Baseball alumni game time changed

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University baseball Alumni Game has been moved to a 10:30 a.m. start on Saturday at Whiting Field.

The Alumni Game is part of a day of Fall Festival activities on the Lawrence campus. Two other alumni games will played as well on Saturday. The volleyball team has its Alumni Game at 9 a.m., and the softball team takes the field for its game at 11 a.m.

The Lawrence volleyball team opens the varsity competition on Saturday with a 1 p.m. Midwest Conference match with Ripon College. Football kicks off the Hall of Fame Game at 5 p.m. vs. St. Norbert College on Ron Roberts Field at the Banta Bowl.

Green Knights shut out Lawrence

DE PERE, Wis. — The St. Norbert College women’s soccer team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back en route to a 5-0 Midwest Conference win over Lawrence University at Schneider Stadium.

Ellie Lochner scored two goals in the first two minutes to get St. Norbert (7-4-1, 3-1-1 MWC) off to a fast start. The Green Knights led 4-0 at the half and added a second-half goal to complete the scoring.

Two St. Norbert goalkeepers combined to make five saves for the shutout.

Football preview: Lawrence vs. St. Norbert

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University football team takes on St. Norbert College this Saturday in the annual Hall of Fame Game on Ron Roberts Field at the Banta Bowl. The football game caps the weekend of Fall Festival athletic activities with a 5 p.m. kickoff.

Lawrence is coming off a 17-7 loss at Macalester College, and St. Norbert remained unbeaten in the league with a 68-28 thumping of Beloit College.

Vikings roll past Beloit in straight sets

BELOIT, Wis. — The Lawrence University volleyball team got a balanced attack and great defense en route to a 3-0 Midwest Conference victory at Beloit College on Tuesday.

Lawrence defeated the Bucs 25-14, 25-23, 25-13.

Arianna Neumeyer paced the Vikings with (8-12, 3-2 MWC) with nine kills. Rachel Barthel added eight kills, and Rachael Wuensch had seven for Lawrence.

Sydney Nelson led the Vikings with 17 assists, and Lauren Ray had 15. Cyra Bammer picked up 18 digs as the Lawrence defense held Beloit (9-10, 0-4) to a .010 hitting percentage.

In the opening set, the Vikings jumped out to a 12-4 lead, and Beloit never got closer than that the rest of the way.

In the second set, the Bucs grabbed an early 7-1 advantage, but the Vikings chipped away at the lead. The Vikings trailed 18-15 before scoring three straight points, capped by Ray’s ace, to tie it at 18-18.

After an attack error by Lawrence, the Vikings scored four straight points, including two kills by Barthel, to take a 22-19 lead. Beloit cut the lead to 24-23, but a kill by Barthel closed out the set for Lawrence.

In the final set, Lawrence broke a 5-5 tie by going on a 6-1 run for an 11-6 lead. The Vikings led 15-10 and closed out the set and match on a 10-3 run. Bryttany Dove finished off the Bucs with a pair of service aces for the final two points.

Janusiak races to another MWC Performer of the Week honor

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University cross country star Josh Janusiak was named the Midwest Conference Performer of the Week after winning his first collegiate title.

Janusiak (South Milwaukee, Wis./South Milwaukee) took first place at Lawrence’s Gene Davis Invitational this past Saturday. The sophomore covered the 8,000 meters at Reid Golf Course in 25:48 to win by nine seconds. Janusiak also set the fastest time in the Midwest Conference this season, bettering the mark he had set two weeks ago by six seconds.

Led by Janusiak, Lawrence finished fourth in the team standings, and the Vikings were the top finishers among the three Midwest Conference schools taking part.

This marks the second time this season that Janusiak has claimed Performer of the Week honors. He won the award on Sept. 27 after posting the league’s fastest time at the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational in Rock Island, Ill.

Lawrence returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Winneconne, Wis., for the Kollege Town Invitational at Lake Breeze Golf Club.

Bammer wins MWC Player of the Week; hits milestone in the process

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University volleyball standout Cyra Bammer has been named the Midwest Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

Bammer (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville), a junior defensive specialist, also passed 1,000 career digs as Lawrence won both of its matches last week.

Bammer posted a career high in digs to lead the Lawrence defense as the Vikings posted straight-sets victories over Monmouth College and Knox College. Bammer, who has 1,060 digs for her career, collected 64 digs in the two matches and averaged 12.8 digs per set.

Bammer picked up a career-best 35 digs in Lawrence’s 3-0 win over Knox, eclipsing her previous high of 32 vs. UW-Superior back in 2014. Bammer collected 29 digs in Lawrence’s 3-0 win over Monmouth. She also added four service aces in the two matches.

Led by Bammer, Lawrence held Knox and Monmouth to a .090 hitting percentage.

The Week Ahead: October 10-16

APPLETON, Wis. — It’s a busy Fall Festival week for Lawrence University athletics as football and volleyball host events this weekend. Lawrence also will induct six new members, Kolade Agbaje-Williams, Chris Braier, Claire Getzoff, Lis Pollock, Katie Wilkin and Stan Preston, into its Intercollegiate Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday.

Missed opportunities costly in Vikings’ loss at Macalester

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Lawrence University football team came up empty on four  drives Saturday and that proved costly in a 17-7 Midwest Conference loss at Macalester College.

The Vikings gave up the ball on downs at the Macalester 30-yard line and 34, missed one field goal and had another one blocked. The Scots (5-1, 4-0 MWC) hit on one long run play and took advantage of a fumble to set up another touchdown to stay unbeaten in the league.

Quarterback Philip Santiago completed 16-of-36 passes for 182 yards and a touchdown for the Vikings (2-3, 1-2). He also ran eight times for 55 yards. Cam Boerm caught six passes for 86 yards and a score for Lawrence.

Jacob Jones paced Macalester with 13 carries for 73 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Christian Adams was only 9-of-23 passing for 107 yards.

Lawrence linebacker Jake Gostisha had another big game as he piled up a game-high 12 tackles, including 0.5 tackles for loss.

On the second play from scrimmage, Matt Bonazzoli broke free for a 47-yard touchdown run, and the Scots led 7-0 just 41 seconds into the game.

Quarterback Ryan Butterfield fumbled on the first possession for the Vikings, and Cash McGregor recovered at the Macalester 47-yard line. The Scots needed just four plays to score as Jones ran 24 yards for a touchdown and a 14-0 lead.

The Scots were up 17-0 when Lawrence drove to the Macalester 34 late in the first quarter, but Butterfield’s fourth-down pass was incomplete.

Lawrence took the opening kickoff of the second half and moved 86 yards in 15 plays for a touchdown to cut the lead to 17-7. Santiago hit Boerm with a nine-yard touchdown pass with 8:08 left in the third. The Vikings had two big plays on the drive as Santiago found Chris Shaw for 23 yards and Boerm caught a 22-yard pass.

The Vikings took their next possession and moved 57 yards to the Macalester 17, but Pat O’Mahoney’s 34-yard field goal was wide. Lawrence’s next drive went 36 yards to the Macalester 18, but O’Mahoney’s 35-yard field goal was blocked.

The Vikings took its next possession and moved 51 yards to the Macalester 30 before the drive stalled. Santiago’s fourth-down pass was incomplete and the Scots took over.

The Vikings dominated the game statistically as they piled up 385 yards of offense, compared to 299 for the Scots. Lawrence had eight more first downs and an 11:40 advantage in time of possession.

Goblirsch picks up Vikings’ lone win against Grinnell

APPLETON, Wis. — The Grinnell College women’s tennis team posted an 8-1 Midwest Conference win over Lawrence University on Saturday afternoon at the Lawrence Courts.

The Vikings’ lone victory came from El Goblirsch at No. 6 singles. Goblirsch and Eden Gregory split the first two sets, with Goblirsch winning the first 6-2 and Gregory winning the second 6-4. Goblirsch then won the super-tiebreaker 10-6 for the victory.

Lawrence finished its league season with 5-4 conference record and a 6-6 overall mark. Grinnell improved to 8-1 and 7-0 in the conference.
