Tennis standout Smith named MWC Player of the Week

Lawrence University men’s tennis standout Cooper Smith has been named the Midwest Conference Player of the Week.

Smith (San Diego, Calif./Westview), a freshman, earned the award after returning from an injury to help Lawrence win the Midwest Conference North Division title for the first time.

Since the league went to divisional play in 1993, the Vikings had finished second numerous times, but Lawrence’s 5-4 win over St. Norbert College this past Sunday gave the Vikings a perfect 4-0 mark in divisional play.

Smith, who had been sidelined for weeks with a leg injury, teamed with Peter Mohr (Sheboygan, Wis./South) for an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles. Smith then turned in a dominating 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles.

Smith is now 13-5 in singles play and 10-9 in doubles.

The Vikings return to action Friday at the MWC Team Tournament and will then play in the MWC Championships this weekend.

Zane runs to MWC track award

Lawrence University track and field standout David Zane has been named the Midwest Conference Track Performer of the Week.

Zane (San Rafael, Calif./Terra Linda), a junior, earned the award after his performance at the Marquette University Twilight Invitational this past Saturday.

Zane finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase behind a Division I runner with a time of 10:10.36. Zane’s time is the third-fastest in the Midwest Conference this season.

It marked the first time in Zane’s career he has won a Midwest Conference Performer of the Week award. It also caps two weeks of fine performances for Zane. He ran a time of 15:56.74 in the 5,000 meters at the Benedictine University Invitational on April 17. That marked the first time in a decade that a Lawrence runner turned in a sub-16-minute performance in the 5,000.

The Vikings return to action on May 1 when they travel to the UW-Oshkosh Invitational.

Beloit takes two from Vikings

BELOIT, Wis. — The Beloit College baseball team swept a Midwest Conference doubleheader by the scores of 13-3 and 11-1 Tuesday at Pohlman Field.

A native of Kimberly, Wis., Adams graduated from Lawrence in 1955 and played linebacker and back on the Vikings’ football team. Adams spent more than a decade coaching football, basketball, wrestling, baseball and track and serving as a director of athletics at the prep level.

Adams moved to the University of Dubuque to become the defensive coordinator from 1982-85. He also served as the school’s head baseball coach.

Adams returned to the high school level in 1985 and worked as the assistant principal, community education director and director of athletics at Unity High School. Adams then was the the principal and director of athletics at Pittsville High School from 1990 until his retirement in 1994.
