointer was off the mark at the buzzer.

Lawrence returns to action on Friday when the Vikings travel to Monmouth College.

Vikings earn first victory of season by downing Knox

The Lawrence University women’s basketball team picked up its first victory of the season with a stirring 81-77 Midwest Conference win over Knox College on Tuesday night at Alexander Gymnasium.

The victory snapped a 31-game winless streak for the Vikings. It was Lawrence’s first victory since an 88-68 victory at Silver Lake College on Feb. 15, 2010. It also marked Lawrence’s first Midwest Conference victory since a 62-53 victory over Knox on Jan. 19, 2008. Lawrence had gone 62 league games without a victory.

Lawrence (1-6, 1-2 MWC) got a double-double from guard Alex Deshler with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman guard Chioma Ejimkonye paced the Vikings with 20 points and added eight rebounds. Cathy Kaye chipped in with 16 points and seven rebounds.

Kelly Ricketts paced Knox (1-7, 1-4) with 14 points and six rebounds. Krystyna Williams added 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds for the Prairie Fire.

Knox rallied in the second half and had its biggest lead of the game at 66-61 with 5:24 remaining. The Vikings battled back and took a 75-74 lead on a pair of Deshler free throws with 1:47 remaining.

Knox missed a pair of shots, and Deshler grabbed the rebound for the Vikings. Amber Lisowe then buried a 3-pointer from the left wing with 55 seconds left to give Lawrence a 78-74 lead.

After a pair of missed 3-pointers by Knox, an offensive foul gave Lawrence the ball back with 29 seconds left. Lisowe was fouled with 29 seconds left and made one free throw to give the Vikings a 79-74 lead.

Knox trimmed the lead to 79-77 when Ricketts hit a 3-pointer with 20 seconds remaining. Knox then committed an intentional foul, and Deshler made one free throw with 11 seconds left to put Lawrence up 80-77. Knox then fouled Ejimkonye with nine seconds left and she made one free throw to seal the victory.

Playing against Knox’s pressing, uptempo style, Lawrence shot 47.1 percent from the floor in the first half. The Vikings went 6-for-7 on 3-pointers in the first half to build a 42-27 lead at the break.

Knox opened the second half on a 12-3 run to trim the lead to 45-39 with 14:53 remaining. After Kaye hit a 3-pointer to give Lawrence a 52-45 lead, Knox scored the game’s next seven points to tie the game at 52-52 with 10:20 left. Knox built its lead to as many as five points before Lawrence rallied for the victory.

Lawrence hits the road to face Monmouth College on Friday.

Gusties hold on to down Lawrence

The Gustavus Adolphus College hockey team held off a late charge by Lawrence University on Saturday and hung on for a 5-3 nonconference victory over the Vikings at the Appleton Family Ice Center.

Adam Smyth scored four times, including a natural hat trick, to pace Gustavus Adolphus (6-4-2). Lawrence (4-4-3) scored twice in the third period to trim the Gustavus lead to 4-3, but the Gusties got an empty-net goal in the final minutes to seal the win.

Gustavus took the lead just 1:31 into the game, and Lawrence finally tied it at 1-1 on Phil Bushbacher’s goal at the 6:11 mark of the second period.

Smyth then started his scoring barrage with a power-play goal at the 12:46 mark of the second. He made it 3-1 when he scored 59 seconds later. Smyth got the hat trick with another power-play goal at the 15:47 mark to give the Gusties a 4-1 edge.

Bushbacher picked up his second goal of the night when he scored at the 8:04 mark of the third period to cut the lead to 4-2. Patrick Coyne, who had two assists on the afternoon, then scored off a pass from Bushbacher at the 15:43 mark to trim the margin to 4-3.

Lawrence pulled goaltender Peter Emery with 2:00  left, but Smyth picked up an empty-net goal 21 seconds later to seal the victory.

Emery made 24 saves and took the loss. John McLean stopped 28 shots for the Gusties to pick up the win.
