Nikitas picks national honor from USBWA

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University men’s basketball standout Jamie Nikitas picked up another national honor Tuesday when he was named the United States Basketball Writers Association Division III Player of the Week.

Nikitas (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) also has been chosen for the D3hoops.com Team of the Week and was named Midwest Conference Player of the Week.

A senior guard, Nikitas is the first Lawrence player to win the USBWA award. He picked up the second national honor after a pair of huge games last week.

Nikitas averaged 36.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game as Lawrence lost a pair of close conference games on the road. Nikitas shot 55 percent from the floor and 83.3 percent from the foul line and also averaged 3.0 assists and 2.5 steals per game.

In an 84-83 overtime loss at MWC unbeaten Carroll University on Jan. 12, Nikitas poured in a career-high 40 points as he hit 12-of-22 shots from the floor and went 14-of-16 from the foul line. He also grabbed eight rebounds, handed out two assists and picked up two steals.

It was the ninth 40-point game in Lawrence history and the first time a Vikings player scored at least 40 against a team other than Grinnell College since Pete Hachmeister did it against Silver Lake College in 1975.

Nikitas followed that with 33 points and nine rebounds in a 73-69 loss at Cornell College on Jan. 16. Nikitas, who added four assists and three steals against the Rams, hit 10-of-18 shots from the floor and went 11-for-14 from the line.

On the season, Nikitas ranks fourth in all of NCAA Division III in scoring at 27.7 points per game. He now ranks 10th in career scoring at Lawrence with 1,217 points. Nikitas is just 27 points away from passing his head coach, Lawrence Hall of Famer Joel DePagter, for ninth place. He is just 32 points away from moving all the way up to seventh place on the list.

Lawrence returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Ripon College at 5:30 p.m. at Alexander Gymnasium.

Men’s basketball preview: Lawrence vs. Ripon, vs. Knox

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University men’s basketball team returns to Alexander Gymnasium for a pair of Midwest Conference games this week. The Vikings host rival Ripon College on Wednesday in a 5:30 p.m. game, and Lawrence then takes on Knox College at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Lawrence also welcomes its basketball alumni on Saturday, and more than two dozen former players will square off in the Alumni Game at 10:15 a.m.

Lawrence swimmers split at Illinois Tech

CHICAGO, Ill. — The Lawrence University swim teams split a dual meet at Illinois Tech on Saturday. The Lawrence women topped Illinois Tech 115-102, and the Scarlet Hawks topped the Lawrence men 157-40.

On the women’s side, the Vikings won seven events and were led by Paige Witter, who took a pair of firsts. Witter grabbed first in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:19.14 and won the 500 freestyle in 5:33.01.

Other individual winners for the Vikings were Emei Thompson (1,650 freestyle, 19:35.06), Emily Flack (200 freestyle, 2:06.99) and Hayley Cardinal (200 IM, 2:20.83). The 200 medley relay team of Witter, Flack, Cardinal and Lizzy Garcia took first in 1:55.52, and the 200 freestyle relay team of Garcia, Thompson, Danielle Millin and Eryn Blagg won in 1:47.22.

On the men’s side, Christian Bell won the 50 freestyle in 23.23 seconds.

Lawrence fencers split at DeCicco Duals

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The Lawrence University fencing teams split their matches Saturday at the DeCicco Duals at the University of Notre Dame.

The Lawrence men and women both went 3-3 on the day.

The men picked up a 21-6 victory over Wayne State, defeated Florida 15-12 and topped Detroit Mercy 19-8.

On the women’s side, Lawrence edged the New Jersey Institute of Techology 14-13, rolled to a 22-5 win over Wayne State and downed Detroit Mercy 22-5.

Rams pull away early to defeat Lawrence

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa — The Cornell College women’s basketball team grabbed a big early lead Saturday and went on to a 68-54 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University at the Multi-Sport Center.

Diamond Boyd posted a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds to pace Cornell (10-4, 7-2 MWC).

Lauren Deveikis came off the bench to lead Lawrence (0-14, 0-9) with 14 points in just 17 minutes of action. Aubrey Scott added 10 points and Leah Reeves grabbed eight rebounds for the Vikings.

Cornell went on a 21-2 run over the final 7:16 of the first quarter and bolted to a 28-7 lead after the first quarter.

The Vikings fought back in the second period with some help from Deveikis. Lawrence trailed 38-17 but went on a 10-1 run, with Deveikis scoring five in that stretch, to cut the margin to 39-27 with 1:48 left in the quarter.

Lawrence got to 41-30 after a Deveikis 3-pointer, but Cornell then made four consecutive free throws to lead 45-30 at the half. The Rams were 17-for-19 from the foul line in the first half and went 22-for-25 for the game.

Cornell jumped on the Vikings in the third quarter and limited Lawrence to just four points in the period. Cornell led 61-34 entering the fourth quarter, but Lawrence chipped away at the lead in the final period to close to within 14.

Late spurt leads Cornell past Vikings

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa — The Cornell College men’s basketball team scored 10 straight points late in the game Saturday to surge ahead and held on for a 73-69 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University at the Multi-Sport Center.

Lawrence star Jamie Nikitas poured in a game-high 33 points, his sixth 30-plus point game of the season, to lead the Vikings (5-9, 2-7 MWC). Nikitas also finished with nine rebounds, four assists and three steals. Jeremy Stephani added 11 points for the Vikings.

Craig Engle led Cornell (5-9, 3-6) with 20 points, and Grant Anderson and Corey Davis added 16 points apiece. Anderson also pulled down a game-high 18 rebounds.

Lawrence led by as many eight points early in the second half, and the Rams chipped away at the lead. Mitch Willer’s jumper gave Lawrence a 53-50 lead with 5:37 remaining, but Cornell went on a 10-0 run, capped by Davis’ layup with 3:07 left, to take a 60-53 advantage.

The Rams led by five when Stephani hit a 3-pointer to trim the margin to 66-64 with 32 seconds left. The Vikings fouled Davis, who made one free throw but missed the second with 24 seconds left. Lawrence grabbed the rebound, but Cody Carter intercepted the outlet pass for the Rams.

The Vikings were forced to foul, and Cornell hit six consecutive free throws in the final 17 seconds to seal the victory.

Lawrence started slowly and trailed 17-7 just eight minutes into the game. The Vikings were still down 26-18 when Ben Peterson started the rally with a 3-pointer.

The Vikings went on a 17-5 run over the final 5:26 of the first half, capped by a Nikitas 3-pointer at the buzzer, to give Lawrence a 35-31 lead at the break. Nikitas scored seven points in the run and Troy Miller added six on a pair of 3-pointers.

Vikings power past Aurora in third period

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University scored three unanswered goals in the third period Saturday to rally for a 6-4 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Aurora University at the Appleton Family Ice Center.

Nick Felan had a goal and three assists for Lawrence (6-8-1, 5-4-1 NCHA), and Renato Engler picked up a goal and two assists.

Mattias Soderqvist pushed his unbeaten streak to four games for the Vikings and made 31 saves.

Trevor Hoth had a goal and two assists for Aurora (1-13-1, 1-8-1), and Jared Rutledge made 39 saves for the Spartans.

Tim Santopoalo scored just 1:06 into the third period to give Aurora a 4-3 lead, but the Vikings rallied quickly.

Jake Kreutzer, in just his second game back from injury for the Vikings, took the puck to the right of Rutledge and went top shelf. The puck snuck inside the upper corner for a goal to tie the game at 4-4 at the 4:43 mark.

Less than a minute later, Felix Henriksson fired a puck through a screen of multiple defenders and past Rutledge to give the Vikings a 5-4 lead at the 5:30 mark. That would prove to be the game-winner, the second game-winning goal for Henriksson in as many nights.

The Vikings then stretched the lead on the power play midway through the period. Engler beat Rutledge with assists from Felan and Steve Hughes, who finished with three helpers in the game, at the 11:08 mark.

The Spartans pulled Rutledge for the final 1:40 but couldn’t score.

Felan got Lawrence on the board with his third goal of the season at the 8:54 mark of the first. Lawrence made it 2-0 on Matt Moore’s goal just 43 seconds into the second period.

Aurora scored the game’s next two goals in the ensuing 5:01 to tie it at 2-2. Lawrence grabbed a 3-2 lead on Brandon Boelter’s power-play goal at the 16:13 mark of the second, but Toth scored for Aurora with 1:08 left in the period to make the score 3-3 after two.

Lawrence finished the game with 45 shots and went 2-for-5 on the power play.

Bruning wins 3,000 to pace Vikings in season opener

OSHKOSH, Wis. — Senior Clare Bruning won the 3,000 meters on Friday to pace the Lawrence University track teams as the Vikings opened the indoor season at the UW-Oshkosh Triangular.

Bruning led a Lawrence sweep of the top seven place as she took first in the 3,000 on the Kolf Sports Center track in 11:24.32. Erin Schrobilgen was second for the Vikings in 11:29.02 and Hannah Kinzer was third in 11:40.63.

The Lawrence women also took first in the 4×400 relay in 4:43.22. Other top finishers on the women’s side included Sage Greenlee, who grabbed second in the high jump with a height of 5 feet, 3 inches, and Sierra Polzin, who was third in the 800 in 2:31.68.

On the men’s side, the top finishers were the 4×400 relay team, which took second in 3:43.46.

Max Edwards raced to third in the mile with a time of 4:31.88, and Cam Davies was fourth in 4:33.67. Josh Janusiak grabbed fourth in the 3,000 in 9:06.88.

UW-Oshkosh won on the women’s side with 142 points, Ripon was next with 43 and Lawrence had 42. On the men’s side, the Titans finished first with 143, Ripon had 80 and Lawrence had 40.
