Demski, Duffy lead Lawrence past Beavers

CLERMONT, Fla. — Jessica Demski went the distance and Tierney Duffy collected three hits Monday to lead the Lawrence University softball team to an 8-1 nonconference win over the University of Maine-Farmington.

Demski allowed only four hits, struck out two and walked one for the victory. Duffy went 3-for-3 and scored a pair of runs, and Anna Wawiorka drove in three runs to pace the Vikings (4-1).

The Vikings jumped on top in the second inning when Taylor Dodson walked, went to second on a wild pitch and later scored on an error. The Beavers (1-4) tied it at 1-1 with a run in the bottom of the fourth.

Lawrence took command in the top of the fifth with three runs. Katie Schumacher started the inning with a double, and Duffy then had a two-out single to put two runners aboard. Wawiorka then drove in a pair of runs with a single to put Lawrence up 3-1. Wawiorka came around to score when Savanna Marsicek’s fly ball was misplayed in the outfield.

The Vikings sealed the win with four runs in the top of the seventh with the help of three Farmington errors. An error and Duffy’s single got things started, and Wawiorka then squeezed a run home. Duffy then stole home to put Lawrence up 6-1, and Lawrence added two more runs with the help of two errors for the final margin.

Kailyn Hill pitched the first five innings and took the loss for the Beavers.

Pair of four-run innings power Lawrence past St. Olaf

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — A pair of four-run innings powered the Lawrence University baseball team to a 9-2 nonconference win over St. Olaf College on Monday.

The Vikings scored four times in the fifth to take control and four more runs in the ninth to seal the win.

Matt Holliday went 3-for-3 with a run batted in and three runs scored to pace Lawrence’s 15-hit attack. Holliday also pitched the first six innings, giving up seven hits and two runs while striking out two and walking one, to get the win. Dan Rothbauer worked the final three innings to pick up his first collegiate save.

Andrew Lauber, Travis Weber, Carl Olsen, Anthony Ortiz and Zach Rabideau all had two hits for the Vikings (2-6). Lauber drove in three runs, and Weber drove in a pair.

The Vikings grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second when Holliday was hit by a pitch and later scored on Olsen’s single. Lawrence then pulled away in the fifth.

Singles from Ortiz and Rabideau put two runners aboard, and Rothbauer and Holliday followed with run-scoring singles to put the Vikings up 3-0. Weber followed with a two-run double to put the Vikings up 5-0.

The Oles (2-3) struck back for two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the Vikings sealed the win with four runs in the ninth.

Nolan Spencer’s double, Rabideau’s single and an intentional walk to Holliday loaded the bases with one out. Lauber then smacked a two-out, three-run triple to put the Vikings up 8-2. Olsen followed with a single to score Lauber to complete the scoring.

Thomas Peterson worked the first five innings and took the loss for St. Olaf.

Lawrence sweeps MWC weekly softball awards

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University softball team swept the Midwest Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week awards as Meg Krautsch and Maddie MacLean were honored.

Krautsch (Oshkosh, Wis./West) was named Player of the Week, and MacLean (Arlington, Wash./Arlington) earned Pitcher of the Week honors.

Krautsch, a sophomore shortstop, powered the offense that led Lawrence to a 3-1 record in the opening part of its spring break trip to Clermont, Fla.

Krautsch hit .357 by going 5-for-14 with three doubles, a homer and a team-best six runs batted in. Krautsch, who tied for the team lead with four runs scored, hit a two-run homer to help the Vikings overcome a four-run deficit in Lawrence’s 7-6 win over SUNY-Fredonia. Krautsch also handled all 18 of her chances in the field flawlessly.

A freshman pitcher, MacLean got her college career off to a perfect start with a 2-0 record last week in Florida. In her two starts, MacLean posted a 1.40 earned run average with six strikeouts and six walks.

In her collegiate debut, MacLean went all eight innings in a 7-6 win over SUNY-Fredonia. She allowed eight hits and only three earned runs in picking up her first college victory.

MacLean followed that with a complete-game victory in a 10-2 win over UW-Platteville. She allowed six hits and no earned runs in the win over the Pioneers.

MacLean also hit .400 with a double, a homer and four runs batted in in three games.

Lawrence returns to action on Monday as it faces the University of Maine-Farmington and Kalamazoo College. The Vikings are playing 12 games in Florida during spring break before returning to Appleton.

Big inning pushes Bowdoin past Vikings

AUBURNDALE, Fla. — A five-run second inning proved to be the difference as Bowdoin College topped Lawrence University 9-3 in a nonconference game on Sunday.

Sean Mullane, Brandon Lope, Cody Todesco all had two hits apiece to pace the Polar Bears (5-0). Richard Arms allowed one run over five innings to get the win for Bowdoin.

Kyle Duex gave up 12 hits and seven runs over seven innings and took the loss for Lawrence (1-6).

Freshman Nolan Spencer went 3-for-5 and scored a run for the Vikings, and fellow rookie Andrew Lauber went 2-for-4 and drove in a run.

Lawrence grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Spencer led off the game with a double and later scored on Dan Rothbauer’s ground ball.

Bowdoin then scored five times in the second on six hits with the big blow being Peter Cimini’s two-run double. The Polar Bears made it 7-1 with a pair of runs in the fourth, but the Vikings helped them out with a pair of hit batsmen and a walk.

Lawrence added single runs in the sixth and eighth. Lauber picked up a run-scoring single in the sixth, and Holliday singled and later scored on a wild pitch in the eighth.

Lawrence returns to action on Monday with a nonconference game against St. Olaf College.

Pipers topple Lawrence

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Hamline University men’s tennis team swept the doubles action and used that to post a 6-3 nonconference win over Lawrence University on Saturday.

Hamline (6-5) won three tight doubles matches and won the Nos. 4-6 singles contests.

Lawrence (5-4) took the top three singles matches as No. 1 player David Jumes posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Brian DeCoret split the first two sets at No. 2 but took the super-tiebreaker 10-8 and the match. Bill Schuman-Kline rolled to a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 3.

Demski tosses shutout as Vikings top St. Lawrence

CLERMONT, Fla. — Jessica Demski scattered six hits Saturday to toss her second career shutout as the Lawrence University softball team topped St. Lawrence University 8-0 in a nonconference game.

Demski did not allow a runner past second base en route to earning her first victory of the season.

Anna Wawiorka went 3-for-3 and scored a run to lead the Vikings (3-1), and Tierney Duffy, Katie Schumacher and Taylor Dodson all had two hits for Lawrence, and Duffy, Dodson and Meg Krautsch all drove in a pair of runs.

Lawrence led 1-0 after Dodson doubled and scored on Kori Looker’s sacrifice fly in the second, but the Vikings broke the game open in the fifth.

Schumacher started the fifth with a double, and a walk to Demski and an error loaded the bases. Duffy followed with a two-run single and the Vikings led 3-0.

After another error and a popup, Krautsch delivered a two-run single to put the Vikings up 5-0. Dodson followed with another two-run single, and Lawrence led 7-0.

The Vikings ended the game in the bottom of the sixth via the eight-run rule when Duffy singled, stole second and scored on Wawiorka’s single.

Allie Courtwright allowed seven runs over 4 1/3 innings and took the loss for the Saints (0-1).

Marsicek, Schumacher homer as Vikings rout UW-Platteville

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Lawrence University softball team pounded out 12 hits, including a pair of homers, and routed UW-Platteville 10-2 in a nonconference game on Saturday.

Savanna Marsicek went 3-for-5 with a double and a homer, and Katie Schumacher went 2-for-4 with a double and a homer to pace Lawrence (2-1). Anna Wawiorka also had a pair of hits, including a double and drove in two runs, and Tierney Duffy collected two hits for the Vikings.

Rookie pitcher Maddie MacLean went the distance, allowed six hits, struck out four and walked four, to get the win. MacLean also drove in a pair of runs. Jordan Schmike went five innings and took the loss.

Lawrence trailed 2-0 before popping off for four runs in the top of the second. Duffy picked up a run-scoring single, and Wawiorka added a two-run double to give the Vikings a 3-2 lead. Meg Krautsch then tacked on a run-scoring double for a 4-2 edge.

The Vikings took command by scoring four more times in the fifth. MacLean had a two-run single to push the lead to 6-2, and the Vikings tacked on two more runs with the help of four Platteville errors in the inning and led 8-2.

Lawrence added single runs in the sixth and seventh on homers by Marsicek and Schumacher.

Hamilton takes two from Vikings

AUBURNDALE, Fla. — The Hamilton College baseball team took a pair of games from Lawrence University in a nonconference doubleheader on Friday as the Vikings started their spring break trip.

The Continentals won the opener 9-3 and took the nightcap 17-6.

In the first game, Hamilton (5-3) scored nine runs on only eight hits as the Vikings (1-5) committed seven errors. Ryan Wolfsburg went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs for Hamilton. Andrew Haser worked 5 2/3 innings to pick up the win.

Nolan Spencer and Zach Rabideau both went 2-for-3 and Spencer scored a pair of runs for Lawrence.

The game was tied 2-2 after three innings, but Hamilton scored four runs on five hits and three errors in the fourth to take the lead for good. The Continentals added three more runs in the sixth to pull away.

In the nightcap, Hamilton collected 14 hits, and Lawrence pitchers issued 10 walks. Wolfsburg went 3-for-4 to lead Hamilton, and Haser hit a grand slam in an eight-run second inning.

Dan DePaoli pitched five innings to pick up the win, and Cullen Ellis worked one-plus inning and took the loss.

Dan Rothbauer and Travis Weber both went 2-for-4 to lead Lawrence, and Rothbauer drove in a pair of runs.

Lawrence led 3-0 after the top of the first thanks to Weber’s run-scoring triple, but the Vikings gave up four runs in the bottom of the inning and eight more in the second.

Vikings nip Fredonia in eight innings

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Lawrence University softball team rallied from a four-run deficit Friday to post a 7-6 nonconference win in eight innings over the State University of New York-Fredonia.

Rookie Maddie MacLean picked up her first collegiate victory in her first start for Lawrence (1-1). She allowed eight hits, struck out two and walked two.

MacLean  also went 3-for-4 with a homer and drove in a pair of runs, and shortstop Meg Krautsch went 3-for-5 with a homer and drove in three runs for the Vikings. Savanna Marsicek and Anna Wawiorka both added a pair of hits for Lawrence.

Lawrence trailed 4-0 heading to the fifth, but the Vikings scored three times to get right back in the game. Marsicek started the inning with a double, and Krautsch followed with a double to cut the lead to 4-1. After an out, MacLean blasted a two-run homer to trim the lead to 4-3.

Lawrence then grabbed a 5-4 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. Marsicek started the inning with a walk, and Krautsch followed with a two-run homer to put the Vikings ahead.

Fredonia (0-3) scratched out an unearned run off MacLean in the bottom of the seventh to tie it at 5-5.

Following the international tiebreaker rule in the eighth, the Vikings had Katie Schumacher at second to start the inning. Sofie Pedersen reached on a sacrifice bunt and an error put runners at the corners. The Blue Devils then got a lineout and cut Schumacher down at home trying to score. Wawiorka followed with a double to score Pedersen, and Wawiorka scored after a wild pitch, walk and an error to put the Vikings up 7-5.

The Blue Devils got a run-scoring double in the bottom of the eighth to trim the lead to 7-6, but MacLean retired the next three hitters to end it.

Jumes, DeCorte win but Knights top Lawrence

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Lawrence University men’s tennis team dropped a 7-2 nonconference decision to Calvin College on Friday.

David Jumes and Brian DeCorte picked up the two victories for the Vikings (5-3). Jumes remained undefeated on the season with a 6-4, 7-6 victory over Matt Buesing at No. 1 singles. DeCorte was a 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) winner of Matt VanWinkle at No. 2 singles.

Calvin (4-2) swept the doubles and the Nos. 3-6 singles matches.

Lawrence returns to action on Saturday when it takes on Hamline University.
