Lawrence student-athletes receive awards at Honors Celebration

APPLETON, Wis. — Sixteen Lawrence University student-athletes were recently honored at the 2014 Honors Celebration.

The awards and winners are as follows.

The Ruth Bateman Award is given for excellence in scholarship, athletic ability and leadership by a female athlete. Junior Taylor Winter (Bayside, Wis./Nicolet) won the award after completing another stellar season. Winter won the 1,650-yard freestyle and 500 freestyle at the 2014 Midwest Conference Championships and also took the 1,650 title in the Wisconsin Private College Championships. A three-time MWC champion, Winter also holds the school records in both the 1,000 and 1,650 freestyle.

The Iden Charles Champion Cup is given for excellence in scholarship, athletic ability, college spirit and loyalty. Junior Andrew Borresen (West Bend, Wis./Living Word Lutheran) is a reserve on the men’s basketball team and deeply involved in campus life. A member of the Dean’s List and Mortar Board, Borresen has a 3.89 grade point average and is majoring in history. Borresen is set to capture his third consecutive Academic All-Midwest Conference selection. The co-chairman of Lawrence’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Borresen also works in the Lawrence’s sports information office and for the Lawrentian, the student newspaper.

The Outstanding Freshman Athletic Award for Men is given the freshman man who has made the most outstanding contribution to Lawrence athletics. Blake Roubos (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Michael’s) won the award after lettering in two sports during his rookie year at Lawrence. A hockey and tennis standout, Roubos was named to the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association all-freshmen team and was named a NCHA Player of the Week during the season. Roubos led the team in scoring with 26 points on a team-best 16 assists and 10 goals. Roubos recorded his first career hat trick and the first hat trick for a Lawrence player since the 2009-10 season when he scored three times in a 4-2 win over Finlandia University that clinched a berth in the NCHA playoffs. Roubos had a season-best five points and a season-high three assists to go with two goals in Lawrence’s 6-6 nonconference tie with Gustavus Adolphus College early in the season. Roubos was a starter at No. 3 doubles and played matches at No. 6 singles for tennis team. Roubos and Sam Wiener won the consolation title at No. 3 doubles at the Midwest Conference Championships.

The Outstanding Freshman Athletic Award for Women is given to the freshman woman who has made the most outstanding contribution to Lawrence athletics. Amy Hutchings (Ripon, Wis./Ripon) earned the award after earning letters in both cross country and track and field. During the cross country season, Hutchings finished ninth at the Midwest Conference Championships to earn all-conference honors. Hutchings, who is one of just three women in Lawrence history to finish in the conference’s top 10 as a freshman, led Lawrence to a third-place finish at the league meet. Hutchings also competed in multiple distance events in both indoor and outdoor track.

The Ralph V. Landis Award was established by the Lettermen of Lawrence in honor of Dr. Landis, physician to Lawrence students from 1926-78, and is awarded for outstanding contributions to Lawrence athletics by a senior male athlete. Luke Barthelmess (Appleton, Wis./Principia) completed a record-setting career at quarterback for the Lawrence football team. A 2013 All-Midwest Conference selection, Barthelmess completed 193 of 346 passes for 2,133 yards and 14 touchdowns. He finished second in the league at 213.3 passing yards per game. Barthelmess also ran 177 times for 889 yards and two touchdowns. Barthelmess, who averaged 5.0 yards per carry, finished eighth in the conference at 88.9 yards per game. Barthelmess also finished first in the league in total offense at 302.2 yards per game. Barthelmess, who is Lawrence’s career leader in a number of passing categories, completed 648 of 1,181 passes in his career. He threw for a record 8,190 yards and a record 62 touchdown passes. Barthelmess, who was named the MVP at the Bowl of the Stars in Mexico, is the starting quarterback for the Stuttgart Scorpions of the German Football League.

The Charles E. Pond Award for Men is given for all-around athletic ability by a senior man in two or more sports and for sportsmanship, school spirit and scholarship. Dan Thoresen (Verona, Wis./Verona) earned the award after completing a stellar career in cross country and track and field. Thoresen earned All-Midwest Conference honors four times in track and field and was a member of Lawrence’s 2011 conference championship cross country squad. A biology major, Thoresen has a 3.935 grade point average in biology.

The Marion Read Award is given for outstanding contributions to Lawrence athletics. The award had two winners this year as seniors Mary Diduch (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) and Hannah Gabriel (Elmhurst, Ill./York) shared the award. Diduch won four letters in softball and was part of the 2014 and 2014 squads that reached the Midwest Conference Tournament. Diduch also worked as a student manager for the football team and served in a leadership position with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Gabriel was a two-time Midwest Conference champion, taking the title twice in the 200-yard freestyle and setting a meet record in the event. Gabriel also holds the school record in the 200 freestyle and is part of record-holding teams in the 400 medley relay, 400 freestyle relay and 800 freestyle relay.

The Letterwinner Award is presented by the L Club to those outstanding seniors who have earned eight or more letters. The winners are:

Hoops star Siebert named to all-region team

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University men’s basketball standout Chris Siebert has been named to the D3hoops.com All-Midwest Region team.

Siebert (Baraboo,Wis./Baraboo), a senior guard, was chosen for the third team. Siebert, who was selected for the all-region team for the first time, averaged 17.9 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game for the Vikings.

Siebert shot 46.8 percent from the floor, including 46.2 percent from 3-point range. Siebert made 72 3-pointers on the season, which ranks second in school history to the 75 John Dekker made in 2009-10. Siebert also shot 81.7 percent from the foul line.

Siebert finished a stellar career fourth in scoring at Lawrence with 1,360 points. He trails only All-American Chris Braier, Lawrence Hall of Famer Joel Dillingham and All-American Ryan Kroeger.

Siebert, who is the 10th player in Lawrence history to be named to the All-Midwest Conference team three times, is the Vikings’ first all-region selection since Kroeger in 2008-09. Both Kroeger and Braier earned multiple all-region honors in the last decade.

Siebert was one of four players from the Midwest Conference to earn all-region honors. St. Norbert College’s Brandon Gries and Kam Cerroni were named to the first and second teams, respectively, and Grinnell College’s Jack Taylor was chosen for the third team. Ripon College’s Ty Sabin was named the region’s Rookie of the Year.

Siebert earns All-MWC honors for third time

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University men’s basketball star Chris Siebert has been named to the All-Midwest Conference team for the third consecutive year.

A senior guard, Siebert (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) was a first-team selection this season after earning second-team honors for both the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons. Siebert averaged 17.9 points and 4.0 rebounds per game for the Vikings.

Siebert ranked seventh in the league in points per game and was among the leaders in a number of other categories. He ranked fourth with 3.1 3-pointers made per game and was fifth in 3-point shooting at 46.2 percent. Siebert finished 12th in field goal percentage at 46.8, 12th in free throw percentage at 81.7 and 13th at 2.9 assists per game.

Siebert made 72 3-pointers on the season, which ranks second in school history to the 75 John Dekker made in 2009-10.

Siebert finished a stellar career fourth in scoring at Lawrence with 1,360 points. He trails only All-American Chris Braier, Lawrence Hall of Famer Joel Dillingham and All-American Ryan Kroeger. Siebert also is the 10th player in Lawrence history to earn all-conference honors at least three times.

Lawrence finished fifth in the conference with a 10-8 record, and the Vikings had a 12-11 overall mark.

Grinnell tops Lawrence in season finale

GRINNELL, Iowa — The Grinnell College men’s basketball team built a double-digit lead early in the second half and kept Lawrence University at arm’s length for the rest of the game in a 122-111 Midwest Conference victory on Saturday at Darby Gymnasium.

Lawrence (12-11, 10-8 MWC), which wrapped up its season by winning four of its last five games, was led by Ryan DePouw’s game-high 26 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. Tyler Mazur added 24 points for the Vikings on the strength of hitting 5-for-9 from 3-point range. Chase Nelson had a double-double for the Vikings with 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Jamie Nikitas added 18 points for Lawrence, which played without a key component in starting point guard Brian Gryszkiewicz, who was out due to injury. Chris Seibert added 17 points and a team-high eight assists for the Vikings.

Grinnell’s Patrick Maher tied for game-high honors with 26 points, and he handed out 10 assists. Jack Taylor, the nation’s leading scorer, had 24 points for the Pioneers but shot only 13-for-40 from the floor in two games against Lawrence this season.

Lawrence scored the final five points of the first half, including a 3-pointer from Mazur, and trailed 68-62 at the half. A pair of Taylor free throws gave Grinnell a 79-68 lead with 16:46 remaining, and the Pioneers maintained that advantage throughout the rest of the game.

Grinnell led by as many as 17 later in the game, and Lawrence never got closer than nine points at the five-minute mark.

Siebert leads Lawrence past Lake Forest

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University men’s basketball team held off several second-half challenges and went on to an 84-76 Midwest Conference win over Lake Forest College on Wednesday.

Despite the win, Lawrence (12-10, 10-7 MWC) was eliminated from contention for a Midwest Conference Tournament berth after Carroll University and Grinnell College both won on Wednesday.

Senior guard Chris Siebert scored 22 points and moved into fourth place on Lawrence’s career scoring list. Siebert now has 1,343 points, one better than Doug Fyfe, who starred for the Vikings from 1972-76.

Jamie Nikitas added 18 points and a game-high seven rebounds for Lawrence, and Ryan DePouw had 12 points, a game-high six assists and five rebounds. Chase Nelson chipped in with 12 points and Trace Sonnleitner had 10.

James Stack paced Lake Forest (7-15, 6-11) with 22 points, including nine in the final 43 seconds.

Lawrence trailed by two at the half, but the Vikings went on an 11-1 run early in the half to take a 52-41 lead. Siebert, Sonnleitner and Troy Miller all hit 3-pointers during that stretch.

Lake Forest trimmed the margin back to three points at 52-49, but the Vikings countered with a 12-4 run, capped by Nikitas’ three-point play, for a 64-53 edge with 5:25 left.

The Foresters immediately came back to cut the lead to 66-61 on Andrew Toth’s 3-pointer with 4:12 remaining. DePouw then hit a driving layup and Max Burgess buried a 3-pointer and Lawrence led 71-61 with 2:20 left.

The Vikings then made 11-of-12 free throws in the final 1:30 to seal the victory.

Lawrence wraps up its season on Saturday when it travels to Grinnell College.

DePouw’s big week garners MWC Player of the Week honor

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University men’s basketball star Ryan DePouw has been named the Midwest Conference Player of the Week.

DePouw (Oconto, Wis./Oconto), a junior forward, averaged 24 points and eight rebounds per game as Lawrence won a pair of games this past week. DePouw shot 65.2 percent (15-23) from the floor, including 57.1 percent (4-7) from 3-point range, and 93.3 percent (14-15) from the foul line in the two games.

DePouw scored a career-high 27 points in Lawrence’s 77-68 win over Cornell College on Saturday and posted a double-double with 12 rebounds. He also picked up three assists, two blocks and a steal. DePouw was two points better than his previous career high, which was 25 points at Illinois College on Nov. 25, 2012.

DePouw scored 21 points, grabbed four rebounds, handed out five assists and picked up three steals in Lawrence’s 97-83 win at Beloit College this past Wednesday. DePouw also picked up five assists and three steal against the Bucs.

DePouw, who was honored as the Player of the Week for the first time in his career, is averaging 15.3 points and 4.8 rebounds this season while shooting 53.4 percent from the floor and 81.9 percent from the foul line.

The two victories kept Lawrence’s hopes for a berth in the four-team Midwest Conference Tournament alive. Lawrence is in fifth place, one game behind Carroll University, with two games left to play.

DePouw’s big game leads Lawrence past Cornell

APPLETON, Wis. — Ryan DePouw had a huge game to lead the Lawrence University men’s basketball team to a 77-68 Midwest Conference victory over Cornell College on Saturday at Alexander Gymnasium.

DePouw poured in a career-high 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to go along with three assists, two blocks and a steal. DePouw went 9-for-14 from the floor, including 2-for-3 on 3-pointers, and knocked down 7-of-8 free throws.

Jamie Nikitas added 14 points for the Vikings (11-10, 9-7 MWC), and Chris Siebert had 10 points.

Reggie Greenwood scored 26 points to pace Cornell (8-13, 5-11) but needed 21 shots to do it. Nick Bobb had a double-double for the Rams with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Lawrence also kept alive its hopes for a Midwest Conference Tournament berth. The Vikings are a game behind Carroll University for fourth place with two games left to play.

The Vikings built a double-digit lead late in the first half courtesy of a 12-4 scoring run. DePouw scored seven points and Trace Sonnleitner added the other five in that stretch to give Lawrence a 39-29 lead with 2:02 left in the opening half. The Vikings went on to lead 45-34 at the break.

Lawrence built the lead to 16 points with 13 minutes left but couldn’t put the Rams away. Cornell trailed 68-54 when it scored the game’s next 11 points to cut the margin to 68-65 with 2:55 left.

DePouw’s layup with 2:09 left gave Lawrence a 70-65 edge, and the Rams then had a turnover and a pair of missed jumpers. Nikitas then hit a free throw with 57 seconds left to give Lawrence a 71-65 lead, but Greenwood hit a 3-pointer with 46 seconds remaining to cut the margin to 71-68.

The Vikings then hit six consecutive free throws, including four by DePouw, to seal the victory as Cornell missed its next three 3-point attempts.

Lawrence wraps up the home portion of the regular season on Wednesday when it hosts Lake Forest College.
