Late goals lift Lawrence past Spartans

AURORA, Ill. — The Lawrence University women’s soccer team scored twice in a span of a less than three minutes to rally for a 2-1 nonconference victory Sunday over Aurora University.

The Vikings trailed 1-0 when Mallory Koula scored at 71:38 off an assist from Sarah Ehlinger. Ehlinger then scored an unassisted goal at 73:13 to give the Vikings the lead for good.

Cassie Burke made eight saves to pick up her first win in goal for the Vikings.

Larson, Vikings roll to win over Foresters

The Lawrence University women’s tennis team downed Lake Forest College 7-2 in a nonconference match on Sunday at the Lawrence Courts.

Lawrence’s No. 1 singles player, Beth Larson, had the most impressive win of the day as she knocked off defending Midwest Conference No. 1 singles champion Melika Celebic 6-0, 7-6 (8-6).

The Vikings got the day started on a good note by sweeping the doubles matches. In addition to Larson’s victory, Jennifer Roesch won at No. 2 singles, Carla Schmidt was a winner at No. 4 and Kat Valde won at No. 5.

St. Scholastica rallies to down Lawrence in season opener

DULUTH, Minn. — The College of St. Scholastica football team rallied to down Lawrence University 31-24 in a nonconference game Saturday at Public Schools Stadium.

Matthew Johnson scored two touchdowns in a span of 3:26 in the fourth quarter to give St. Scholastica the lead for good.

Travis Newohig ran 15 times for 131 yards to pace the Saints (1-0). Alex Thiry completed 10 of 17 passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns for St. Scholastica.

Freshman Sam Wagner had a big game for the Vikings (0-1). He returned a kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass in the third quarter.

It was Wagner who gave Lawrence its first lead of the contest after St. Scholastica kicked a 35-yard field goal early in the first quarter. Wagner took the ensuing kickoff and went 88 yards for the score and the Vikings led 7-3.

Tyler Mazur then capped a nine-play, 52-yard drive with a two-yard scoring run to put Lawrence up 14-3.

The Saints then blocked Mazur’s punt on the next possession and returned it 17 yards for a touchdown to cut the lead to 14-10. Cody Robel connected on a 39-yard field goal to give Lawrence a 17-10 lead at the half.

Jonny Bennett caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from Thiry midway through the third quarter to tie the game at 17-17.

Freshman Mason Garcia returned the ensuing kickoff 52 yards to give Lawrence a first down at the St. Scholastica 31. Luke Barthelmess connected with Wagner six plays later on a 21-yard scoring pass to give Lawrence a 24-17 lead.

Johnson then caught a 19-yard pass from Thiry with 9:08 left in the game to tie the score at 24-24.

After Lawrence went three-and-out on its next possession, the Saints moved 56 yards in four plays to take the lead for good. Johnson scored on a run from five yards out to put the Saints up 31-24.

Lawrence got the ball two more times after that but was unable to score.

Vikings sweep individual, team honors at St. Norbert Invitational

GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Lawrence University men’s cross country team won the title at the St. Norbert College Tom Barry Invitational on Saturday, and freshman Curran Carlile was the top collegiate finisher in his first race for the Vikings.

Carlile, a freshman from Portland, Ore., covered the four-mile course at Colburn Park in 20 minutes, 50.1 seconds. Lawrence sophomore Sam Stevens, a Suamico, Wis., native running in his backyard, finished right behind Carlile at 20:55.1 to complete a 1-2 sweep for the Vikings.

Lawrence tied for the team title with 66 points with St. Norbert and Ripon College. It was the first men’s invitational team title since the Vikings won the Northland Baptist Bible College Invitational in 2001. That meet also marked the last time a Lawrence men’s runner won a race as well.

On the women’s side, junior Emily Muhs paced the Vikings by taking fifth place in 19:25.2 on the 5,000-meter course. Led by Muhs, the Vikings placed seventh in the team standings.

Vikings top Principia, fall to Dominican on opening day of Star Classic

RIVER FOREST, Ill. — The Lawrence University volleyball team split a pair of matches on Friday at the Dominican University Star Classic.

The Vikings opened with a 3-1 loss to Dominican, but Lawrence rebounded to beat Principia College 3-1 to improve to 1-3 on the season.

Vikings pummel Marian 9-0

FOND DU LAC, Wis. — The Lawrence University women’s tennis team rolled to a 9-0 nonconference victory at Marian University on Friday.

Top singles player Beth Larson led the charge for Lawrence by posting a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Michelle Zwicky. The Vikings didn’t drop a set, and Kat Valde also posted a 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5.
