LU baseball tops UW-Stevens Point

A.J. Nathan delivered a run-scoring single in the bottom of the eighth, and the Lawrence University baseball team came up with a big double play in the top of the ninth to beat UW-Stevens Point 10-9 in a nonconference game Wednesday at Don Hawkins Field.

Luke Kostreva pitched the final two innings to pick up the victory and went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and three runs batted in. Robert Rashid and Andy Frelich both went 3-for-5 for the Vikings.

In a wild and windy night, Lawrence (7-25) jumped on the Pointers (24-12) early and built a 4-1 lead after two innings.

UWSP rallied for three runs in the third to tie it and then scored twice in the fourth and two more times in the fifth to take an 8-4 lead.

Lawrence battled back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Rashid started the rally with a double, and Frelich followed with a single to cut score Rashid and cut the lead to 8-5. Kostreva then blasted a two-run homer to right to trim the margin to 8-7.

The Vikings then took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh. Rashid got things started again with a walk and a stolen base. Frelich singled to score Rashid and tie the game at 8-8.

After a walk to Kostreva and a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third, Tyler Christ reached on an error by the shortstop, and Frelich scored to give Lawrence a 9-8 lead.

The Pointers battled back in the top of the eighth to tie the game on Brad Archambeau’s run-scoring single.

Lawrence grabbed the lead right back in the bottom of the eighth when Phil Wisniewski reached on infield single to start the frame. Wisniewski then scored on Nathan’s two-out single to put Lawrence up 10-9.

The Vikings then sealed the win with a unique double play in the ninth. Sam Spurney was hit by a pitch to start the inning and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a walk put runners at first and second, Kevin Thomas popped up just behind third base.

The infield fly rule was in effect and Thomas was called out. The ball dropped in fair territory, and shortstop Gabe Henriques doubled off pinch-runner Garrett Medenwald at second base to end the game.

Ryan Iverson pitched the eighth and took the loss for the Pointers.

Ripon pulls off doubleheader sweep of Vikings

RIPON, Wis. – The Ripon College got an inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the 12th inning to complete a Midwest Conference doubleheader sweep of Lawrence University on Saturday at Francis Field.

Ripon won the nightcap 18-17 after taking the opener 11-0.

In a wild second game, the teams had 20 hits apiece. Robert Rashid paced Lawrence (6-25, 2-10 MWC) by going 5-for-7 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Tyler Christ went 4-for-6, and Phil Wisniewski drove in four runs.

Kyle Bosquez went 5-for-7 to pace Ripon (17-15, 8-4).

Ripon built leads of 7-0 and 15-10 but Lawrence rallied. The Vikings scored seven times in the top of the ninth to take a 17-15 lead. Wisniewski had a three-run double in the inning, Christ had a run-scoring double and Rashid had a RBI single.

Ripon tied it in the bottom of the ninth with the help of an error and two bunt singles.

The Red Hawks won it in the bottom of the 12th when Bryant Bullock hit a ball down the left field line that ended up under the bench in the Ripon bullpen. Bullock raced around the bases and scored to end the game.

In the opener, Jason Wierschke scattered five hits over seven innings for the shutout. He struck out four and walked four.

Nate Paul went 3-for-4 to pace the Ripon offense, and Nick Whitty drove in three runs. A.J. Nathan picked up a pair of hits for Lawrence.

Vikings drop pair to Ripon

The Ripon College baseball team got a fine pitching performance in the first game of Thursday’s Midwest Conference doubleheader and pulled away late in the second game to record a sweep at Don Hawkins Field.

Ripon won the opener 14-1 and took the nightcap 10-3.

In the first game, Kurt Roeder went the distance and allowed only four hits. He struck out five and walked two.

Nick Whitty went 3-for-3 and drove in six runs to pace Ripon (15-15, 6-4 MWC) in the opener. The Red Hawks collected 15 hits in the contest.

Robert Rashid had two of the four hits for Lawrence (6-23, 2-8).

In the nightcap, Ripon led 3-0 after three innings but the Vikings battled back. Lawrence got a run in the fourth on Alex Brewer’s RBI single, and the Vikings tied it in the sixth on Andy Frelich’s two-run homer.

Bryant Bullock gave Ripon the lead back in the eighth with a two-run homer, and the Red Hawks put the game away with five unearned runs in the ninth.

Bullock, Nate Paul and Taylor Koth all had two hits for Ripon. Phil Wisniewski had a pair of hits for the Vikings.

Freshman pitcher John Revis turned in his finest outing for Lawrence. He allowed only one hit in 4 1/3 innings of relief. He struck out two and walked one.

Beloit takes two from Vikings

BELOIT, Wis. — The Beloit College baseball team swept a Midwest Conference doubleheader by the scores of 13-3 and 11-1 Tuesday at Pohlman Field.

In the opener, Ryan Schmitz, Matt Bartz and Drew Oswald had three hits apiece to pace Beloit’s 15-hit attack. Andrew Edwards went the distance to pick up the win. He allowed four hits, struck out six and walked two.

Beloit (20-9, 8-4 MWC) led 4-3 going to the fourth inning and then broke the game open by scoring three times in the fourth, two more times in the fifth and three times in the sixth.

A.J. Nathan had a pair of hits for Lawrence (6-21, 2-6).

In the nightcap, the Bucs managed only eight hits but parlayed that into 11 runs.

Oswald picked up two hits and was the only Beloit player with more than one hit. Nathan and Phil Wisniewski had two hits apiece for the Vikings. 

Darren Pilcher went five innings and picked up the win for Beloit, which scored three times in the first and pulled away with four more runs in the third.

Vikings drop pair to Beloit

The Beloit College baseball team swept a Midwest Conference doubleheader from Lawrence University on Monday by the scores of 7-1 and 12-2 at Don Hawkins Field.

The Bucs (18-9, 6-4 MWC) got a pair of complete-game performances from pitchers Jordan DeGeorge and Alex Norman.

In the opener, DeGeorge allowed six hits, struck out three and walked two. Andrew Wilt allowed only four hits over seven innings but took the loss for Lawrence (8-19, 2-4).

Beloit got single runs in each of the first three innings and picked up only two hits in that stretch. Lawrence cut the lead to 3-1 on Robert Rashid’s homer in the bottom of the fourth, but that’s all the Vikings would get.

Beloit sealed the win with three runs in the ninth.

In the nightcap, Norman allowed six hits, struck out four and didn’t walk a batter.

The Bucs pounded out 16 hits, with Mike Kovach, Andrew Heer and Rick Chernik collecting three hits apiece.

Jake Johnson allowed nine hits over 5 2/3 inings and took the loss. Rashid and Luke Kostreva had two hits apiece for Lawrence.

Weather concerns force changes to LU softball, baseball schedules

The Lawrence University softball and baseball teams have altered their schedules in anticipation of rain across the state of Wisconsin this weekend.

The Lawrence softball team has postponed its doubleheader at Carroll University on Saturday. The Vikings will now play at Carroll on Wednesday, April 28, at 3 p.m.

The Lawrence baseball team has flipped its two doubleheaders with Beloit College this weekend. Lawrence is now set to play at Beloit at 1 p.m. on Saturday, and the Vikings will host Beloit at Don Hawkins Field at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Lawrence baseball doubles up MSOE

Zach Owsley went 3-for-3 and knocked in a pair of runs and Lawrence University used nine pitchers to record a 6-3 nonconference victory over the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Wednesday at Don Hawkins Field.

Conor Heneghan tossed one inning of scoreless relief to earn his first collegiate victory. The nine Lawrence hurlers threw one inning apiece.

Lawrence (6-17) pounded out 12 hits, and Robert Rashid, Luke Kostreva and Davide Harris had two hits apiece.

The Vikings trailed 2-0 after the top of the first but tied it in the bottom half of the inning. Lawrence had only one hit but took advantage of a wild pitch and an error.

Lawrence took a 3-2 lead in the second when Michael Baldino singled and later scored on Harris’ single. The Vikings made it 4-2 in the third when Owsley doubled and scored on Kostreva’s single.

The Vikings added two more runs in the sixth. Rashid and Owsley both had run-scoring singles in the inning as the Vikings built a 6-3 lead.

MSOE (10-19) cut the lead to 6-3 on Michael Merk’s solo homer in the seventh, but that’s as close as the Raiders would get.

Andy Frelich tossed a scoreless eighth, and Owsley worked a scoreless ninth for his first collegiate save.

Vikings roll to doubleheader sweep of Finlandia

The Lawrence University baseball team routed Finlandia University 11-0 and 15-2 to post a nonconference doubleheader sweep on Saturday at Don Hawkins Field.

The Vikings pounded out 23 hits in the doubleheader and got a pair of fine pitching performances.

In the opener, Andrew Wilt allowed only one hit over five innings to pick up the victory. He struck out seven and walked three.

A.J. Nathan paced the offense by going 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Robert Rashid, Gabe Henriques and Michael Baldino had two hits apiece.

The Vikings (5-17) jumped on Finlandia (4-21) early by scoring three times in the first and three more times in the second. Davide Harris punctuated the second inning with a two-run homer.

Lawrence tacked on another run in the third on Baldino’s RBI double. The Vikings made it 9-0 in the fourth with a pair of runs, getting one on Andy Frelich’s run-scoring single.

The Vikings wrapped up the scoring in the sixth on run-scoring singles from Scoob Ransom and Henriques.

In the nightcap, Jake Johnson picked up his first collegiate victory. He went 5 2/3 innings and allowed three hits while striking out seven and walking three.

Rashid, Phil Wisniewski and Alex Brewer had two hits apiece for Lawrence in the nightcap

The Vikings gave Johnson all the offense he would need early. Lawrence scored twice in the first on a run-scoring single from Zach Owsley and Frelich’s RBI triple.

The Vikings then scored five times in the second on only two hits. Lawrence took advantage of two errors, a walk and a hit batsman.

Lawrence tacked on two more runs in the third and then put the game away with five runs in the fourth. The big blow in the fourth was Rashid’s two-run single.

Tyler Christ’s RBI double in the sixth finished the scoring for the Vikings.

Key hits elude Vikings in loss to MSOE

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Lawrence University baseball team couldn’t come up with key hits on Thursday and dropped a 6-3 nonconference decision to the Milwaukee School of Engineering at Henry Aaron Field.

Lawrence (3-17) pounded out 12 hits but stranded nine runners in the contest. Ben Hansen allowed 10 hits over eight innings but picked up the win. He struck out eight and walked one. Conor Heneghan took the loss.

MSOE (8-16) got three hits from Mike Brunette and he scored three runs. Robert Rashid went 4-for-5 with two runs batted in to pace the Vikings. Rashid, who leads the nation in stolen bases, picked up a pair of steals. Davide Harris went 3-for-4 and scored a pair of runs for Lawrence.

MSOE jumped ahead with four runs on five hits in the second inning. Lawrence cut the lead in half with a pair of runs in the top half of the third. Rashid and Luke Kostreva both had run-scoring singles in the inning.

Lawrence, which stranded at least one runner in every inning but the first and eighth, added another run in the ninth on Rashid’s run-scoring single.

The Vikings got a solid relief performance from freshman Sam Ausloos, who pitched three innings of scoreless relief. He allowed one hit, struck out two and walked one.
