Vikings blank Lakeland

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University men’s tennis team rolled to a 9-0 nonconference shutout of Lakeland College on Friday night at Fox Cities Racquet Club.

Lawrence (5-2) dropped just two games total in dismantling the Muskies (0-3).

Bill Schuman-Kline at No. 2 singles, Ethan Perushek at No. 3, David Brooker at No. 4 and Kieran Laursen at No. 5 all won by 6-0, 6-0 scores. Those were the first collegiate singles victories for both Brooker and Laursen.

David Jumes improved to 7-0 on the season at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 victory.

The Vikings also were strong in the doubles, winning 8-0 at No. 1 and 8-1 at No. 2. Lawrence won the No. 3 doubles match by default.

Titans take down Lawrence

OSHKOSH, Wis. — The UW-Oshkosh men’s tennis team took four of the six singles matches Saturday to close out a 6-3 nonconference victory over Lawrence University at the YMCA Tennis Center.

Lawrence (4-2) trailed 2-1 after the doubles competition with David Jumes and Brian DeCorte picking up an 8-4 win at No. 2 for the Vikings.

Jumes and DeCorte also earned both singles wins for Lawrence. Jumes won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and DeCorte was a 6-3, 6-4 winner at No. 2.

UW-Oshkosh (3-5) swept the Nos. 3-6 singles matches.

Vikings sweep past Wisconsin Lutheran

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University men’s tennis team rolled to a 9-0 non-conference win over Wisconsin Lutheran College on Friday at Fox Cities Racquet Club.

The Vikings dropped just seven games total in the three doubles matches with David Jumes and Brian DeCorte posting an impressive 8-1 win at No. 1.

Lawrence didn’t drop a set in winning all six singles matches. Bill Schuman-Kline routed Ben Wordell 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3, and Izaya Turenne was an impressive 6-0, 6-2 winner at No. 6 for the Vikings (4-1).

Ethan Perushek rallied to win in straight sets at No. 5. After taking the first set 6-3, Perushek was down 3-0 in the second set before winning six straight games to close out the match.

Lawrence edged by Falcons

JACKSON, Wis. — The Concordia University of Wisconsin men’s tennis team won a pair of super-tiebreakers to edge Lawrence University 5-4 in a non-conference match on Saturday.

The Vikings led 2-1 after the doubles competition as David Jumes and Brian DeCorte won at No. 1 and Bill Schuman-Kline and David Brooker were victorious at No. 3.

Jumes was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at No. 1 singles, and DeCorte rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 2. After the Vikings (3-1) lost at No. 3 and No. 5 singles, it came down to two matches.

Trevor Budewitz of Concordia (4-1) rallied for a 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 win over Adam Busch at No. 4 with Budewitz winning the super-tiebreaker 10-3.

Robert Spiering then topped Ethan Perushek 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 1-0, taking the super-tiebreaker 10-8.

Unbeaten Jumes named MWC Player of the Week

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University men’s tennis standout David Jumes has been named the Midwest Conference Player of the Week.

Jumes (Appleton, Wis./Xavier) was perfect for the week and remains unbeaten in the young season. Jumes turned in three impressive and led Lawrence to a 2-0 record.

Playing at No. 1 singles, Jumes posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Lincoln Wurtz as part of Lawrence’s 9-0 win over Ripon College. That also marked the ninth consecutive time the Vikings have topped the Red Hawks in a dual match.

Jumes followed that with a 6-1, 6-1 No. 1 singles win over Matthew Sablay as part of Lawrence’s 8-1 non-conference thumping of the University of Dubuque. Jumes also teamed with Brian DeCorte for an 8-2 victory over Dubuque at No. 1 doubles.

Jumes is now 3-0 on the season in singles and has a 2-0 doubles mark with DeCorte.

This is the first Player of the Week selection for Jumes and the first for the Vikings since Ethan Perushek was chosen in February 2015.

Lawrence is now 3-0 and returns to on Saturday when the Vikings travel to Concordia University of Wisconsin.

Lawrence routs Dubuque 8-1

DUBUQUE, Iowa — The Lawrence University men’s tennis team routed the University of Dubuque 8-1 in a non-conference match on Saturday.

Lawrence swept the doubles matches and won five of the six singles contests to improve to 3-0 on the season. The Spartans fall to 1-3.

Sophomore Bill Schuman-Kline pitched a shutout at No. 4 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Jordan Hamling. He also teamed with David Brooker for an 8-5 victory at No. 2 doubles.

David Jumes completed a stellar day with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles, and teamed with Brian DeCorte for an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles. DeCorte also was a 7-5, 6-2 winner at No. 2 singles.

Izaya Turenne (No. 5) and Ethan Perushek (No. 6) also picked up singles wins for Lawrence, and Perushek teamed with Adam Busch for a win at No. 3 doubles.

Vikings roll to shutout win over Ripon

DUBUQUE, Iowa — The Lawrence University men’s tennis team continued its dominance over Ripon College with a 9-0 Midwest Conference victory on Saturday.

Lawrence has now won nine straight over Ripon on a streak that dates back to the 2008 season.

The Vikings (2-0, 1-0 MWC) made quick work of the Red Hawks (0-4, 0-1) in the doubles competition. Bill Schuman-Kline and David Brooker won for the Vikings at No. 1 doubles, and Ben Tomhave and Kieran Laursen were winners at No. 2. Lawrence won No. 3 doubles by default.

The win was the first collegiate victory for Laursen, a freshman from Traverse City, Mich.

Lawrence rolled through the doubles matches, dropping a total of just five games in the five matches that were played. The Vikings won by default at No. 6.

David Jumes at No. 1, Brian DeCorte at No. 2, Adam Busch at No. 3, Izaya Turenne at No. 4 and Ethan Perushek at No. 5 all lost just one game apiece.

Vikings open season by doubling up MSOE

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — The Lawrence University men’s tennis team opened its season with a 6-3 non-conference win over the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Sunday.

The match also featured a pair of first collegiate victories for the Vikings. Sophomore Bill Schuman-Kline teamed with rookie David Brooker as they earned their first ever doubles win, an 8-2 victory at No. 3. Schuman-Kline also got his first singles victory when he knocked off Kyle Fassbender in straight sets at No. 5.

David Jumes and Brian DeCorte were winners at No. 1 doubles for the Vikings, and Jumes also won impressively at No. 1 singles. Adam Busch won a super-tiebreaker to take his No. 4 singles matches, and Izaya Turenne did the same for the Vikings at No. 6.

Abaray emerges from national search to lead Lawrence Department of Athletics

APPLETON, Wis. — Christyn Abaray is the new Lawrence University Director of Athletics, President Mark Burstein announced today.

Abaray takes over for Mike Szkodzinski, who announced this past spring he was stepping down to devote his full attention to coaching the Vikings’ ice hockey team. Abaray has served as director of athletics at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa, since June 2012.

Lawrence tennis teams honored by ITA for academic achievement

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University women’s and men’s tennis teams and 15 student-athletes have been honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

The Vikings earned the ITA All-Academic Team award after the women posted a 3.64 cumulative grade point average and the men had a 3.49 GPA. A team needed a GPA of at least 3.20 for the 2014-15 academic year to be eligible for the award.

Eight members of the women’s team were named ITA Scholar-Athletes after posting a grade point average of at least 3.50. Seven of the men’s players earned the Scholar-Athlete designation as well.

Leading the way for the Lawrence women were seniors Melissa Heeren (Wausau, Wis./East), Allison Juda (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and Tess Vogel (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug), who all posted perfect 4.0 GPAs for the 2014-15 academic year.

Senior Elena Watson (Sunbury, Ohio/Big Walnut), junior Ali Heiring (Wayzata, Minn./Wayzata), sophomores Katie Frankel (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) and Cathryn Wood (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba) and freshman Lindsay Holsen (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc) all earned the Scholar-Athlete award.

On the men’s side, juniors Adam Busch (Hales Corners, Wis./Greendale Martin Luther), Brian DeCorte (Southampton, Pa./William Tennent), Mitch Kasprzyk (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) and Ethan Perushek (Maple Grove, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret’s), sophomore David Jumes (Appleton, Wis./Xavier) and freshmen Sotaro Kurahashi (Tokyo, Japan/Waseda University) and Ben Tomhave (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet) all earned the Scholar-Athlete award.

Busch posted the highest GPA among the men at 3.81, and Perushek was at 3.75.

Lawrence tennis had 16 student-athletes also earn Academic All-Midwest Conference honors.

The Lawrence women finished the 2014-15 season with an 8-8 record in dual matches and finished fifth in the Midwest Conference. The men were 10-14 and also finished fifth in the conference.
