Survey Results # 14 The most important item!

The age old question we used to ask each other was, “If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you have with you?” Since we’re certain Lawrence will be no island (though it has been described as a “bubble”) we minimized the question to, “what is one item you would say is the most important thing to bring to campus?”

Your questions varied, and some of you decided your “thing” didn’t have to be tangible. The number one item that you felt you had to bring–a laptop.

Here are a few other items you and your classmates cannot move to college without!

My cell phone

A desire to succeed

Subscription to a news magazine

My violin

A toothbrush

Burt’s Bees Pomegranate Chapstick

Enthusiasm

Electric Tea Kettle – I’m obsessed!

A notebook

Diversity

Ipod

My Apples to Apples Party Crate – it comes in a wooden crate.

A winter jacket so I don’t freeze!

A beanbag chair – I will sacrifice my bed if I have to. I’m getting a beanbag chair if it kills me.

Survey Results #12: National Wanderers

Lawrence University has students from nearly all fifty states. We thought it would be interesting to ask you which states you are most excited to meet other students from. While a good number of students said “anywhere from the east coast” and slightly more said “any southern state”, we did see some interesting results.

While we didn’t ask why you picked the state you did, here are the states you most want to meet people from:

1 – California

2 – New York (several people referenced an accent)

3 – Alaska (two people specifically referenced asking about Sarah Palin)

4 – Wisconsin and Texas (tied)

5 – Hawaii

So, those of you hailing from the above-mentioned states…you’ll be very popular when you get to campus in two months!

Make a point to stop by the admissions office once you’re on campus to see the “pin-map,” where we have a pin signifying the hometown of every Lawrence student. The fact that you are attending a campus with such strong geographic diversity, along with one of the most internationally diverse campuses is something you can all be proud of!

Survey Results #11: Who’s playing my song?

You probably know that Lawrence University has a pretty amazing music conservatory on campus. But, since you don’t have to be a music major to enjoy music, we decided to ask the big music question: What is your favorite song right now? (True to form, our students’ answers are all over the place.)

I’m Not Alone – Calvin Harris

Gives You Hell – All American Rejects

Halo – Beyonce

Everything Must Go – Steely Dan

You Don’t Know Me – Ben Folds

Zombie – Cranberries

God Laughs – Delta

Love Story – Taylor Swift

Boondocks – Little Big Town

Wait – from Sweeney Todd

“Anything off of the new Green Day cd, or any Go Betty Go song.”

Two Weeks – Grizzly Bear

This Side – Nickel Creek

I’m Yours – Jason Mraz

Here I Am – Queen

Float on By – Modest Mouse

Baba O’Riley – The Who

Boy in the Bubble – Paul Simon

Fearless – Taylor Swift

Waiting – Rob Scallon (my friend!)

Survey Results #9: Twitter Is Forgettable?

Despite what you hear in the media, Lawrence University’s Class of 2013 has responded loud and clear that twitter and myspace are not their preferred social networking sites. We asked incoming Lawrentians which of the three sites they would pick if we could only keep one: Twitter, Facebook or MySpace. The option of “none, thanks” actually beat Twitter and MySpace…

Combined…

Times five.

Facebook is by far the most preferred site of the three.

1 – Facebook, 83.0% (151 individual votes!)

2 – None, Thanks, 14.3% (26 individual votes)

3 – MySpace, 2.2% (just four votes)

4 – Twitter, 0.5% (one solitaire vote!)

We will pass this information along to a campus department all of you will likely rely on: Information Technology Services. Although most of the information on their page relates to your life after you arrive on campus, it’s worth knowing that they are there, and how they will be able to help you. When you get some time away from Facebook, check it out.

Now, we’ll go tell ITS to plan some extra bandwidth for Facebook!

Survey Results #6: The Greatest Question of All…

Critical thinking is an integral part of the Lawrence education experience. Each question seems to lead to a new question. (Like, “What are we having for lunch today?” leads to, “What will we have for dessert?” and, “What about dinner?”) So we decided to ask you what you feel, right now, is the greatest unanswered question.

Your responses were full of thought, intelligence and humor. Enjoy a few of them below:

What happens next?

Why?

Chocolate or vanilla?

What is the long time purpose of anything?

Which came first–the chicken or the egg?

How and why does Oxyclean work?

Why do we fall in love?

What is fulfillment?

Can music save the world?

Why are you eating that?

Not asked yet…

What does everyone see in Will Ferrell? I just don’t get it. What a fool.

Why do we repeat our mistakes? (personal or historical and even the big ones)

How many licks does it really take to get to the center of a tootsie pop?

To what extent are we all connected to each other?

Does any kind of higher power or being really exist?
