Beloit rallies to down Vikings

BELOIT, Wis. — The Beloit College volleyball team rallied from two sets down to defeat Lawrence University 3-2 on Friday night in a Midwest Conference match at Flood Arena.

The Bucs won 19-25, 21-25, 25-22, 25-16, 15-11.

Lawrence scored the final four points of the second set to go up 2-0, but it was Beloit that pulled away late in the third set. Beloit scored three consecutive points to take a 23-20 lead and go on to win that set.

The Bucs rolled in the fourth set and took a 6-1 lead in the final set. Lawrence rallied to trim the lead to two points three different times, including the last at 13-11. Beloit then scored the final two points to win the match.

Leah Kruckman had 16 kills to pace Beloit. Clare Bohrer had 14 kills to lead Lawrence but she also had 17 errors. Emma Kane added 12 kills and Shannon McLain had 11.

Vikings, Foresters battle to overtime tie

The Lawrence University men’s soccer team battled to a 1-1 double-overtime tie with Lake Forest College on Sunday in a Midwest Conference match at Whiting Field West.

Lawrence, which needs a win at Illinois College next Saturday to ensure a berth in the Midwest Conference Tournament, got on the board first on a beautiful play. Vince Butitta scored when Oliver Newsom played a ball just past a Lake Forest defender. Butitta blasted the ball past Lake Forest goalkeeper Ian Taylor and the Vikings led 1-0 at 62:57.

Lake Forest continued to press the attack and got the equalizer on a goal from Alexi Spiratos at 82:13.

That’s the way it would stay as both teams had good scoring chances in the overtime but could not convert.

Steve Solomon made eight saves for the Vikings, and defender Matt Horn cleared a ball off the goal line to stop another Lake Forest scoring chance. Taylor made seven saves for the Foresters.

Koula scores twice as Vikings shut out Lake Forest

Mallory Koula scored twice as the Lawrence University women’s soccer team posted a 2-0 Midwest Conference victory over Lake Forest College on Sunday at Whiting Field West.

The Vikings improved to 4-3-1 in Midwest Conference play and kept alive their hopes for a berth in the four-team league tournament. Lawrence won the 2010 MWC Tournament.

Koula gave the Vikings the lead early when she scored at 7:53. Keli Muchowski played the ball ahead to Jennifer Angeli, who fed Koula. Koula beat goalkeeper Bri Schleibinger for her 17th goal of the season.

Koula made it 3-0 at 32:07 when she took a pass from Muchowski and scored again. The goal gave Koula 137 points for her career, which broke the Lawrence record. Megan Tiemann, who played from 1998-2001, held the record at 135.

Cassie Burke made four saves to pick up the victory.

Exarhos scores twice as Vikings douse Prairie Fire

Stephen Exarhos scored his first two goals of the season to lead the Lawrence University men’s soccer team to a 4-1 Midwest Conference victory over Knox College on Saturday at Whiting Field West.

Exarhos, who had missed a number of games due to injury, scored in the seventh and 14th minutes to help Lawrence extend its win streak to three matches.

Exarhos gave the Vikings a 1-0 lead when he took a pass from Kelson Warner and beat Knox goalkeeper Franz Huebner at 6:40. Lawrence quickly extended its lead to 2-0 when Charlie Mann scored off a pass from David Caprile at 10:20.

Exarhos made it 3-0 when he took a pass from Vince Butitta and scored at 13:07.

Knox cut the lead to 3-1 in the 52nd minute, but Nick Craker countered for the Vikings with his first collegiate goal in the 64th minute.

Taiju Oki made three saves to pick up the win for the Vikings.

Koula’s hat trick powers Lawrence past Knox

Mallory Koula recorded a natural hat trick to lead the Lawrence University women’s soccer team to a 5-3 Midwest Conference victory over Knox College on Saturday at Whiting Field West.

Koula scored three times in the first half to help stake Lawrence to a 4-1 lead at the break. Koula, a senior forward, now has 16 goals on the season.

Lawrence got on the board in the sixth minute when Jennifer Angeli settled a cross that got past Knox goalkeeper Emily Turner and put it in the back of the net.

Koula then got her first goal at the 23:56 mark off passes from Angeli and Natalie Wolf. After a quick goal from Knox, Koula countered with two goals in a span of less than three minutes late in the first half.

Koula scored at the 40:08 mark and then scored again at 42:39 after a short goal kick to give Lawrence a commanding lead at the break.

Sarah Tiano scored her first collegiate goal just 37 seconds into the second half to give Lawrence a 5-1 lead. The Prairie Fire added a pair of late goals to narrow the margin.

Cassie Burke made only one save in 75-plus minutes 0f action to earn the win for Lawrence.

Falcons top Lawrence in three sets

ELMHURST, Ill. — The UW-River Falls volleyball team posted a 3-0 victory over Lawrence University on Saturday at the Elmhurst College Invitational.

River Falls won by the scores of 25-19, 25-13, 25-14.

Clare Bohrer led Lawrence with six kills, and Shannon McLain added four. Taylor Tomaszewski paced the Vikings with 12 digs and two aces. Kate Rosenbalm led Lawrence with 12 assists.

North Central takes down Vikings

ELMHURST, Ill. — The North Central (Ill.) College volleyball team posted a 3-0 victory over Lawrence University on Saturday at the Elmhurst College Invitational.

North Central won 25-16, 25-16, 25-14.

Clare Bohrer paced the Vikings with six kills, and Shannon McLain and Emma Kane had three kills apiece. Kate Rosenbalm led Lawrence with 13 assists. Kathleen Rowland had a team-high 14 digs for Lawrence, and Kane picked up three aces.

Simpson edges Vikings in five sets, Bohrer tops 1,000 kills

ELMHURST, Ill. — The Simpson College volleyball team edged Lawrence University in five sets on Friday at the Elmhurst College Invitational.

Simpson defeated the Vikings 25-15, 24-26, 28-26, 25-21, 15-7.

Lawrence’s Clare Bohrer topped 1,000 kills for her career in the match. Bohrer paced the Vikings with 21 kills and added six blocks. Bohrer now has 1,020 career kills and is just the fifth player in Lawrence history to top 1,000 kills.

Emma Kane added 12 kills for the Vikings, and Kate Rosenbalm piled up 45 assists. Kathleen Rowland had 26 digs and three aces, and Kane and Taylor Tomaszewski added 17 digs apiece.

Wheaton downs Lawrence

ELMHURST, Ill. — The Wheaton College volleyball team put on a strong performance and defeated Lawrence University 3-0 at the Elmhurst College Invitational on Friday night.

The Thunder defeated Lawrence 25-14, 25-20, 25-15.

Clare Bohrer led the Vikings with eight kills. Kate Rosenbalm paced the Lawrence attack with 23 assists, and Kathleen Rowland picked up 24 digs.

Vikings can’t slow Lake Forest offense

The Lake Forest College football team rolled up more than 600 yards of offense and posted a 56-38 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Saturday in the Banta Bowl.

Lake Forest quarterback Pete Scaffidi completed 17 of 29 passes for 367 yards and five touchdowns. Scaffidi also ran for another score. Running back Al Mitchell ran 27 times for 127 yards to pace the Foresters (2-5, 2-5 MWC) ground game, which accounted for 239 yards. The Foresters finished with 610 yards of offense.

Wide receiver Tyler Mazur caught seven passes for 63 yards and two touchdowns for Lawrence (1-7, 1-6). Mazur also ran five times for 31 yards and two touchdowns.

Lawrence quarterback Luke Barthelmess was 19 of 26 for 215 yards and three touchdowns. Barthelmess now has 2,293 yards passing on the season and broke the Lawrence season record of 2,124 yards set by All-American Bill McNamara back in 1986.

Lawrence simply couldn’t slow down the Lake Forest attack, which scored touchdowns on eight of its first 10 possessions. The Foresters scored touchdowns on four of their six first-half possessions and led 28-17 at the half.

Lawrence hung close in the first half as Mazur ran five yards for the Vikings’ first touchdown, and Barthlemess hit Dominque Dirden on an 18-yard touchdown to trim the lead to 21-14. Lawrence completed the scoring in the first half when Cody Robel boomed  a career-long 40-yard field goal as time expired to cut the lead to 28-17.

The Foresters used a fake punt to keep a drive alive to start the third quarter and then finished the drive on Scaffidi’s 18-yard touchdown pass to Rocky Al-Mutawa for a 35-17 lead.

Lawrence countered immediately when Shawn Martin returned the ensuing kickoff 37 yards to the Lake Forest 39. Mazur ran it in from seven yards out six plays later to cut the lead to 35-24.

Lawrence attempted an on-sides kick, and the Martin recovered for the Vikings after a scramble at their own 35. The officials ruled the Vikings touched the ball before it went 10 yards and Lake Forest took over. The Foresters scored five plays later to go up 42-24.

After an interception thrown by backup quarterback Sam Kossow, Lake Forest scored four plays later to lead 49-24. The Foresters added another touchdown early in the fourth quarter to go up 56-24. Barthelmess came back into the game and threw two more touchdown passes, both to Mazur, against Lake Forest’s first-string defense to trim the lead to 56-38.

Lawrence goes on the road and faces Beloit College next Saturday.
