Schrobilgen, Edwards pace Vikings at UWO

WINNECONNE, Wis. — Erin Schrobilgen and Max Edwards were the top Lawrence University finishers on Saturday at the massive UW-Oshkosh Invitational at Lake Breeze Golf Club.

Freshman Erin Schrobilgen paced all Lawrence runners by taking 137th. Schrobilgen covered the 6,000-meter course in 23:29 to lead the Lawrence women to 26th place in the team standings with 855 points.

Cora Williams was next for Lawrence in 155th place, and Clare Bruning was close behind in 164th. Hannah Kinzer (198th) and Amy Hutchings (201st) finished the scoring for the Vikings.

Max Edwards and Kyle Dockery were the top finishers for the Lawrence men, who placed 33rd in the team standings with 1,056 points. Edwards was 174th and covered the 8,000-meter course in 26:50. Dockery was 177th and finished in 26:54. Rounding out the scoring for Lawrence were Cam Davies (228th), Pat Mangan (232nd) and Jonah Laursen (245th).

Edwards runs down weekly cross country honor

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University cross country standout Max Edwards has been named the Midwest Conference Performer of the Week.

Edwards (Appleton, Wis./North) posted the best finish of his Lawrence career as he took second at Lawrence’s Gene Davis Invitational this past Saturday. Edwards covered the 8,000-meter course at Reid Municipal Golf Course in 26:42.36 on a cold and rainy morning.

This is the first weekly conference honor for Edwards, who joined the squad this season. Led by Edwards, Lawrence placed third in the team standings with 80 points and trailed only UW-Stevens Point (46) and UW-Oshkosh (78).

Lawrence returns to action on Oct. 18 when it travels to Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne to compete in the UW-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational.

 

Lawrence women second, men third at Gene Davis Invitational

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University women’s cross country team finished second and the men were third at Saturday’s Gene Davis Invitational at Reid Golf Course.

The Lawrence women finished with 48 points and were edged by St. Norbert College, who won the title with 47. St. Norbert’s Lisa Baeten won the individual title by covering the 6,000-meter course in 23:19.45.

Clare Bruning ran to second place for Lawrence with a time of 23:29.95. Cora Williams was next for Lawrence in eighth place in 23:52.25, and she was followed by Erin Schrobilgen in 10th place (24:03.29), Hannah Kinzer in 13th (24:23.86) and Elin Karlsson in 15th (24:37.35).

On the men’s side, UW-Stevens Point won the title with 46 points, and UW-Oshkosh was second with 78. Lawrence was close behind the Titans, finishing third in the team standings with 80 points.

UW-Oshkosh’s Trevor Damkot won the individual title by finishing in 26:36.12 on the 8,000-meter course. Lawrence’s Max Edwards was second in 26:42.36. Kyle Dockery came in next for the Vikings in fifth place with a time of 26:49.17. Cam Davies was 13th (27:09.76), Jonah Laursen was 24th (27:35.97) and Pat Mangan was 36th (28:05.30) to complete the scoring for Lawrence.

Lawrence women race to eighth at Griak Invitational

FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. — The Lawrence University women’s cross country team put together a fast pack on Saturday and raced to an eighth-place finish at the Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota.

Sophomore Cora Williams paced the women’s team by covering the 6,000-meter course in 24:59.0 to place 37th. Only 27 places separated Lawrence’s first runner from its fifth.

Freshman Erin Schrobilgen and sophomore Clare Bruning went back-to-back, finishing 41st and 42nd. Schrobilgen finished in 25:00.7, and Bruning checked in at 25:02.3. Freshman Hannah Kinzer was next in 55th place in 25:25.2, and sophomore Amy Hutchings rounded out the scoring by placing 64th in 26:00.0.

Lawrence finished with 239 points, and UW-La Crosse won the title with 60 points in a 20-team field.

On the men’s side, Lawrence finished 10th with 295 points, and UW-La Crosse won with 43.

The top finisher for the Vikings was sophomore Jonah Larusen, who finished 42nd. He covered the 8,000-meter course in 28:56.0. Sophomore Max Edwards was close behind as he took 50th in 29:22.2. Kyle Dockery was 63rd in 30:05.4, Cam Davies was 69th in 30:29.9 and Chris Fuelling rounded out the scoring by placing 71st in 30:24.2.

Lawrence competes on its home turf next Saturday when it hosts the Gene Davis Invitational at Reid Municipal Golf Course.

Schrobilgen runs to MWC Performer of the Week award

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University cross country standout Erin Schrobilgen has been named the Midwest Conference Performer of the Week.

Schrobilgen (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park River Forest), a freshman, earned the honor after a stellar performance at the Concordia (Wis.) University Falcon Invitational this past Saturday.

Schrobilgen turned in one of the Midwest Conference’s best times of the season over 6,000 meters as she finished seventh at the Falcon Invitational. Schrobilgen’s effort of 23:06.00 is the third-fastest time this season at that distance. Led by Schrobilgen, the Vikings finished second in the team standings.

This was the first Performer of the Week award for Schrobilgen and the first for Lawrence since the 2013 season when Jonah Laursen and Jamie Brisbois both captured the men’s award. It’s the first time a Lawrence women’s runner took the honor since Emily Muhs did it in Sept. 2010.

Lawrence returns to action on Sept. 27 when it heads to the Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota.

Schrobilgen, Bruning lead Vikings to second at Concordia

MEQUON, Wis. — Erin Schrobilgen and Clare Bruning led the Lawrence University women’s cross country team to a second-place finish on Saturday at the Concordia (Wis.) University Falcon Invitational.

Schrobilgen raced to seventh place, covering the 6,000-meter course in 23:06.0, and Bruning came across the line in 14th place with a time of 23:30.5. Rounding out the scoring for the Vikings were Amy Hutchings (33rd, 24:17.2), Cora Williams (34th, 24:17.3) and Liz Landes (34th, 24:18.6).

On the men’s side, Lawrence finished tied for fifth with 175 points. The top finisher for the Vikings was Max Edwards, who placed 16th and covered the 8,000-meter course in 26:54.1. Kyle Dockery was close behind as he took 19th in 27:15.1. Completing the scoring for Lawrence were Cam Davies (36th, 28:17.8), Jonah Laursen (42nd, 28:29.9) and Teddy Kortenhof (62nd, 29:01.7).

UW-La Crosse won both the men’s and women’s team titles.

Schrobilgen races to fifth in collegiate debut

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Rookie Erin Schrobilgen raced to fifth place to pace the Lawrence University cross country teams in her collegiate debut on Saturday at the St. Norbert College Tom Barry Invitational.

Schrobilgen covered the 5,000-meter course at Colburn Park in 20:02.8.

Paced by Schrobilgen, the Lawrence women placed third in the team standings with 78 points. St. Norbert won the title with 30 points.

The Lawrence women were tightly bunched as Clare Bruning (13th), Liz Landes (19th), Amy Hutchings (20th) and Elin Karlsson (21st) rounded out the scoring.

The Lawrence men finished sixth with 147 points. St. Norbert won the title with 65 points.

Sophomore and Appleton native Max Edwards, running his first race for Lawrence, was the Vikings’ top finisher. Edwards placed 17th and covered the four miles in 22:24.1.

Also scoring for Lawrence were Jonah Laursen (26th), Kyle Dockery (29th), Cam Davies (34th) and Teddy Kortenhof (41st).

Lawrence student-athletes honored on academic all-conference team

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University had 165 student-athletes earn Academic All-Midwest Conference honors for 2013-14.

To be eligible for selection, a student-athlete must have a minimum grade point average of 3.3 during the academic year.

The women’s swimming and diving team led Lawrence with 16 student-athletes honored. Lawrence had five other teams that had double-digit selections — women’s outdoor track and field, women’s cross country, women’s indoor track and field, women’s soccer and men’s soccer.

The women’s outdoor track and field team was next with 15 student-athletes honored. Women’s cross country had 13 of its 16 team members chosen, and women’s indoor track and field had 13 selections. Women’s soccer had 10 selections, and women’s tennis saw nine of its 11 student-athletes chosen.

Lawrence’s top men’s team was soccer, which had 10 selections. Men’s golf had seven of its 11 student-athletes chosen.

Lawrence had 64 student-athletes chosen from the fall season, 57 from the winter season and 44 from the spring season.

Lawrence student-athletes receive awards at Honors Celebration

APPLETON, Wis. — Sixteen Lawrence University student-athletes were recently honored at the 2014 Honors Celebration.

The awards and winners are as follows.

The Ruth Bateman Award is given for excellence in scholarship, athletic ability and leadership by a female athlete. Junior Taylor Winter (Bayside, Wis./Nicolet) won the award after completing another stellar season. Winter won the 1,650-yard freestyle and 500 freestyle at the 2014 Midwest Conference Championships and also took the 1,650 title in the Wisconsin Private College Championships. A three-time MWC champion, Winter also holds the school records in both the 1,000 and 1,650 freestyle.

The Iden Charles Champion Cup is given for excellence in scholarship, athletic ability, college spirit and loyalty. Junior Andrew Borresen (West Bend, Wis./Living Word Lutheran) is a reserve on the men’s basketball team and deeply involved in campus life. A member of the Dean’s List and Mortar Board, Borresen has a 3.89 grade point average and is majoring in history. Borresen is set to capture his third consecutive Academic All-Midwest Conference selection. The co-chairman of Lawrence’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Borresen also works in the Lawrence’s sports information office and for the Lawrentian, the student newspaper.

The Outstanding Freshman Athletic Award for Men is given the freshman man who has made the most outstanding contribution to Lawrence athletics. Blake Roubos (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Michael’s) won the award after lettering in two sports during his rookie year at Lawrence. A hockey and tennis standout, Roubos was named to the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association all-freshmen team and was named a NCHA Player of the Week during the season. Roubos led the team in scoring with 26 points on a team-best 16 assists and 10 goals. Roubos recorded his first career hat trick and the first hat trick for a Lawrence player since the 2009-10 season when he scored three times in a 4-2 win over Finlandia University that clinched a berth in the NCHA playoffs. Roubos had a season-best five points and a season-high three assists to go with two goals in Lawrence’s 6-6 nonconference tie with Gustavus Adolphus College early in the season. Roubos was a starter at No. 3 doubles and played matches at No. 6 singles for tennis team. Roubos and Sam Wiener won the consolation title at No. 3 doubles at the Midwest Conference Championships.

The Outstanding Freshman Athletic Award for Women is given to the freshman woman who has made the most outstanding contribution to Lawrence athletics. Amy Hutchings (Ripon, Wis./Ripon) earned the award after earning letters in both cross country and track and field. During the cross country season, Hutchings finished ninth at the Midwest Conference Championships to earn all-conference honors. Hutchings, who is one of just three women in Lawrence history to finish in the conference’s top 10 as a freshman, led Lawrence to a third-place finish at the league meet. Hutchings also competed in multiple distance events in both indoor and outdoor track.

The Ralph V. Landis Award was established by the Lettermen of Lawrence in honor of Dr. Landis, physician to Lawrence students from 1926-78, and is awarded for outstanding contributions to Lawrence athletics by a senior male athlete. Luke Barthelmess (Appleton, Wis./Principia) completed a record-setting career at quarterback for the Lawrence football team. A 2013 All-Midwest Conference selection, Barthelmess completed 193 of 346 passes for 2,133 yards and 14 touchdowns. He finished second in the league at 213.3 passing yards per game. Barthelmess also ran 177 times for 889 yards and two touchdowns. Barthelmess, who averaged 5.0 yards per carry, finished eighth in the conference at 88.9 yards per game. Barthelmess also finished first in the league in total offense at 302.2 yards per game. Barthelmess, who is Lawrence’s career leader in a number of passing categories, completed 648 of 1,181 passes in his career. He threw for a record 8,190 yards and a record 62 touchdown passes. Barthelmess, who was named the MVP at the Bowl of the Stars in Mexico, is the starting quarterback for the Stuttgart Scorpions of the German Football League.

The Charles E. Pond Award for Men is given for all-around athletic ability by a senior man in two or more sports and for sportsmanship, school spirit and scholarship. Dan Thoresen (Verona, Wis./Verona) earned the award after completing a stellar career in cross country and track and field. Thoresen earned All-Midwest Conference honors four times in track and field and was a member of Lawrence’s 2011 conference championship cross country squad. A biology major, Thoresen has a 3.935 grade point average in biology.

The Marion Read Award is given for outstanding contributions to Lawrence athletics. The award had two winners this year as seniors Mary Diduch (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) and Hannah Gabriel (Elmhurst, Ill./York) shared the award. Diduch won four letters in softball and was part of the 2014 and 2014 squads that reached the Midwest Conference Tournament. Diduch also worked as a student manager for the football team and served in a leadership position with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Gabriel was a two-time Midwest Conference champion, taking the title twice in the 200-yard freestyle and setting a meet record in the event. Gabriel also holds the school record in the 200 freestyle and is part of record-holding teams in the 400 medley relay, 400 freestyle relay and 800 freestyle relay.

The Letterwinner Award is presented by the L Club to those outstanding seniors who have earned eight or more letters. The winners are:

Cross country teams honored again for academic achievement

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University cross country teams have been named Scholar Teams by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for 2013.

This marks the fifth consecutive year that both Lawrence’s men’s and women’s teams have been honored. To receive the award, a team must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.1.

The Lawrence women posted a 3.40 grade point average, and Vikings were one of five teams from the Midwest Conference to win the award. The Lawrence men were at 3.30 and were one of four teams from the league to capture the award.

Lawrence, under the direction of head coach Jason Fast, had another outstanding season. The men’s team, led by all-conference runners, Jamie Brisbois, Kyle Dockery and Jonah Laursen finished second in the conference. The Lawrence women moved up five places in the conference’s team standings to finish third and had four all-conference runners, Clare Bruning, Amy Hutchings, Cora Williams and Liz Landes.
