APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University men’s basketball team hits the road for a pair of Midwest Conference games this week. The Vikings go to Lake Forest College on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. game before heading to Galesburg, Ill., to face Knox College at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Cardinal takes two titles to pace Vikings at Lawrence Double Dual
APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University swimming star Hayley Cardinal took two titles on Saturday to pace the Vikings at the Lawrence Double Dual at Boldt Natatorium.
Cardinal won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.82 and grabbed first in the 200 breaststroke in 2:28.36. Cardinal also took second in the 200 individual medley in 2:20.83.
Cardinal also teamed with Paige Witter, Emily Flack and Lizzy Garcia to take second in the 200 medley relay in 1:55.06.
Witter picked up a pair of second-place finishes as she took the runner-up spot in the 100 butterfly in 1:01.84 and the 200 butterfly in 2:18.11. Sarah Schweickart finished behind Witter, taking third in the 200 butterfly in 2:29.66. She also took third in the 200 IM in 2:23.65. Emmi Zheng picked up a third place in the 200 breaststroke in 2:40.48.
Garcia grabbed third in the 50 freestyle in 26.53, and Flack picked up a third place in the 200 backstroke in 2:20.67.
The Lawrence women defeated Lake Forest College 146-117 and fell 183-78 to UW-Whitewater.
Lawrence’s top finisher on the men’s side was Christian Bell, who finished fourth in the 50 freestyle in 23.10 seconds. Whitewater defeated Lawrence 241-14, and Lake Forest downed the Vikings 244-31.
Saints slip past Lawrence
APPLETON, Wis. — The 15th-ranked College of St. Scholastica held on for a 3-1 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Lawrence University on Saturday at the Appleton Family Ice Center.
St. Scholastica (11-4-2, 9-3-0 NCHA) led 2-0 early in the third period, but the Vikings cut that lead in half with just 1:47 left.
The Vikings (6-10-1, 5-6-1) were on the power play and pulled goaltender Mattias Soderqvist for an extra attacker with 3:09 remaining. The power play expired with just over two minutes left but Lawrence scored 14 seconds later on Lane King’s third goal of the season. Brandon Boelter and Renato Engler picked up assists for the Vikings.
Lawrence pulled Soderqvist again with just over a minute remaining in an effort to tie the game. St. Scholastica defenseman Connor Faupel picked off a Lawrence pass and fired it into the empty net to seal the win with 26 seconds left.
Soderqvist finished with 31 saves for the Vikings, and St. Scholastica goaltender Tyler Bruggeman made 28 saves to pick up the win.
St. Scholastica took a 1-0 lead on Derek Sutliffe’s goal just 4:55 into the first period. The score stayed that way until the first shot by the Saints in the third period as Dylan Nowakowski scored on the power play for a 2-0 edge.
St. Scholastica went 1-for-5 on the power play, and Lawrence finished 0-for-5.
Vikings edged by Knox
APPLETON, Wis. — The Knox College women’s basketball team blew out to a big early lead Saturday but had to hang on for a 73-66 Midwest Conference win over Lawrence University at Alexander Gymnasium.
Patsy Kealey led Lawrence with a double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds as four Vikings scored in double figures. Andrea Wilkinson also had a double-double for the Vikings with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Liz Arco and Lauren Deveikis added 11 points apiece for Lawrence, and Arco picked up four blocks.
Jamie Blue also had a double-double for Knox (9-6, 4-6 MWC) with 20 points and 11 rebounds, and Naja Woods added 17 points.
Knox scored the first 16 points of the game and led 24-10 after the first quarter. The Vikings were still down by 15 when they stormed back in the final eight minutes of the second quarter.
Lawrence (0-16, 0-11) went on a 16-4 run to trim the margin to 35-32 with 1:32 left before the half. Arco scored the first six points of the run, and Kealey scored six points during that stretch. Knox would lead 39-34 at the half.
The Vikings trimmed the lead 41-40 on Deveikis’ jumper early in the third quarter, but Knox scored the game’s next nine points to stretch the lead back to 50-40. Lawrence finished the third quarter on a 12-5 run, capped by Leah Reeves’ layup, to cut the margin to 55-52 after three.
Knox pushed the lead back to eight at 64-56, but the Vikings scored the next eight points, capped by Deveikis’ 3-pointer, to tie the game at 64-64 with 2:59 left. Knox then scored the next six points to stretch the lead to 70-64, and the Vikings got no closer than four points after that.
Lawrence rolls to big win over Prairie Fire
APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University men’s basketball team put on a dominating performance on Saturday at Alexander Gymnasium and rolled to an 85-51 Midwest Conference victory over Knox College.
Jamie Nikitas led three Vikings (6-10, 3-8 MWC) in double figures with 21 points, and he added seven rebounds and three steals. Nikitas moved past three Lawrence Hall of Famers, head coach Joel DePagter, Matt Miota and Joel Ungrodt into seventh place on Lawrence’s career scoring list with 1,263 points.
Lawrence’s Jeremy Stephani hit four 3-pointers on his way to 14 points, and Ben Peterson scored 11 points and added a game-high eight rebounds.
Braden Adams scored nine points to lead Knox (1-14, 0-10).
Lawrence tied a season high with 12 3-pointers, and the Vikings shot a season-best 40 percent (12-30) from beyond the arc. Lawrence also dominated the glass with a 43-25 rebounding edge as the Vikings grabbed 17 offensive boards.
The Vikings started to pull away late in the first half. Lawrence was up 28-21 when it went on a 17-4 run over the final 5:22 of the half. Connor Weas scored six points in that stretch, Stephani added five and Nikitas had four as the Vikings led 45-25 at the break.
Lawrence then opened the second half with another huge run to seal the victory. The Vikings limited Knox to just four points over the first 10:42 of the second half. Lawrence pushed the lead to 67-29 as Peterson scored six points and George Mavrakis added five during that stretch.
Lawrence would go on to lead by as many as 39 points as all 10 Vikings scored at least four points in the game.
Saints score early to topple Lawrence
APPLETON, Wis. — The 15th-ranked College of St. Scholastica struck early in each period Friday and rode that to a 6-2 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Lawrence University at the Appleton Family Ice Center.
The Saints (10-4-2, 8-3-0 NCHA) scored just 2:40 into the first period, scored a pair of goals in the first minutes of the second period and scored just 1:18 into the third.
Dylan Nowakowski scored twice for St. Scholastica, and Matt Moore scored both goals for Lawrence (6-9-1, 5-5-1).
Tyler Bruggeman stopped 28 shots for the Saints, including a barrage on a pair of Lawrence power plays. Mattias Soderqvist made 37 saves for the Vikings.
Kris McKinzie scored off a rebound less than three minutes into the game to give St. Scholastica a 1-0 lead. The score stayed that way until early in the second period.
Michael Spring scored 1:30 into the second period, and Josh Hansen scored 29 seconds later to give St. Scholastica a 3-0 advantage.
Moore got Lawrence on a board with a goal at the 9:53 mark of the second with assists from Renato Engler and Brandon Boelter.
The Vikings were still down 3-1 entering the third period when Kale Derkson scored just 1:18 into the period for a 4-1 lead.
Nowakowski scored the first of his two goals at the 7:12 mark, but Moore found the back of the net again at 10:51 to trim the margin to 5-2. Josh Koepplinger and Ryan Eardley picked up assists on that goal for the Vikings.
Lawrence had a power-play chance less than three minutes later, but Bruggeman was outstanding in turning the Vikings away. Nowakowski then added a goal with just 25 seconds remaining.
The teams will wrap up the series on Saturday afternoon.
Hockey series preview: Lawrence vs. No. 15 St. Scholastica
APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University hosts No. 15 St. Scholastica in a key Northern Collegiate Hockey Association series this weekend at the Appleton Family Ice Center. Lawrence, which is riding a four-game unbeaten streak, is in third place in the NCHA’s North Division and St. Scholastica is three points ahead of the Vikings in second place. The puck drops at 7 p.m. on Friday, and Saturday’s game is set for 4 p.m.
Ripon pulls away from Vikings in second half
APPLETON, Wis. — The Ripon College women’s basketball team pulled away in the second half Wednesday and posted a 54-39 Midwest Conference win over Lawrence University at Alexander Gymnasium.
Jonalee Elliott scored 10 points, and Maggie Oimoen added nine to pace the Red Hawks (10-6, 6-5 MWC).
Aubrey Scott scored 13 points, grabbed four rebounds, picked up three assists and added three steals to lead Lawrence (0-15, 0-10). Andrea Wilkinson added 11 points, and Liz Arco came off the bench and chipped in with eight points.
Lawrence trailed by as many as 11 points in the second quarter but went on a 9-2 run over the final 3:00 of the first half to trim the margin to 22-18 at the break. Arco scored six points in that stretch and Scott added a three-point play.
Ripon opened the second half by outscoring Lawrence 11-5 over the first 7:29 of the third quarter to stretch the lead to 33-23. The Vikings trailed by nine after three periods and couldn’t get any closer in the fourth quarter.
Vikings drop heartbreaker to Ripon
APPLETON, Wis. — The Ripon College men’s basketball team pulled out an 81-80 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University behind 41 points from Ty Sabin on Wednesday at Alexander Gymnasium.
Sabin hit 17-of-25 shots from the floor, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc, to pace the Red Hawks (10-6, 8-3 MWC).
Lawrence star Jamie Nikitas led four Vikings in double figures with 25 points, and he added eight assists, four rebounds and three steals. Troy Miller and Jeremy Stephani added 13 points apiece for the Vikings (5-10, 2-8), and Mitch Willer chipped in 11 points.
The game featured 10 ties and the biggest lead for either team was five points.
Miller scored eight consecutive points for the Vikings, hitting back-to-back 3-pointers and picking up a layup sandwiched around a pair of Ripon baskets, to give Lawrence a 75-74 lead with 2:34 left. Sabin countered with a driving layup to put the Red Hawks up 76-75 with 1:24 left.
On the ensuing possession, Stephani was going up to shoot a 3-pointer and had the ball knocked away. He caught the loose ball, buried a 3-pointer but was called for a travel so the basket was waived off.
Sabin was fouled and hit two free throws to give Ripon a 78-75 lead. Nikitas countered with a layup with 20 seconds left to cut the margin to one. Ty Ketz hit a pair of free throws for Ripon with 15 seconds remaining to push the lead back to 80-77.
Nikitas then missed a closely contested 3-pointer with 10 seconds left. Ripon grabbed the rebound and Sabin was fouled. He hit one free throw with four seconds remaining to seal the win before Connor Weas hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the Vikings.
Women’s basketball preview: Lawrence vs. Ripon, vs. Knox
APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University women’s basketball team returns to Alexander Gymnasium for a pair of Midwest Conference games this week. The Vikings host rival Ripon College on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., and Knox College comes to Appleton for a 4 p.m. game on Saturday.
