CLERMONT, Fla. — The Millikin University softball team pulled away late Saturday to post a 9-1 nonconference victory over Lawrence University.
Millikin collected just seven hits but took advantage of eight Lawrence errors.
Kailey Lyons and Marissa Padilla had two hits apiece, and Alyssa Voegele drove in three runs for Millikin (9-6). Gracie Brookens allowed four hits over five innings to pick up the victory.
Madeline MacLean allowed five earned runs and took the loss for Lawrence (0-3).
CLERMONT, Fla. — The North Park University softball team rallied Friday for a 7-4 nonconference victory over Lawrence University.
North Park (1-8) scored the final five runs of the game to rally from a 4-2 deficit.
Ellie Manderfeld went 3-for-4 and Kelly Rosenbaum was 2-for-4 and drove in three runs for North Park. Amara Leith went the distance to pick up the victory. She allowed five hits, struck out three and walked two.
Emilia Jackson took the loss in first collegiate start for Lawrence (0-2). She gave up nine hits and six runs, only three earned, in 3.2 innings. He struck out four and walked one.
Madeline MacLean, who worked 2.1 innings of relief, went 2-for-3 for Lawrence, and Amanda Karnatz’s first collegiate hit was a three-run triple.
Lawrence trailed 2-1 with the bases loaded in the second when Karnatz drove in all three runs with a triple and a 4-2 lead.
Lawrence then gave up an unearned run in the bottom half of the inning and three more runs in the fourth, including two on Rosenbaum’s single. North Park added an insurance run in the sixth.
CLERMONT, Fla. — Kayli Paugh fired a two-hit shutout Friday to lead the Hood College softball team to a 2-0 victory over Lawrence University in the season opener for the Vikings.
Paugh struck out eight and walked two while allowing a single in the second inning and another single in the third. Paugh also went 2-for-3 and drove in both runs for Hood (8-3).
Hood scored a run in the first on Paugh’s RBI double, and added another run in the fourth on Paugh’s lead-off homer.
Madeline MacLean made the start for the Vikings and allowed only six hits. She struck out two and did not walk a batter.
The only hits for the Vikings came from Sofie Pedersen and Kori Looker.
APPLETON, Wis. — The faces may have changed for the Lawrence University softball team, but the expectations for the Vikings remain the same.
Lawrence lost two-thirds of its 2016 lineup as five senior starters graduated, but Vikings coach Kim Tatro believes this year’s squad can prosper. Lawrence opens its season Friday and will play 12 games during a week in Clermont, Fla.
“I don’t think our expectations change at all,” said Tatro, who enters her 23rd season at Lawrence. “We may take a different route to get there, but our goals are still the same. We have enough of the core back that knows what it’s like to be successful. The huge key for us is staying healthy.”
The Vikings have a small roster with just 12 players, but Lawrence has some key players back and an influx of new talent.
“I do think, call me crazy, that when we’re firing on all cylinders and everyone is doing their thing, we can be pretty successful in the Midwest Conference,” Tatro said.
The Vikings return regular starters Madeline MacLean, Kori Looker, Rachel Urich and Sofie Pedersen, along with Marisa Thackston, who missed time due to injury in 2016.
Perhaps the key returning player is senior catcher Sam Belletini, who missed all of last season due to injury. A career .350 hitter, Belletini is a 2015 All-Midwest Conference and All-Great Lakes Region selection. Belletini has pounded out 23 doubles, one triple, four homers and 44 runs batted in during her career.
“It’s like having another coach on the field. She knows the game,” Tatro said of Belletini. “The value she brings to the table from a mental perspective might even be greater than the the tools she brings from a physical perspective.”
Belletini will be catching a trio of pitchers with MacLean leading the way. MacLean went 10-8 with a 3.67 earned run average as a rookie in 2016, and she hit .301 with three homers and 13 RBI. Newcomers Lexi Angemi and Emilia Jackson also figure to see time in the circle.
“It sounds weird for us to talk about depth at any position with just 12, but we feel really comfortable with our pitchers,” Tatro said.
“All three have different strengths and that’s good for us. If someone’s out there and struggling, we can make changes. They are all very capable of playing other positions as well. We can keep them in the game and maybe go back to them.”
Angemi is likely to man first base, and Jackson could see action in the outfield.
With Thackston back at second base, Urich will slide over to shortstop and Looker returns at third. Senior Rheya Upadhyaya returns to left field after missing the 2016 season, and sophomore Sofie Pedersen slides over to right.
The most electric newcomer looks to be freshman Amanda Karnatz, who will patrol center field.
“We have high expectations for Amanda, and she has some pretty high expectations for herself,” Tatro said. “She has a skill set that’s often difficult to teach. It’s not that she’s flat-out fast. She’s smart and flat-out fast. She’s a very dominant outfielder who covers a lot of ground and can throw out people with the best of them.”
The Vikings’ depth is limited, but sophomore Sophie Carter will back up Belletini behind the plate and rookie Summer Kopitzke will be a utility player.
Tatro said she’s anxious to see her team in game action against a challenging schedule in Florida.
“We just will not be sure what to expect until we take the field and see how we respond,” Tatro said. “As the season goes on, hopefully we grow and mature.”
APPLETON, Wis. — Tyler Ayers has been named the Athletic Performance Coach at Lawrence University, Director of Athletics Christyn Abaray announced today.
Ayers was hired after a national search to fill this position, which is new to the Department of Athletics.
“We are excited to have Tyler join our LU family as our first full-time Athletic Performance Coach,” Abaray said. “He comes from a knowledge-rich environment for the athletic performance industry so his credentials and experiences are impressive. Beyond this and even more striking was his ability to effectively communicate with all of the different people he encountered, including student-athletes. With him at the helm, I am confident that we will build upon where we are and make even more significant strides.”
Ayers was the assistant strength and conditioning coach at Webber International University in Babson Park, Fla. Ayers, a native of Daytona Beach, Fla., had served in that role since July 2015.
“I would like to thank the Lawrence University administration, search committee and Christyn for this opportunity,” Ayers said. “I believe my job is two-fold. Number one, it’s about impacting the lives of the student-athletes in a positive manner by taking what we learn in the weight room — hard work, determination, toughness, etc. — and applying it to daily life. This all translates into their life after athletics, molding them into great future employees, husbands and wives and mothers and fathers. Number two, it’s about increasing their athletic performance on and off the field while trying to keep them as healthy as possible. If I can do those two things, I will consider my time here successful at Lawrence University.”
Ayers served as the interim head strength and conditioning coach at Stetson University in 2015 before going back to Webber International. He had worked at Webber International as coaching assistant for strength and conditioning for a number of sports.
A 2014 graduate of Anderson (Ind.) University with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science, Ayers also holds certifications from the National Strength and Conditioning Association, USA Weightlifting and the American Red Cross. Ayers played football at Anderson and served as the team captain as a senior in 2013.
Lawrence opens the fall sports season on Sept. 1 when the men’s soccer team travels to Concordia University of Wisconsin. The Vikings’ first home contest is Sept. 7 when men’s soccer hosts MSOE in the Banta Bowl.
APPLETON, Wis. — More than 150 Lawrence University student-athletes have been selected for the Academic All-Midwest Conference team.
The Vikings had 158 student-athletes meet the requirements for inclusion on the academic all-conference team. To be eligible for the team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.33 grade point average during the 2015-16 academic year.
Six Lawrence teams hit double digits with more than 10 student-athletes being honored. The top Lawrence team was women’s swimming and diving, which had 19 student-athletes make the cut. The top men’s team was soccer, which had 16 student-athletes chosen.

APPLETON, Wis. — More than a dozen Lawrence University student-athletes recently received awards at the 2016 Honors Celebration.
The awards and winners are as follows.
The Ruth Bateman Award is given for excellence in scholarship, athletic ability and leadership by a female athlete. Senior softball player Tierney Duffy (North Riverside, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield) won the award after finishing her career with a .347 batting average. A starting outfielder for four seasons, Duffy was an All-Midwest Conference and All-Great Lakes Region selection in 2016. The co-chair of Lawrence’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Duffy was a leader in organizing the inaugural BLUCrew Awards, helped raise $13,000 with the Special Olympics Polar Plunge and worked with the Kids Give program. Duffy has a 3.6 grade point average and is a member of the Academic All-Midwest Conference team.
The Iden Charles Champion Cup is given for excellence in scholarship, athletic ability, college spirit and loyalty. Senior hockey player Renato Engler (Davos, Switzerland) served as the team captain and was a two-time Northern Collegiate Hockey Association All-Academic team member. Engler led the team in 2015-16 with nine goals and 16 assists for 25 points and recently signed to play professional hockey in his native Switzerland.
The Outstanding Freshman Athletic Award for Men is given the freshman man who has made the most outstanding contribution to Lawrence athletics. Football player Ryan Butterfield (McDonough, Ga./Strong Rock Christian) was the team’s starting quarterback. He completed 85-of-164 passes for 967 yards, nine touchdowns and four interceptions. He also ran 82 times for 549 yards and three touchdowns. Butterfield was named the Midwest Conference Offensive Player of the Week and was chosen as the USA College Football Rookie of the Week. He posted the first 200-plus yard rushing game for the Vikings since 2002 and posted the longest touchdown run (79 yards) by a quarterback in school history.
The Outstanding Freshman Athletic Award for Women is given to the freshman woman who has made the most outstanding contribution to Lawrence athletics. Outside hitter Arianna Neumeyer (Manitowoc, Wis./Lutheran) was an All-Midwest Conference selection for the Lawrence volleyball team. She led the team with 215 kills and at 2.42 kills per set. Neumeyer also finished second on the team with 25 aces and was third with 282 digs.
The Ralph V. Landis Award was established by the Lettermen of Lawrence in honor of Dr. Landis, physician to Lawrence students from 1926-78, and is awarded for outstanding contributions to Lawrence athletics by a senior male athlete. Senior men’s basketball player Jamie Nikitas (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) was a first-team All-Midwest Conference selection and one of 10 national finalists for the Josten’s Trophy, given annually to the top player in NCAA Division III. Nikitas finished in the top 10 in the nation in scoring at 25.1 points per game and broke Lawrence’s season scoring record with 577 points. He was the only player in the Midwest Conference to finish in the top seven in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals. Nikitas was named the United States Basketball Writers Association Player of the Week, was chosen for the D3hoops.com Team of the Week and was twice named Midwest Conference Player of the Week.
The Charles E. Pond Award for Women is given for all-around athletic ability by a senior woman in two or more sports and for sportsmanship, school spirit and scholarship. Swimmer and track athlete Hayley Cardinal (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) was a multiple Midwest Conference champion for the Vikings. In the pool, Cardinal won the 100-yard breaststroke in 2014 and took titles in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke in 2016. Cardinal, who made an NCAA “B” cut three times, holds the Lawrence records in the 100 and 200 breaststroke and the 200 individual medley. She also is part of the 200 and 400 medley relay teams. Cardinal is a member of the Academic All-Midwest Conference team and served as the swim team captain. She also run the hurdles and relays for the Lawrence track team.
The Marion Read Award is given for outstanding contributions to Lawrence athletics. Softball shortstop Amanda Jaskolski (Shawano, Wis./Shawano) capped her career by earning first-team National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America honors. A two-team All-Great Lakes Region selection, Jaskolski was a career .439 hitter with 17 doubles, two triples, 19 homers and 76 runs batted in. She holds Lawrence season records for hits (54), RBIs (46), runs scored (37) and homers (13). Jaskolski was a two-time Midwest Conference Player of the Year and hit .462 with 13 homers and 46 RBIs as a senior.

The inaugural event is sponsored by Lawrence University’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). SAAC will hand out 12 awards to its fellow Vikings and announce the All-Viking Team.
The event begins at 7 p.m. and is open to the public.

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University softball stars Meg Krautsch and Tierney Duffy have been selected for the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Great Lakes Region team.
Both Duffy (North Riverside, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield) and Krautsch (Oshkosh, Wis./West) were chosen for the second team.
Duffy, a senior outfielder, hit a career-high .418 for the season, and that ranked second in the Midwest Conference. She posted a .457 on-base percentage, scored 27 runs and swiped 20 bases in 23 tries. Duffy posted 10 multi-hit games, including three three-hit games.
Krautsch, a sophomore shortstop, hit a career-high .405 with seven doubles, one triple, two homers and a team-best 30 runs batted in despite being limited to just 24 games due to injury. Krautsch missed the final 10 games of the season.
Krautsch was a consistent force at the plate throughout the season, collecting at least one hit in 17 of 24 games. She went a season-best 4-for-4 against Kalamazoo College and drove in a season-high five runs against Rockford University.
Krautsch also was superb in the field as she committed just two errors for a stellar .980 fielding percentage.
This marks the ninth consecutive year Lawrence has had at least one all-region selection and the 19th time in the past 20 years.
Lawrence finished with an 18-14-2 overall record and an 11-8-1 mark in Midwest Conference play.
APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University softball standout Tierney Duffy was the Vikings’ lone selection to the All-Midwest Conference team in a vote of league coaches.
Duffy (North Riverside, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield), a senior outfielder, was a second-team selection.
Duffy hit .418 for the season, and that ranked second in the Midwest Conference. She posted a .457 on-base percentage, scored 27 runs and swiped 20 bases in 23 tries.
During conference play, Duffy hit .377 and tied for the team high with 17 runs scored while batting in the No. 9 spot in the order. She went 11-for-12 on stolen bases during 20 conference games. Duffy also posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in league play.
Lawrence finished the season with an 18-14-2 record and an 11-8-1 mark in Midwest Conference play.
