Sunset reflection

Another great shot from the gallery of Rachel Crowl, Lawrence’s gifted photographer,

catching the sunset reflecting off the windows of the Warch Campus Center through the branches of a much-loved tree on campus. (Note: there’s way less snow on the ground now than when this photo was taken.)

This Is Lawrence: London Centre

Our top-notch video team just released this one today.

For four decades the London Centre has been Lawrence’s most popular off-campus study destination and has provided life-changing experiences for students and visiting faculty alike. You’ll almost feel like you’re there.

Just when we thought it would never happen in our admissions office…

…it does.

We occasionally read stories of other colleges inadvertently sending letters of admission to students who had, in fact, been denied admission. College admissions folks like us feel the sympathetic shiver down our spines that accompanies these extremely awkward, even painful moments, and, wiping our collective brow, whisper to ourselves, “Thank goodness we haven’t done something like that.”

And then we do.

We did not inadvertently send letters of admission to students who had, in fact, been denied admission—our official decision letters go through the kind of intense pre-flight scrutiny that accompanies rocket launches. (In other words, if you have received an admission decision letter from us, rest assured that your letter is correct.)

However, we did send a “congratulations on your admission to Lawrence” letter on behalf of one of our alumni to a small handful of students who had, on the contrary, not been offered admission to Lawrence University. We are embarrassed by it, and are reaching out to those students to clear up the confusion.

Now our admissions colleagues at other colleges get to feel that sympathetic shiver down their spines, and whisper to themselves, “Thank goodness we haven’t done that.”

May it ever be so.

This is Lawrence – IRS Data Retrieval

The IRS Data Retrieval

Applying for financial aid can be a daunting, challenging, and intimidating process. That’s why the U.S. Department of Education has made it even more confusing… er… easier… well, kinda. If someone you love has a FAFSA that was selected for “verification,” they’ll have to do some more work to show that their information reported on the FAFSA is correct (verification is the U.S. Department of Education’s version of IHRTLUHC). Students and parents can request a tax return transcript (transcript, not a copy of IRS Form 1040) and support the USPS, or they can use the speedy and (hopefully) easy IRS Data Retrieval.

More information about the process and a nice YouTube video help explain the process online at www.lawrence.edu/dept/finaid/forms/verification/#Step1.

About those scholarship amounts…

If you have been a close reader of our website, you may be familiar with our array of academic scholarships and their amounts. Furthermore, if you have received one of those scholarships from us, you may have noticed that the dollar amounts have changed… for the better.

Don’t worry. It’s not a test. The amount is correct. We just haven’t changed the website yet.

If you have not received a scholarship from Lawrence, you may be disappointed, but please do not despair. Lawrence devotes much more of its institutional gift aid toward need-based financial aid. To that end, we strongly encourage you to file for financial aid, so we can explore using more tools to make a Lawrence education more accessible.

And when it comes to filing for financial aid and applying for outside scholarships, we encourage everyone to adopt the Wayne Gretzky philosophy: “You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take.”
