Early outburst leads MSOE past Lawrence

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — The Milwaukee School of Engineering men’s soccer team scored two goals in the first 11 minutes and went on to a 4-0 nonconference win over Lawrence University on Wednesday.

The Raiders (2-1-0) scored at 6:55 and 10:26 to jump out to the big early advantage. Marius Prestin then scored in the 36th minute to give the Raiders a 3-0 lead at the half. Prestin added another goal in the second half for the final margin.

Two MSOE goalies combined to make four saves to record the shutout. MSOE held a 16-6 edge in shots.

Vikings shut out by Aurora

AURORA, Ill. — The Aurora University men’s soccer team scored early and went on to a 3-0 nonconference victory over Lawrence University on Sunday.

The Spartans scored in the seventh minute on Jason O’Brien’s goal, which came off a corner kick. Aurora (2-0-0) added goals in the 59th and 79th minutes to seal the victory.

Joe Krivit made four saves for Lawrence (0-2-0), and Chris Donner made two saves for the Spartans. The shots were even at 9-9 in the match.

Luther rallies to down Lawrence 2-1

APPLETON, Wis. — The Luther College men’s soccer team scored two goals in a span of 7:28 to pull out a 2-1 nonconference victory over Lawrence University on Friday at Whiting Field West.

Lawrence (0-1-0) led 1-0 on a spectacular goal from senior Cameron Pieper at the 14:38 mark. Lewis Berger’s free kick traveled about 60 yards in the air, and Pieper volleyed it into the net for the first Vikings’ goal of the season.

That lead held up until Clay Walker scored off an assist from Nigel Nielsen at the 61:29 mark. Lucas Beato then scored off a corner kick from Ben Reasoner at the 68:57 mark to give the Norse (1-0-0) the lead for good.

Joe Krivit made 12 saves for Lawrence, and Tommy Breen picked up the win despite not having to make a save in his 45 minutes of action in the second half.

Lawrence student-athletes honored on academic all-conference team

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University had 165 student-athletes earn Academic All-Midwest Conference honors for 2013-14.

To be eligible for selection, a student-athlete must have a minimum grade point average of 3.3 during the academic year.

The women’s swimming and diving team led Lawrence with 16 student-athletes honored. Lawrence had five other teams that had double-digit selections — women’s outdoor track and field, women’s cross country, women’s indoor track and field, women’s soccer and men’s soccer.

The women’s outdoor track and field team was next with 15 student-athletes honored. Women’s cross country had 13 of its 16 team members chosen, and women’s indoor track and field had 13 selections. Women’s soccer had 10 selections, and women’s tennis saw nine of its 11 student-athletes chosen.

Lawrence’s top men’s team was soccer, which had 10 selections. Men’s golf had seven of its 11 student-athletes chosen.

Lawrence had 64 student-athletes chosen from the fall season, 57 from the winter season and 44 from the spring season.

Lawrence student-athletes receive awards at Honors Celebration

APPLETON, Wis. — Sixteen Lawrence University student-athletes were recently honored at the 2014 Honors Celebration.

The awards and winners are as follows.

The Ruth Bateman Award is given for excellence in scholarship, athletic ability and leadership by a female athlete. Junior Taylor Winter (Bayside, Wis./Nicolet) won the award after completing another stellar season. Winter won the 1,650-yard freestyle and 500 freestyle at the 2014 Midwest Conference Championships and also took the 1,650 title in the Wisconsin Private College Championships. A three-time MWC champion, Winter also holds the school records in both the 1,000 and 1,650 freestyle.

The Iden Charles Champion Cup is given for excellence in scholarship, athletic ability, college spirit and loyalty. Junior Andrew Borresen (West Bend, Wis./Living Word Lutheran) is a reserve on the men’s basketball team and deeply involved in campus life. A member of the Dean’s List and Mortar Board, Borresen has a 3.89 grade point average and is majoring in history. Borresen is set to capture his third consecutive Academic All-Midwest Conference selection. The co-chairman of Lawrence’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Borresen also works in the Lawrence’s sports information office and for the Lawrentian, the student newspaper.

The Outstanding Freshman Athletic Award for Men is given the freshman man who has made the most outstanding contribution to Lawrence athletics. Blake Roubos (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Michael’s) won the award after lettering in two sports during his rookie year at Lawrence. A hockey and tennis standout, Roubos was named to the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association all-freshmen team and was named a NCHA Player of the Week during the season. Roubos led the team in scoring with 26 points on a team-best 16 assists and 10 goals. Roubos recorded his first career hat trick and the first hat trick for a Lawrence player since the 2009-10 season when he scored three times in a 4-2 win over Finlandia University that clinched a berth in the NCHA playoffs. Roubos had a season-best five points and a season-high three assists to go with two goals in Lawrence’s 6-6 nonconference tie with Gustavus Adolphus College early in the season. Roubos was a starter at No. 3 doubles and played matches at No. 6 singles for tennis team. Roubos and Sam Wiener won the consolation title at No. 3 doubles at the Midwest Conference Championships.

The Outstanding Freshman Athletic Award for Women is given to the freshman woman who has made the most outstanding contribution to Lawrence athletics. Amy Hutchings (Ripon, Wis./Ripon) earned the award after earning letters in both cross country and track and field. During the cross country season, Hutchings finished ninth at the Midwest Conference Championships to earn all-conference honors. Hutchings, who is one of just three women in Lawrence history to finish in the conference’s top 10 as a freshman, led Lawrence to a third-place finish at the league meet. Hutchings also competed in multiple distance events in both indoor and outdoor track.

The Ralph V. Landis Award was established by the Lettermen of Lawrence in honor of Dr. Landis, physician to Lawrence students from 1926-78, and is awarded for outstanding contributions to Lawrence athletics by a senior male athlete. Luke Barthelmess (Appleton, Wis./Principia) completed a record-setting career at quarterback for the Lawrence football team. A 2013 All-Midwest Conference selection, Barthelmess completed 193 of 346 passes for 2,133 yards and 14 touchdowns. He finished second in the league at 213.3 passing yards per game. Barthelmess also ran 177 times for 889 yards and two touchdowns. Barthelmess, who averaged 5.0 yards per carry, finished eighth in the conference at 88.9 yards per game. Barthelmess also finished first in the league in total offense at 302.2 yards per game. Barthelmess, who is Lawrence’s career leader in a number of passing categories, completed 648 of 1,181 passes in his career. He threw for a record 8,190 yards and a record 62 touchdown passes. Barthelmess, who was named the MVP at the Bowl of the Stars in Mexico, is the starting quarterback for the Stuttgart Scorpions of the German Football League.

The Charles E. Pond Award for Men is given for all-around athletic ability by a senior man in two or more sports and for sportsmanship, school spirit and scholarship. Dan Thoresen (Verona, Wis./Verona) earned the award after completing a stellar career in cross country and track and field. Thoresen earned All-Midwest Conference honors four times in track and field and was a member of Lawrence’s 2011 conference championship cross country squad. A biology major, Thoresen has a 3.935 grade point average in biology.

The Marion Read Award is given for outstanding contributions to Lawrence athletics. The award had two winners this year as seniors Mary Diduch (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) and Hannah Gabriel (Elmhurst, Ill./York) shared the award. Diduch won four letters in softball and was part of the 2014 and 2014 squads that reached the Midwest Conference Tournament. Diduch also worked as a student manager for the football team and served in a leadership position with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Gabriel was a two-time Midwest Conference champion, taking the title twice in the 200-yard freestyle and setting a meet record in the event. Gabriel also holds the school record in the 200 freestyle and is part of record-holding teams in the 400 medley relay, 400 freestyle relay and 800 freestyle relay.

The Letterwinner Award is presented by the L Club to those outstanding seniors who have earned eight or more letters. The winners are:

Lawrence soccer teams honored again for academic achievement

APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University soccer teams have again been honored for academic excellence by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Both Lawrence teams have received the Team Academic Award for having a cumulative grade point average higher than 3.0 during the 2012-13 academic year.

The Lawrence women, coached by Lisa Sammons, posted a 3.41 grade point average during the year. The Lawrence men, led by long-time coach Blake Johnson, had a 3.29 grade point average.

This marks the ninth consecutive year that both Lawrence teams have earned the award. This is the 12th time since 2000 that the Lawrence women captured the award and it is the 11th time for the Lawrence men during the same period.

The Lawrence men endured an injury-filled year and finished sixth in the Midwest Conference and had a 7-10-1 overall record. The Lawrence women had a 5-10-1 mark and took eighth place in the league

Inside LU Athletics: Vikings receive all-conference accolades

Three Lawrence University football players have been selected for the All-Midwest Conference team.

Quarterback Luke Barthelmess (Appleton, Wis./Principia) and defensive back Sam Wagner (Salem, Wis./Burlington Catholic Central) were both chosen for the second team, and wide receiver Dan Dubnicka (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) received honorable mention.

Wagner was chosen for the all-conference team for the second consecutive year after receiving honorable mention in 2012. Wagner led the squad with 89 tackles, including 8.0 tackles for loss. Wagner, who finished fifth in the conference in tackles per game, also had one interception and six passes defensed. A two-way player, Wagner saw significant action at wide receiver. Wagner finished with 23 catches for 435 yards and two touchdowns. He averaged an impressive 18.9 yards per catch.

Barthelmess was chosen for the all-conference team for the first time while completing a record-setting career at quarterback. Barthelmess completed 193 of 346 passes for 2,133 yards and 14 touchdowns. He finished second in the league at 213.3 passing yards per game.

Barthelmess also ran 177 times for 889 yards and two touchdowns. Barthelmess, who averaged 5.0 yards per carry, finished eighth in the conference at 88.9 yards per game. Barthelmess also finished first in the league in total offense at 302.2 yards per game. Barthelmess climbed to ninth in Lawrence history with 1,819 rushing yards.

Barthelmess, who is Lawrence’s career leader in a number of passing categories, completed 648 of 1,181 passes in his career. He finished fourth in conference history with 8,190 passing yards. Barthelmess’ 62 touchdown passes ranks seventh in league history.

Dubnicka was honored on the all-conference team for the first time. Dubnicka caught 49 passes for 662 yards and four touchdowns. He finished fourth in the conference at 4.9 catches per game and was fifth in the league at 66.2 receiving yards per game.

Deremo, Salansky picked

Men’s soccer standouts Stephen Salansky and Michael Deremo have been named to the All-MWC team.

Salansky (Parker, Colo./Legend), a junior defender, and Deremo (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township), a freshman forward, were both chosen for the second team.

Salansky has been selected for the all-conference team in both of his seasons at Lawrence. He was a first-team selection in 2012. Salansky picked up goals against both Beloit College and Monmouth College, which were both Lawrence victories, and had an assist in the Vikings’ win over Cornell College. He finished the season with five points.

Deremo led the Vikings in goals, assists and points during his rookie season. Deremo scored five goals and picked up seven assists for 17 points. Deremo’s seven assists is the second-highest season total in Lawrence history. James Kimball set the record of eight assists back in 1987.

M&M are all-conference

Women’s soccer standouts Keli Muchowski and Casey Merkle were both chosen for the All-MWC team.

Muchowski (Neenah, Wis./Neenah), a junior forward, was named to the second team, and Merkle (Barrington, Ill./Barrington), a freshman midfielder, received honorable mention.

Muchowski was named to the second team for the second consecutive season. She led Lawrence in goals and points. Muchowski scored nine goals and picked up one assist for 19 points and recorded her first career hat trick in Lawrence’s 3-1 victory at Knox College.

Merkle quickly became the team’s playmaker during her rookie season. She scored three goals and picked up a team-high five assists for 11 points.

Swimming power

The Lawrence swim teams recently took part in the Ted Mullin Hour of Power Relay. The Hour of Power is a cancer research fundraiser in which Lawrence participates every year.

Over the first seven years of this event, the Hour of Power has raised more than $410,000 to support research at the University of Chicago into the causes and treatment of sarcoma, a rare soft-tissue cancer, in young people.

First started to honor former Carleton College swimmer Ted Mullin, who passed away in the fall of 2006 from sarcoma, the Hour of Power has grown from 15 teams in its first year to 171 teams in 2012 with 8,300 participating athletes.

Classroom stars

Deremo’s seven assists is the second-highest season total in Lawrence history. James Kimball set the record of eight assists back in 1987.

Lawrence, which was ravaged by injury during the season, finished with an overall record of 7-10-1 and tied for sixth in the conference with a 5-5-0 mark.

Foresters shut out Lawrence 3-0

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Mahir Mameledzija scored a pair of goals to seal the victory as the Lake Forest College men’s soccer team defeated Lawrence University 3-0 in a Midwest Conference game on Saturday at Farwell Field.

Alexi Spiratos gave Lake Forest (12-6-0, 9-1-0 MWC) the early lead with a goal just 6:00 into the match. Mameledzija then scored at 67:20 and 68:36 to seal the win.

The Foresters were forced to make just one save to earn the shutout as Lawrence was limited to only two shots.

Seniors lead Vikings past Cornell

APPLETON, Wis. — It was Senior Day at Lawrence University on Sunday as the Vikings said farewell to seven men’s soccer players. The seniors made the most of the their final home game by scoring all three goals in a 3-0 Midwest Conference victory over Cornell College.

Erich Lohrmann scored twice and Cooper Sinai-Yunker got the other goal for the Vikings (7-9-1, 5-4-0 MWC).

Freshman goalkeeper Joe Krivit made one save to earn his fifth shutout of the season. Connor Hagen stopped 13 shots for Cornell, which had just one shot on goal.

Lohrmann got the scoring started at the 4:34 mark when he took a throw-in from Stephen Salansky and fired a shot past Hagen.

Lawrence made it 2-0 at the 10:21 mark as Lohrmann scored again. Michael Deremo took the ball into the box and his shot was deflected by Hagen. Lohrmann pounced on the rebound and stuffed it into the back of the net.

Sinai-Yunker scored his first career goal off a pass from Lohrmann at the 56:17 mark to complete the scoring.
