Bruning, Janusiak grab thirds at UW-La Crosse Qualifier

LA CROSSE, Wis. — Clare Bruning and Josh Janusiak both grabbed third-place finishes Thursday at the NCAA Qualifier at UW-La Crosse.

Bruning raced to third place in the 5,000 meters in 19:19.51. Teammate Hannah Kinzer grabbed fifth place with a time of 19:28.55.

In the men’s 5,000, it was Janusiak in third with a time of 15:31.55. Senior Jordan Atkins posted a seventh-place finish with a time of 16:09.05.

BLU Crew award winners to be selected Friday

APPLETON, Wis. — The first BLU Crew Awards will be selected Friday evening at the Warch Campus Center.

The inaugural event is sponsored by Lawrence University’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). SAAC will hand out 12 awards to its fellow Vikings and announce the All-Viking Team.

The event begins at 7 p.m. and is open to the public.

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University softball stars Meg Krautsch and Tierney Duffy have been selected for the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Great Lakes Region team.

Both Duffy (North Riverside, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield) and Krautsch (Oshkosh, Wis./West) were chosen for the second team.

Duffy, a senior outfielder, hit a career-high .418 for the season, and that ranked second in the Midwest Conference. She posted a .457 on-base percentage, scored 27 runs and swiped 20 bases in 23 tries. Duffy posted 10 multi-hit games, including three three-hit games.

Krautsch, a sophomore shortstop, hit a career-high .405 with seven doubles, one triple, two homers and a team-best 30 runs batted in despite being limited to just 24 games due to injury. Krautsch missed the final 10 games of the season.

Krautsch was a consistent force at the plate throughout the season, collecting at least one hit in 17 of 24 games. She went a season-best 4-for-4 against Kalamazoo College and drove in a season-high five runs against Rockford University.

Krautsch also was superb in the field as she committed just two errors for a stellar .980 fielding percentage.

This marks the ninth consecutive year Lawrence has had at least one all-region selection and the 19th time in the past 20 years.

Lawrence finished with an 18-14-2 overall record and an 11-8-1 mark in Midwest Conference play.

Cardinal, Gniot lead Vikings at MWC Championships

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa — Hayley Cardinal and Ethan Gniot paced the Lawrence University track teams at the Midwest Conference Championships Saturday at Cornell College.

Both Cardinal and Gniot claimed sixth-place finishes in the final day of the meet at Ash Park.

Cardinal took sixth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:11.23. Janey Degan placed eighth in the pole vault for the Vikings with a height of 8 feet, 0.5 inches. Degnan also ran with Cardinal, Erin Schrobilgen and Amy Hutchings on the 4×400 relay team that took seventh in 4:20.77.

The Lawrence women finished 10th in the team standings with six points. St. Norbert won the team title with 236.

Gniot led the Lawrence men by taking sixth in the 800 meters in 1:59.62. Josh Janusiak, coming off a second-place finish in the 10,000 on Friday, took seventh in the 5,000 in 15:56.42.

The Lawrence men finished ninth with 20 points. Monmouth won the team title with 193.

Janusiak’s runner-up finish paces Vikings on opening day of MWC Championships

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa — Josh Janusiak’s grabbed second place in the 10,000 meters Friday to pace the Lawrence University track teams on the opening day of the Midwest Conference Championships.

Running at Ash Park at Cornell College, Janusiak, a freshman from South Milwaukee, Wis., raced to second place in 33:03.62. Grinnell’s Adam Dalton won the event in 32:46.06. Lawrence’s other rookie runner in the race, Ben Schaefer, took seventh in 33:54.11.

The Vikings had two other placewinners on the day, as senior Cam Davies took seventh in the 1,500 in 4:08.37 and Wautoma native Wes Hetcher was seventh in the pole vault at 12 feet, 5.5 inches.

The bulk of the competition takes place on Saturday.

Holliday, Spencer named to all-conference baseball team

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University baseball standouts Matt Holliday and Nolan Spencer have been selected for the All-Midwest Conference team in a vote of league coaches.

Holliday (Hong Kong/International) and Spencer (Elmhurst, Ill./York) were both chosen for the North Division team.

Holliday, a sophomore, was chosen for the team for the second consecutive year. An infielder and pitcher, Holliday hit .412 on the season with seven doubles, one triple, two homers and 17 runs batted in in 27 games. He missed the final nine games of the season due to injury. Holliday also posted a 4-1 record with 3.56 earned run average in 30.1 innings. He struck out 12 and walked 10.

In conference play, Holliday hit .410 with two doubles a homer and five runs batted in. He went 2-0 on the mound with a 3.38 earned run average.

Spencer put together an impressive rookie season while starting every game at shortstop with the exception of five games missed due to injury.

Spencer hit a team-high .413 on the season with three doubles, two triples, 21 runs scored, 15 RBIs and 16 stolen bases. Spencer is the first Lawrence freshman to lead the team in hitting and bat .400 since Chris LeFever hit .400 in 1990.

In conference play, Spencer hit .379 with one double, scored seven runs and seven driven in. He also was a standout at shortstop and posted a .962 fielding percentage in league play.

This marks the second consecutive season Lawrence has had a freshman receive all-conference honors with Holliday making the North Division team in 2015. Lawrence is the only team in the league to have a first-year player honored the past two seasons.

Lawrence finished with an 11-25 overall record and finished fifth in the North Division.

Duffy earns all-conference honors for Lawrence softball

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University softball standout Tierney Duffy was the Vikings’ lone selection to the All-Midwest Conference team in a vote of league coaches.

Duffy (North Riverside, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield), a senior outfielder, was a second-team selection.

Duffy hit .418 for the season, and that ranked second in the Midwest Conference. She posted a .457 on-base percentage, scored 27 runs and swiped 20 bases in 23 tries.

During conference play, Duffy hit .377 and tied for the team high with 17 runs scored while batting in the No. 9 spot in the order. She went 11-for-12 on stolen bases during 20 conference games. Duffy also posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in league play.

Lawrence finished the season with an 18-14-2 record and an 11-8-1 mark in Midwest Conference play.

Duex carries the load, Vikings rally for split at Carroll

WAUKESHA, Wis. — The Lawrence University baseball team went into Saturday’s final Midwest Conference doubleheader of the season knowing it was desperately short on pitching.

Enter Kyle Duex.

The sophomore threw the first 13 innings of the day, and Lawrence rallied for a split with the Pioneers. Carroll (17-19, 6-10 MWC) won the opener 3-2, and the Vikings took the nightcap 11-8 at Frame Park.

Duex went the distance in the first game and allowed just one earned run on seven hits but lost the pitcher’s duel to Carroll’s Carl Formento.

Lawrence got a run in the third on Dan Rothbauer’s run-scoring double, added a run on Cole Erickson’s RBI double in the eighth but couldn’t push across the tying run in the ninth.

Rothbauer finished 3-for-4, and Nolan Spencer was 3-for-5 for the Vikings (11-25, 5-11). Erickson and Travis Weber with both 2-for-4 with a double, and Dante Reese collected a pair of hits.

Duex started the second game and allowed seven hits and four runs over five innings. He exited with the Vikings ahead 6-4, but Carroll rallied for two runs in the eighth to take an 8-7 lead.

Weber led off the ninth with a solo homer to tie it at 8-8. Brandon Klar drew a walk and scored on Zach Rabideau’s single for a 9-8 edge. After Carl Olsen singled, Erickson tripled to score two and put Lawrence up 11-8.

Rabideau, who entered in relief in the sixth, worked around a hit batsman in the ninth to secure the win. Rabideau also went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.

Olsen was 3-for-3 with a double and scored four runs, and Spencer went 3-for-6. Both Erickson and Weber finished 2-for-4.

Lawrence wins multiple events at Viking Invitational

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University track teams won multiple events at Saturday’s Viking Invitational at Whiting Field.

The most exciting victory for the Vikings came in the women’s 4×400-meter relay. Running the anchor leg, Lawrence’s Amy Hutchings made up about 20 meters and overtook the St. Norbert College team to take first place in 4:26.40.

Hayley Cardinal also was a winner for the Vikings as she took first in the 400 hurdles in 1:07.11.

Lawrence’s Dan Sandacz took first in the 400 hurdles on the men’s side in 59.29 seconds. Sandacz also grabbed second in the 110 hurdles in 16.64 seconds.

Lawrence swept the top two spots in the men’s 5,000. Max Edwards took first for the Vikings in 16:23.96, and Ben Schaefer was second in 16:31.96.

Teddy Kortenhof grabbed the top spot in the 3,000 steeplechase in 10:40.51, and Wes Hetcher took first in the pole vault with a height of 12 feet 7.5 inches.

St. Norbert took both of the team titles, with the women scoring 119 points and the men had 80. The Lawrence women were second with 27, and the Lawrence men were third with 46.

Carroll takes two from Vikings

APPLETON, Wis. — The Carroll University baseball team collected 31 hits and benefited from 22 walks to sweep a Midwest Conference doubleheader from Lawrence University on Friday at Whiting Field.

Carroll won the opener 21-9 in seven innings and rallied to win 18-8 in eight innings in the nightcap.

In the first game, Carroll (16-18, 5-9 MWC) pounded out 19 hits against three Lawrence pitchers. Hunter Frey went 3-for-5 with two home runs and drove in six to pace the Pioneers.

Alex Morland went 5.2 innings and allowed four runs in five hits to pick up the win. Dan Rothbauer started and went 3.1 innings and took the loss for Lawrence (10-24, 4-10).

Carroll led 6-0 when it broke the wide open with six runs in the fifth, five more in the sixth and four in the seventh.

Travis Weber went 2-for-4 with two doubles and drove in two runs for the Vikings, and Anthony Ortiz also collected a pair of hits.

In the second game, Lawrence built a 6-1 lead through four innings when the Carroll offense caught fire. The Pioneers, who turned a triple play with the bases loaded to end the Lawrence fourth, scored three in the fifth and three in the sixth to grab a 7-6 lead.

Lawrence battled back to take an 8-7 lead in the bottom of the sixth, but Carroll scored six times in the seventh and five more times in the eighth. Brady Durni went 3-for-3, scored three runs and drove in four for Carroll.

Andrew Lauber went 3-for-4 with a double, and Weber was 2-for-4 with a double and three runs batted in for the Vikings. Nolan Spencer collected a pair of hits and scored two runs, and Brandon Klar reached base four times and scored four runs.

Danny Arden worked one inning in relief to get the win. Craig Batchelor also worked one inning and allowed six runs, all unearned, to take the loss.
