APPLETON, Wis. — The focus turns to Lawrence University volleyball this week as the Vikings look to wrap up a berth in the four-team Midwest Conference Tournament. Lawrence travels to Grinnell and Cornell this weekend and a pair of wins would guarantee a spot in the tournament.

Fast Fact: Junior Cyra Bammer was named the Midwest Conference Defensive Player of the Week after posting a career-high 35 digs against Knox. She also became the ninth player in Lawrence history to post 1,000 career digs. The Vikings have now won five straight conference matches and are in third place in the Midwest Conference. Lawrence also controls its own destiny in terms of making the four-team MWC Tournament. If Lawrence wins both matches this weekend, the Vikings would make the tournament.

The teams did not meet from 1936-73. Lake Forest joined the Midwest Conference in 1974, and the teams have played nearly every year since.

Fast Fact: Lawrence defensive lineman Chris Edwards blocked his first career kick when he knocked aside an extra point in the first quarter against St. Norbert. Linebacker Jake Gostisha continues to show his nose for the ball with his fourth interception of the season against the Green Knights. The four interceptions leads the Midwest Conference.

Early goal lets Pioneers edge Lawrence

GRINNELL, Iowa — The Grinnell College women’s soccer team scored in the fifth minute Sunday and made that goal stand up in a 1-0 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University.

Hannah Truesdale scored an unassisted goal just 4:28 into the match to put the Pioneers (6-6-2, 4-2-1 MWC).

Goalkeeper Regan Kasprak made four saves to get the shutout for Grinnell. Kori Looker made 13 saves for the Vikings (1-11-0, 0-6-0).

Big second half leads Grinnell past Lawrence

GRINNELL, Iowa — The Grinnell College men’s soccer team scored four second-half goals Sunday en route to a 5-0 Midwest Conference win over Lawrence University.

The Pioneers (8-5-1, 4-2-1 MWC) scored in the 38th minute and took a 1-0 lead into the break. Grinnell then got two goals apiece from Kyle Buse and Antonio DiMarco in the second half to seal the win.

Major May made four saves to get the shutout for Grinnell. Robert Meiser made five saves for the Vikings (5-8-1, 1-4-1).

Vikings can’t get past semis, take trio of consolation titles

MADISON, Wis. — Lawrence University women’s tennis players couldn’t break through the semifinals at the Midwest Conference Championships this weekend at Nielsen Tennis Stadium, but the Vikings did claim a trio of consolation titles.

Katie Frankel at No. 1 singles and Lindsay Holsen at No. 2 both reached the championship semifinals, and they teamed to get to the semifinals at No. 1 doubles.

Frankel stopped Leeza Bodnar of Lake Forest 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals before falling to Grinnell’s Judith Fan 6-0, 6-2.

Holsen downed Cornell’s Shashanna Moll 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals, but lost 6-1, 6-0 to Grinnell’s Amelia Cogan in the semifinals.

Frankel and Holsen defeated Bodnar and Lucia Stumbras of Lake Forest 8-4 in the quarterfinals, but Grinnell’s Fan and Cogan turned the tables and beat Frankel and Holsen 8-4 in the semifinals.

At No. 4 singles, Annie Harincar grabbed the consolation title. After losing in the championship quarterfinals, Harincar bounced back to beat Beloit’s Emma Hahn 8-1 in the consolation semifinals. Harincar then knocked off Knox’s Annaliese McDermott 8-5 in the consolation final.

Lawrence also took the consolation titles at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles.

Harincar and partner Alicia Lex lost in the championship quarterfinals at No. 2 but came back to win two matches. They defeated Monmouth’s Morgan Holle and Natalie Curtis 8-3 in the semis and topped Ripon’s Carly Wesner and Samantha Kiesner 8-4 in the consolation final.

At No. 3 doubles, Lawrence’s Alexis Shannon and Elana Lambert fell in the championship quarterfinals but then won a pair of matches. Shannon and Lambert took down Monmouth’s Lexi Tibbs and Simone Johnson 8-3 in the semifinals and topped Knox’s Emily Miller and Clare Colt 8-5 for the consolation title.

Vikings, Rams battle to overtime tie

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa — The Lawrence University men’s soccer team battled to a 2-2 double-overtime tie on Saturday in a Midwest Conference match with Cornell College.

The teams went scoreless through the 20 minutes over overtime, but Lawrence (5-7-1, 1-3-1 MWC) had the better of the play in the extra session. Lawrence had a 9-6 edge in shots in the overtime and a 22-14 edge for the match.

Taylor Reifert got the scoring started for Lawrence when he found the back of the net off a pass from Jawad Alweleidat at the 8:55 mark.

Cornell (6-4-4, 1-3-2) got a goal from Abubakar Shehu in the 23rd minute to tie it, and then took a 2-1 lead on Facundo Benavidez’s goal at 60:00.

Jack Blodgett then forced the overtime with his goal off an assist from Reifert at 73:36.

Robert Meiser made four saves for Lawrence, and Jerome Richards stopped 12 shots for the Rams.

Cornell scores in overtime to edge Lawrence

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa — The Cornell College women’s soccer team scored just 1:06 into overtime Saturday to down Lawrence University 2-1 in a Midwest Conference match.

Deidre Franzen scored an unassisted goal at the 91:06 mark to lift the Rams (3-11-0, 1-5-0 MWC) to the victory.

Ashley Quesada had scored in the 65th minute to stake Cornell to a 1-0 lead, but the Vikings (1-10-0, 0-5-0) battled back. Lawrence’s Mari Hubanks scored an unassisted goal at 69:36 to tie it at 1-1.

Kori Looker made eight saves for the Vikings, and Clara Garcia stopped five shots for Cornell.

Neumeyer, aces power Vikings past Ripon

APPLETON, Wis. — Arianna Neumeyer pounded out 22 kills, and the Lawrence University volleyball team served up 14 aces Saturday to lead the Vikings to a 3-1 Midwest Conference victory over Ripon College at Alexander Gymnasium.

Lawrence won the match 25-23, 25-27, 25-20, 25-15.

Neumeyer, who hit .288 for the match, also picked up four aces and 18 digs for the Vikings (10-12, 5-2 MWC), who have won five straight.

Claire Vinopal added 11 kills for Lawrence with several coming as she pounced on balls just creeping over the net. Rachael Wuensch picked up 10 kills, an ace, two blocks and seven digs.

Rachel Barthel added nine kills, three aces and 12 digs for the Vikings. Lauren Ray led the Vikings with 30 assists and also had four aces and 13 digs. Sydney Nelson added 22 assists, a pair of aces and six digs. Lawrence libero Cyra Bammer had a match-high 28 digs.

The Vikings trailed 22-21 in the opening set before Lawrence got back-to-back kills from Vinopal and Colleen Nowlan to take the lead. A service error tied the match at 23-23, but Nowlan and Neumeyer closed out the set with kills.

The second set was tied at 25-25 when Katie Berrell and Kat Kulas picked up kills to give Ripon (15-7, 4-2) the second set and tie the match.

Lawrence trailed 13-7 in the third set, but Neumeyer served the Vikings back into the set. The Vikings got four consecutive kills on her serve to close to 13-12.

The Vikings finally took the lead for good at 20-19 after a Ripon attack error. Lawrence led 22-20 after a Ripon service error, and the Vikings got kills from Vinopal and Neumeyer to take a 24-20 lead. A Ripon attack error gave Lawrence the set and the Vikings led 2-1.

The Vikings raced out of the gate in the fourth set by scoring the first six points. Lawrence built an 11-1 lead, and Ripon never got closer than 10 points the rest of the way. Neumeyer closed out the set and match with a kill.

Big second quarter propels St. Norbert past Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. — The St. Norbert College football team scored 35 second-quarter points Saturday to break open a close game and went on to a 62-0 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Ron Roberts Field at the Banta Bowl.

The game turned early in the second quarter with St. Norbert (4-2, 4-0 MWC) holding a 6-0 lead. Lawrence (2-4, 1-3) had driven from its 25-yard line all the way to the St. Norbert 29, but Ryan Butterfield’s pass on fourth-and-three fell incomplete.

J.T. Crosby hit Samuel Staehling on a 71-yard scoring pass on the next play, and St. Norbert led 13-0. After St. Norbert got another one-play drive on Elijah Fort’s 41-yard touchdown run for a 20-0 lead, the Vikings fumbled the ensuing kickoff.

St. Norbert took over at the Lawrence four, and Fort scored two plays later for a 27-0 edge. Crosby added two more short scoring runs, one set up by a fumbled punt, and the Green Knights led 41-0 at the half.

The Vikings put together two nice drives in the second half, moving to the St. Norbert six on one and the Green Knights’ 17 on the other, but came up with no points.

Quarterback Philip Santiago ran nine times for 56 yards and was 6-of-12 passing for 49 yards for the Vikings. Butterfield, who started the game at quarterback, had 13 carries for 47 yards and was 2-of-11 passing for four yards.

Crosby ran 13 times for 83 yards and three touchdowns for St. Norbert and completed 12-of-19 passes for 199 yards. Fort ran 11 times for 80 yards and three touchdowns. Staehling had two catches for 104 yards.

Linebacker Hunter Adams finished with a game-high 11 tackles for Lawrence. Linebacker Jake Gostisha finished with nine stops and picked off his fourth pass of the season.

Janusiak run leads Vikings at Kollege Town Invitational

WINNECONNE, Wis. — Josh Janusiak raced to 55th place Saturday to lead the Lawrence University cross country teams at the massive Kollege Town Invitational.

Competing in a field that featured 37 teams and 550 runners, Janusiak covered the 8,000-meter course at Lake Breeze Golf Club in 26:11 in brisk and windy conditions. Led by Janusiak, the Vikings finished 25th in the team standings with 706 points.

Freshman Joe Kortenhof was next for the Vikings in 118th place in 26:55. Ben Schaefer took 152nd in 27:30, Mayan Essak was 190th in 28:20 and Mik Patel was 191st in 28:20 to round out the scoring.

On the women side, Lawrence finished 27th with 825 points. Hannah Kinzer was the top finisher for Lawrence as she took 118th in 24:02. The next three runners were tightly bunched as Christina Sedall was 162nd in 24:47, Margaret Huck was 166th in 24:51 and Amy Hutchings was 171st in 24:56. Molly Doruska rounded out the scoring by finishing 208th in 26:12.

Vikings dispose of Lake Forest in four sets

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University volleyball team dropped the first set Friday but rebounded to defeat Lake Forest College 3-1 in a Midwest Conference match at Alexander Gymnasium.

The Vikings defeated the Foresters 23-25, 25-16, 25-21, 25-15.

Lawrence (9-12, 4-2 MWC), which has now won four straight conference matches, got a superlative performance from Arianna Neumeyer. The sophomore outside hitter racked up a match-high 18 kills to go along with 11 digs and two service aces. Rachel Barthel added nine kills, and Claire Vinpol had seven for Lawrence.

Lauren Ray piled up 23 assists for the Vikings, and Sydney Nelson added 14. Cyra Bammer piled up 15 digs to lead Lawrence.

Paige Jespersen led Lake Forest (5-13, 1-4) with 11 kills, and Lexi Kleva had 35 assists.
