Cross country teams win academic honor; Janusiak, Kortenhof take individual awards

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University cross country teams have again been honored for academic excellence by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Both squads were named Scholar Teams by the USTFCCCA with the men’s team posting the fifth-highest grade point average in the nation.

The men, who were honored for the sixth time in eight seasons, had a team grade point average of 3.63. LeTourneau University led the nation with a 3.80.

The women’s team was honored for the eighth consecutive season, all under the tutelage of head coach Jason Fast. The Lawrence women had a grade point average of 3.57, and Greenville College led the nation at 3.84.

To be named a Scholar Team, a minimum 3.10 grade point average is required.

Men’s cross country standouts Josh Janusiak (South Milwaukee, Wis./South Milwaukee) and Joe Kortenof (Portland, Ore./Lincoln) were both named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team. To be eligible for the award, you must have a minimum 3.30 grade point average and finish in the top 25 percent of your NCAA regional championship.

A sophomore majoring in Spanish and philosophy, Janusiak was honored the second consecutive season after posting a 3.92 grade point average. Janusiak finished 26th at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional in 25:26, the fourth-fastest in school history for 8,000 meters. He is the reigning Midwest Conference champion.

Kortenhof posted the fifth-fastest time by a freshman in the NCAA regional at 25:55 on his way to finishing 49th. Kortenhof, who has a 3.50 grade point average, is an anthropology major.

Huge second half leads Ripon past Vikings

RIPON, Wis. — A huge second half Wednesday led the Ripon College men’s basketball team to an 82-44 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University at the Storzer Center.

Ripon shot 67.7 percent from the floor on its way to 54 second-half points.

The nation’s leading scorer, Ripon’s Ty Sabin, went 9-for-15 from the floor and finished with 29 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Jeremy Stephani led Lawrence (8-11, 9-6 MWC) with 11 points, and Ben Peterson and Quinn Fisher added 10 points apiece.

Lawrence jumped out to an early 14-7 lead, but Ripon (15-5, 12-3) outscored the Vikings 21-5 over the final 11:43 of the first half and led 28-19 at the break.

Ripon went on a 9-0 run early in the second half to push its lead to 41-21 with 14:57 remaining. Lawrence got back-to-back 3-pointers from Pete Winslow and Stephani to cut the lead to 43-27.

That’s as close as the Vikings would get, and Ripon stretched the final margin by scoring the final 18 points of the game.

Ripon pulls out to big early lead, tops Vikings

RIPON, Wis. — The Ripon College women’s basketball team pulled out to a big early lead Wednesday and went on to an 83-30 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University at the Storzer Center.

Ripon jumped out to a 19-5 lead after the first quarter and stretched that margin to 45-16 at the half.

Olivia Hoesley scored a game-high 15 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead Lawrence (2-18, 0-15 MWC).

Megan Jensen and Emma McDonald scored 14 points apiece to pace Ripon (14-6, 12-3), and Maggie Oimoen added 13 points and nine rebounds.

Ripon scored the first 14 points of the game and led by 24 points early in the second quarter. The Vikings trimmed the margin to 18 points after a 3-pointer from Hoesley and a jumper from Shonell Benjamin.

The Red Hawks went on a 12-1 run to finish the second quarter and led by 29 points at the break. The final margin was Ripon’s largest lead of the game.

LU Pride Game set for Saturday at Alexander Gymnasium

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is sponsoring the LU Pride Game on Saturday when the Vikings host Monmouth College in a Midwest Conference doubleheader.

All proceeds from the LGBTQ awareness games go to the You Can Play Project. You Can Play works to ensure the safety and inclusion of all in sports, including LGBTQ athletes, coaches and fans. You Can Play seeks to challenge the culture of locker rooms and spectator areas by focusing only on an athlete’s skills, work ethic and competitive spirit.

The Lawrence games get started with the women facing Monmouth at 1 p.m. at Alexander Gymnasium. The men’s game against the Scots follows at 3 p.m. There is no admission fee for Lawrence basketball. Adding a special element to Saturday’s game are local Special Olympians, who will play a game during halftime of the men’s contest.

The Lawrence SAAC will be handing out free pizza for students and T-shirts will be available for purchase. SAAC representatives will put on a 50/50 raffle, have a pledge wall and collect donations for You Can Play.

The Lawrence SAAC is a committee made up of student-athletes assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience. The SAAC also offers input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes’ lives on NCAA member institution campuses. SAAC also is involved in community outreach efforts, including events on the Lawrence campus and work in local schools.

 

Men’s basketball preview: Lawrence at Ripon, vs. Monmouth

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University men’s basketball team faces a pair of crucial Midwest Conference games this week. The Vikings travel to Ripon College on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. game at the Storzer Center. Lawrence then hosts Monmouth College on Saturday in a 3 p.m. game at Alexander Gymnasium. Lawrence is in fourth place in the MWC standings and fighting for a berth in the four-team league tournament.

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University takes on Northland College in a critical Northern Collegiate Hockey Association series this weekend at the Appleton Family Ice Center. The Vikings trail Northland by four points for the final playoff spot from the North Division with just four games left in the regular season. Friday’s game begins at 7 p.m., and the puck drops Saturday at 4 p.m.

Lawrence picks up four wins at Northwestern Duals

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The Lawrence University fencing teams combined for four wins at the Northwestern Duals this weekend at the University of Notre Dame.

The Lawrence men posted a 3-3 record, and the women finished 1-6.

On the men’s side, the Vikings defeated Incarnate Word and Caltech by the same score of 19-8 and topped Northwestern 18-9. UC-San Diego beat the Vikings 22-5, Penn State stopped the Vikings 22-5 and Princeton defeated Lawrence 20-7.

Sabre was key in Lawrence’s win over Incarnate Word as the Vikings won those bouts 9-0. Sabre took the bouts vs. Caltech 7-2, and foil dominated Northwestern 8-1.

On the women’s side, Lawrence’s only win was a 22-5 victory over Caltech. Again, it was sabre winning the bouts 9-0.

In the other matches UC-San Diego, Farleigh Dickinson and Incarnate Word all beat the Vikings by the same score of 16-11. Temple beat Lawrence 24-3, Penn State topped the Vikings 23-4 and Princeton shut out the Vikings 27-0.

Vikings cruise past MSOE in season opener

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — The Lawrence University men’s tennis team opened its season Sunday with a 7-2 nonconference victory over MSOE at the Elite Sports Club River Glen.

The Vikings led 2-1 after the doubles and then rolled by taking five of the six singles matches.

Izaya Turenne and David Brooker were 8-6 winners at No. 2 doubles and the rookie team of Cade Francour and Connor Maloney posted an easy 8-2 victory at No. 3.

The Vikings won the top two singles matches as David Jumes took the No. 1 match in straight sets and Bill Schuman-Kline won at No. 2 by taking the supertiebreaker 10-3.

Francour at No. 4, Aidan Delgado at No. 5 and Brooker at No. 5 all won in straight sets.
