I hope you’ve been over to the library and noticed some of the fancy news screens developed by our fabulous circulation staff. If not — or even if you have, and you want to relive the magic — here’s a Flickr slideshow of some of our greatest hits…
Public Art resource guide
If you attended the recent Summer Seminar on Public Art: Process and History — or even if you’re just interested in the topic — your friends at the Mudd have developed a handy Public Art resource guide.
Lots of useful links to images, public art resources, books, and articles.
Canine Therapy: The Poem
The Mudd’s June 7 Canine Therapy session inspired a poem! It captures pretty well what the event is all about. Thanks to the author for letting us post it here.
Canine Therapy
Sarah Gilbert
Finals week, spring term
Outside the college library
seven dogs work for treats
for attention, for long belly scratches.
Clumps of students come
weighed down by deadlines
pet their stresses, their fears
into forgiving fur, floppy ears
smile into shining eager eyes.
Boundless willing doggie hearts
radiate love and hope back to them
and the students walk away lighter,
laughing together.
Home again the therapists
sleep long and deeply
twitching with dreams
of MLA citation style
cell apoptosis
surrealist self-representation
and diminished 7th chords,
then wake and shake, stretch,
and go look for more treats.
More canine fun
Another fun-filled Canine Therapy event occurred on Monday, June 7 at the Mudd. Seven dogs and several dozen students bonded, romped, and relaxed during Finals week at Lawrence.
One happy student: “I love this event! Love it! Love it! Love it!”
One happy dog: “Woof!”
Enjoy these photos from the event on Flickr!
Finals stress relief is a warm puppy…
Stop by for some Canine Therapy! Friendly dogs will be outside the front doors of the Mudd on Monday, June 7, from noon to 1pm. Stop by, pet a dog, take a deep breath, and relax!
Check out some photos from last year’s event. As you can see, a good time was had by all…
Be careful out there…
A recent article in the Post Crescent noted that “the Appleton Police Department is using grant money to concentrate on bike and pedestrian safety in the downtown and Lawrence University areas.” This seems like a very good thing — we want library users to stay safe. The article went on to remind us that not only must vehicles yield to pedestrians who have entered the crosswalk but that state laws say a pedestrian may not enter a crosswalk unless there is enough distance for a vehicle to safely yield.
So — don’t forget to give cars enough time to yield. We want to see you back in the Mudd.
Memorial Day Library Hours
The Library will be open 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31. Reference librarians will be on hand from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and again from 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. for your 10th week reference needs…
Mudd Students shine at Honors
Here at the Mudd, we totally rely on our student workers — and we think they’re all pretty great. So we were especially pleased to see several of the Mudd’s finest receive awards and prizes at this year’s Honors events.

For the rest of the term, a Writing Lab tutor will be at the first table on the library’s main floor from 8-10 p.m. on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights. Stop in for comprehensive assistance with the form and content of your paper by talking to a tutor and a librarian.
Mudd Gallery show: “Bound” by Nick Stahl
The new Mudd Gallery show is “Bound” by Nick Stahl. Nick says that “The act of binding reiterates the notion of ‘other’ and establishes a power struggle between the binder and the bound.” “Bound” is both an installation and a performance.
The opening reception for “Bound” will be held 6:00-8:00pm on Monday, May 3. The “Binding Performance” will take place on Tuesday, May 11 at 7:00pm.
