UW-La Crosse shuts out Vikings

APPLETON, Wis. — The UW-La Crosse women’s tennis team posted a 9-0 win over Lawrence University on Friday in the season opener for both squads.

Lawrence tennis teams honored by ITA for academic achievement

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University women’s and men’s tennis teams and 15 student-athletes have been honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

The Vikings earned the ITA All-Academic Team award after the women posted a 3.64 cumulative grade point average and the men had a 3.49 GPA. A team needed a GPA of at least 3.20 for the 2014-15 academic year to be eligible for the award.

Eight members of the women’s team were named ITA Scholar-Athletes after posting a grade point average of at least 3.50. Seven of the men’s players earned the Scholar-Athlete designation as well.

Leading the way for the Lawrence women were seniors Melissa Heeren (Wausau, Wis./East), Allison Juda (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and Tess Vogel (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug), who all posted perfect 4.0 GPAs for the 2014-15 academic year.

Senior Elena Watson (Sunbury, Ohio/Big Walnut), junior Ali Heiring (Wayzata, Minn./Wayzata), sophomores Katie Frankel (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) and Cathryn Wood (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba) and freshman Lindsay Holsen (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc) all earned the Scholar-Athlete award.

On the men’s side, juniors Adam Busch (Hales Corners, Wis./Greendale Martin Luther), Brian DeCorte (Southampton, Pa./William Tennent), Mitch Kasprzyk (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) and Ethan Perushek (Maple Grove, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret’s), sophomore David Jumes (Appleton, Wis./Xavier) and freshmen Sotaro Kurahashi (Tokyo, Japan/Waseda University) and Ben Tomhave (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet) all earned the Scholar-Athlete award.

Busch posted the highest GPA among the men at 3.81, and Perushek was at 3.75.

Lawrence tennis had 16 student-athletes also earn Academic All-Midwest Conference honors.

The Lawrence women finished the 2014-15 season with an 8-8 record in dual matches and finished fifth in the Midwest Conference. The men were 10-14 and also finished fifth in the conference.

More than 150 Lawrence student-athletes named to Academic All-MWC team

APPLETON, Wis. — More than 150 Lawrence University student-athletes have been named to the Academic All-Midwest Conference team.

Lawrence had 153 student-athletes meet the minimum grade point average of 3.33 during the 2014-15 academic year. The top team for the Vikings was women’s indoor track, which had 17 student-athletes honored. Other top performing teams were women’s cross country and women’s soccer with 13 selections apiece, women’s swimming and diving with 12 and men’s soccer and women’s outdoor track with 11 apiece.

A total of 1,859 student-athletes were selected across the conference, and that surpasses the total of 1,752 honored during the 2013-14 academic year.

Eagles top Lawrence

MADISON, Wis. — The Edgewood College women’s tennis team defeated Lawrence University 7-2 in a nonconference match on Friday.

Edgewood (14-6) took two of the three doubles matches and then dropped just one of the six singles contests.

Lawrence (8-8) got an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles from Katie Frankel and Lindsay Holsen. Tess Vogel was the lone singles winner as she posted a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5.

Heeren grabs second to lead Vikings at MWC Championships

MADISON, Wis. — Melissa Heeren took second place at No. 6 singles on Sunday to lead the Lawrence University women’s tennis team at the Midwest Conference Championships.

Playing at Nielsen Tennis Stadium, Heeren fell in three sets to St. Norbert College’s Ashley Randazzo in the championship match. Randazzo won 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.

Heeren advanced to the title match with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Emily Raben of Lake Forest College in the quarterfinals and a 6-0, 6-1 win over Sam Hoyord of Carroll University.

Tess Vogel advanced to the championship semifinals at No. 5 singles with an impressive 6-0, 6-0 win over Monmouth College’s Cheyenne Groat before falling 6-3, 6-2 to eventual champion Anna Gosz of St. Norbert.

Both Lindsay Holsen (No. 3) and Allison Juda (No. 4) made it to the championship quarterfinals before being eliminated.

Both Hannah Geoffrey (No. 1) and Katie Frankel (No. 2) won the consolation titles. Frankel lost in the championship quarterfinals and then rolled through the consolation bracket. She beat Alex Kurpiel of Beloit College 8-1 in the consolation final. Geoffrey lost in the opening round but also rolled through to the consolation final, where she defeated Ripon College’s Maddie VandenHouten 8-1.

Heeren, Vogel pace doubles teams at opening day of MWC Championships

MADISON, Wis. — Melissa Heeren and Tess Vogel advanced to the championship semifinals at No. 3 doubles to lead the Lawrence University women’s tennis team on Saturday at the Midwest Conference Championships.

Heeren and Vogel received a bye in the opening round and then posted an 8-0 win over Monmouth College in the quarterfinals at Nielsen Tennis Stadium. The Lawrence duo was then eliminated after an 8-5 loss to the eventual champions from St. Norbert College.

At No. 2 doubles, the Lawrence team of Ali Heiring and Lindsay Holsen took the consolation championship. After a loss in the championship quarterfinals to Lake Forest College, Heiring and Holsen stormed back to record 8-1 wins over Knox College and Beloit College for the consolation title.

The No. 1 doubles team of Katie Frankel and Hannah Geoffrey started with an 8-3 victory over Illinois College in the opening round but were eliminated with an 8-6 loss to Lake Forest College in the quarterfinals.

 

Lawrence rolls to shutout of Fighting Scots

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University women’s tennis team rolled to a 9-0 shutout of Monmouth College in a Midwest Conference match on Saturday at the Lawrence Courts.

The Vikings started the day by sweeping the doubles matches in impressive fashion. Hannah Geoffrey and Katie Frankel led the way with an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles.

The Vikings didn’t drop a set during the six singles matches, and Frankel (No. 2), Tess Vogel (No. 5) and Elana Lambert (No. 6) all posted 6-0, 6-0 victories.

Vikings hammer Knox 9-0

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University women’s tennis team routed Knox College 9-0 in a Midwest Conference match on Saturday at the Lawrence Courts.

Lawrence (8-7, 5-4 MWC) dropped only two games in doubles and just didn’t lose a set in rolling to a sweep of the singles matches.

Tess Vogel and Melissa Heeren led the way in doubles with an 8-0 victory at No. 2. Both Hannah Geoffrey and Katie Frankel at No. 1 and Allison Juda and Cathryn Wood at No. 3 were 8-1 winners.

Geoffrey (No. 1), Frankel (No. 2), Lindsay Holsen (No. 3), Vogel (No. 4), Ali Heiring (No. 5) and Elana Lambert (No. 6) all won in straight sets in singles. Frankel rolled to an impressive 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 2. Both Holsen and Vogel lost just one game in their matches.

Women’s tennis match vs. Illinois College canceled

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University vs. Illinois College women’s tennis match scheduled for Sunday has been canceled.

Illinois College, which was scheduled to play at Ripon College and St. Norbert College as well this weekend, isn’t able to field a team for the three matches this weekend.

Lawrence will be awarded a 9-0 victory for the purposes of the Midwest Conference standings, but officially it is counted as a “no contest.”

Lawrence will play two matches on Saturday at the Lawrence Courts. The Vikings face Knox College at 9 a.m. and Monmouth College at 3 p.m.

 

Vikings edge UW-Stevens Point 5-4

APPLETON, Wis. — Tess Vogel rallied to win at No. 5 singles to lift the Lawrence University women’s tennis team to a 5-4 nonconference win over UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday at the Lawrence Courts.

Vogel dropped the opening set to Erin Lemmer but came back to win the second set 7-5 and tie the match. Vogel then won the super tiebreaker 10-8 to clinch the victory for the Vikings (6-7).

Lawrence started the match with a pair of doubles victories as Hannah Geoffrey and Katie Frankel won at No. 1 and Lindsay Holsen and Ali Heiring won at No. 2.

Frankel then rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles and Holsen posted a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles to put the Vikings on the brink of victory. Vogel’s hard-fought win at No. 5 then clinched the victory over the Pointers (4-7).
