Women’s soccer match with UW-Platteville postponed

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University women’s soccer match with UW-Platteville scheduled for Wednesday (Sept. 21) has been postponed.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected by early evening and will run through the evening. No reschedule date has been set.

The Vikings return to action this weekend when they open Midwest Conference play with a pair of matches. Lawrence faces Knox College on Saturday and Illinois College on Sunday. Both matches are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Ron Roberts Field at the Banta Bowl.

Football preview: Lawrence vs. Illinois College

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University football team is back on Ron Roberts Field at the Banta Bowl for Saturday’s Midwest Conference opener against Illinois College. Kickoff comes early with an 11:30 a.m. start against the Blueboys.

Lawrence is coming off a 14-5 nonconference win over Finlandia University on Sept. 10, and Illinois College dropped its league opener 45-35 to Macalester College last Saturday.

The Week Ahead: September 19-25

APPLETON, Wis. — Several Lawrence University teams delve into Midwest Conference play this week. Football has its league opener on Saturday when it hosts Illinois College, and men’s and women’s soccer play a pair of conference games this weekend.

The Vikings have what is possibly the earliest kickoff in Lawrence history as the football plays at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Four teams, football, volleyball, men’s soccer and women’s soccer, are all at home on Saturday.

Vikings hammer Beloit in impressive win

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University women’s tennis team put on a dominating performance Sunday at the Lawrence Courts with a 9-0 Midwest Conference victory over Beloit College.

The Vikings (5-3, 4-2 MWC) swept through the three doubles matches and dropped just one game to the Bucs (0-6, 0-5) in the process.

Lawrence also swept through the six singles matches and lost just two games. Katie Frankel (No. 1), Lindsay Holsen (No. 2), El Goblirsch (No. 5) and Katie Nottberg (No. 6) all were 6-0, 6-0 winners. Elana Lambert (No. 3) and Annie Harincar (No. 4) were both 6-0, 6-1 winners for Lawrence.

The Vikings dropped just three games total on the afternoon.

Doubles the difference as Foresters edge Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lake Forest College women’s tennis team swept the doubles competition Sunday and then hung on to post a 5-4 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University at the Lawrence Courts.

The Foresters (5-3, 3-3 MWC) led 3-0 after the doubles competition before seeing Lawrence (4-3, 3-2) battle back during singles play.

Lawrence got wins from Katie Frankel at No. 1 and El Goblirsch at No. 6 in straight sets. Lindsay Holsen at No. 2 and Alexis Shannon at No. 5 both won supertiebreakers for the Vikings. Lake Forest got straight-sets victories at Nos. 3 and 4 to secure the victory.

Arco named to all-tourney team but Vikings fall to St. Catherine’s

RIPON, Wis. — The Lawrence University volleyball team split the first two sets with St. Catherine’s University on Saturday, but the Wildcats took the final two sets to win 3-1 at the Red Hawk Invitational.

St. Catherine’s won 26-24, 21-25, 25-18, 25-17.

Lawrence’s Liz Arco was named to the all-tournament team after posting her second double-digit kill total of the day. Arco finished with a team-high 10 kills and finished with 20 kills on the day. The junior middle hitter had a .341 hitting percentage on the day.

Rachel Barthel added nine kills and 10 digs for the Vikings (4-9). Lauren Ray picked up 24 assists, and Sydney Nelson had 18. Cyra Bammer led the Vikings with 17 digs, and Katie Kumbalek picked up 14.

St. Mary’s takes down Vikings in four sets

RIPON, Wis. — The St. Mary’s University volleyball team won a tight first set and finished off Lawrence University in four sets Saturday at the Red Hawk Invitational.

St. Mary’s won 25-22, 25-15, 26-28, 25-12.

Rookie Rachel Barthel paced Lawrence (4-8) with 16 kills, and Lauren Ray piled up 24 assists and nine digs for the Vikings. Barthel also had a team-high 11 digs.

Liz Arco put together a nice match for the Vikings as she picked up 10 kills against just one error in 20 attacks for a great .450 hitting percentage. Sydney Nelson chipped in with 15 assists for Lawrence.

Loebl scores late goal, but Platteville edges Vikings

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University men’s soccer player Max Loebl scored in the final six minutes Saturday, but UW-Platteville held on for a 2-1 nonconference victory over the Vikings on Ron Roberts Field at the Banta Bowl.

Lawrence (2-4-0) trailed 2-0 when Loebl but the lead in half with his second goal of the season with just 5:07 remaining. Loebl scored off a pass from Keanan Wilson, who was set up on the play on a nice feed from Mike Deremo.

The Vikings had the ball several more times deep on the Platteville end of the field but didn’t get another good scoring chance in the final minutes.

Platteville (6-1-0) goalkeeper Will Seehawer picked up the shutout without making a save. The Pioneers had a 13-4 edge in shots. Joe Krivit made six saves for the Vikings.

Platteville took a 1-0 lead on a beautifully executed corner kick in the 20th minute. Nick Hoklas’ corner found the head of Logan Rinderknecht, who scored at 19:13.

The score was still 1-0 early in the second half when a Platteville crossing pass got past several players to the back post. The Vikings were attempting to clear it away, but it deflected into the net for an own goal, and Platteville led 2-0 at 50:41.

Women’s soccer match with North Park rescheduled for Oct. 21

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University women’s soccer match with North Park University has been rescheduled for next month.

The match, originally set to be played Saturday, is now on for Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. on Ron Roberts Field at the Banta Bowl.

Lawrence returns to action on Sunday when it travels to UW-Stevens Point for a nonconference match. Sunday’s match begins at 2 p.m.
