Lawrence soccer teams again honored for academic achievement

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University soccer teams have again been honored for academic excellence by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Both Lawrence teams have received the Team Academic Award for having a cumulative grade point average higher than 3.0 during the 2013-14 academic year.

The Lawrence women, coached by Lisa Sammons, posted a 3.33 grade point average during the year. The Lawrence men, led by long-time coach Blake Johnson, had a 3.17 grade point average. Lawrence was among 195 schools, from NCAA Division I to Division III and beyond, to have both of its teams honored.

This marks the 10th consecutive year that both Lawrence teams have earned the award. This is the 13th time since 2000 that the Lawrence women captured the award and it is the 12th time for the Lawrence men during the same period.

The Lawrence men finished eighth in the Midwest Conference this fall and had a 4-11-3 overall record. The Lawrence women had a 5-11-2 mark and took eighth place in the league.

Muchowski earns All-MWC honors for third consecutive season

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University women’s soccer standout Keli Muchowski has been named to the All-Midwest Conference team for the third consecutive season.

Muchowski (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) was selected for the second team. The senior forward led Lawrence in all offensive categories by scoring nine goals and handing out three assists for 21 points.

Muchowski scored five goals and picked up one assist in 10 conference games. She scored a season-high two goals in Lawrence’s 2-0 win over Knox College. For her career, scored 26 goals and picked up 13 assists for 65 points.

Lawrence posted a 5-11-2 overall record and finished 3-5-2 in league play.

Pieper, Salansky earn All-MWC honors

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University men’s soccer standouts Stephen Salansky and Cameron Pieper have been chosen for the All-Midwest Conference team in a vote of league coaches.

Salansky (Parker, Colo./Legend) and Pieper (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) were both chosen for the second team.

This is the third consecutive selection for Salansky, a senior defender who was s second-team pick in 2013 and a first-team selection in 2012. Salansky didn’t collect a point this season but his impact on the team was enormous as he controlled the center of the field. He led a defense that posted three shutouts and allowed one or fewer goals in 12 of 18 games.

Pieper, a senior forward, was chosen for the all-conference team for the first time. Pieper made a very successful return from a knee injury that forced him to miss nearly all of the 2013 season. Pieper led the team with six goals and picked up a pair of assists for 14 points. In 10 conference games, Pieper scored three goals and had two assists.

Lawrence finished with a 4-11-3 overall record and was 2-6-2 in Midwest Conference play.

Lawrence stings Yellowjackets

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University men’s soccer team scored a pair of first-half goals and rode that to a 2-1 nonconference win over UW-Superior on Saturday at Whiting Field West.

Cameron Pieper and Santiago Alvarez scored for Lawrence, and Robert Desotelle picked up a pair of assists in the season finale for the Vikings (4-11-3).

Lawrence struck first when Pieper rocketed a ball past Superior goalkeeper Matt Elder at the 33:04 mark. Both Desotelle and Sodai Ishii picked up assists on that goal.

Aropo Ojuli tied it at 1-1 for Superior (9-9-1) when he scored at the 38:34 mark.

Lawrence then took the lead back for good when Alvarez scored at 42:18 off assists from Erik Soderlund and Desotelle.

Joe Krivit made three saves to pick up the win for Lawrence. Elder stopped four shots for the Yellowjackets.

Newsom picks up goal, assist in Lawrence’s win over Cougars

RIVER FOREST, Ill. — Senior forward Oliver Newsom picked up a goal and an assist to lead the Lawrence University men’s soccer team to a 3-1 nonconference win over Concordia University Chicago on Monday.

Newsom got Lawrence (3-11-3) on the board when scored on a penalty kick with just 39 seconds left in the first half.

The Vikings then put the contest away with a pair of goals in a five-minute span in the second half. Freshman Lewis Berger scored on an unassisted goal at the 59:31 mark for a 2-0 edge. Senior forward Cameron Pieper then scored off an assist from Newsom at the 64:13 mark to make it 3-0.

Concordia (6-9-2) tallied its lone goal at 67:51 by DeAndre McLaurin.

Lawrence goalkeeper Joe Krivit made three saves to pick up the win. Jorge Guzman stopped eight shots for the Cougars.

Lawrence had a 19-16 edge in shots, including an 11-4 edge in shots on goal.

Lawrence shuts out Bucs

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University men’s soccer team scored three second-half goals to post a 3-0 Midwest Conference win over Beloit College on Saturday at Whiting Field West.

Joe Cullen, Lewis Berger and Santiago Alvarez all scored for the Vikings (2-11-3, 2-6-2 MWC).

After pressuring the Bucs (2-13-0, 2-6-0) throughout the first half, Lawrence finally broke through 18 minutes into the second half. Cullen pounded in a ball from point-blank range off assists from Sodai Ishii and Mike Deremo at the 63:32 mark for a 1-0 lead.

Just under 10 minutes later, Lewis Berger picked up his first career goal off Nick Huth’s rebound to put Lawrence up 2-0 at 73:13. The Vikings sealed the victory on Santiago Alvarez’s goal off a pass from Dominic Pasquesi at 77:06.

Lawrence goalkeeper Joe Krivit made one save to pick up the shutout. BJ Kiser stopped 11 shots for Beloit.

Lawrence had a 24-2 edge in shots.

Lawrence to celebrate Appleton Soccer Club Day at Saturday’s matches

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University soccer programs will celebrate Appleton Soccer Club Day on Saturday at Whiting Field West.

Players from the Appleton Soccer Club will have the opportunity to play on the field during halftime of each game. Appleton Soccer Club players are asked to wear their jerseys in order to participate in the games.

The Lawrence men will get the action started when they face Beloit College in a Midwest Conference match at 12:30 p.m. The women’s match vs. Beloit will follow at 3 p.m. There is no admission charge for Lawrence soccer matches.

Whiting Field West is located to the west of Alexander Gymnasium at 1100 E. South River Street in Appleton.

The Appleton Soccer Club serves the entire Fox Valley region and provides playing opportunities for pre-school aged children all the way through high school and beyond.

Grinnell tops Vikings on penalty kick

GRINNELL, Iowa — The string of close losses for the Lawrence University men’s soccer team continued on Saturday with a 1-0 Midwest Conference setback at Grinnell College.

The lone goal came on Benjamin Warner’s penalty kick in the 42nd minute.

This marks the eighth one-goal loss of the season for the Vikings.

Joe Krivit stopped 11 shots in net for the Vikings, and Isaiah Tyree made four saves to pick up the shutout for Grinnell.

Late goal lifts St. Norbert past Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. — The St. Norbert College men’s soccer team scored with less than seven minutes left to pull out a 3-2 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University on Wednesday at the USA Youth Sports Complex.

St. Norbert’s Kevin Marx scored off Sean Sladky’s free kick at the 83:34 mark to break a 2-2 tie.

Lawrence (1-10-2, 1-5-1 MWC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half. Robert Desotelle got the Vikings on the board when he took a pass from Joe Cullen and scored for a 1-0 edge at the 37:34 mark. Cam Pieper, who picked up an assist on the first Lawrence goal, then scored at 42:47 to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead.

St. Norbert (8-2-2, 2-1-2) cut the lead in half on Robert Quinlan’s goal with just 53 seconds left in the first half. The Green Knights then tied it on Jim Blisk’s goal at the 64:56 mark.

Scott Faul made five saves for St. Norbert, and backup goalkeeper Aaron Sutton stopped 10 shots for Lawrence.
