Sophomore Kathleen Baudendistel Wins Second Straight State Singing Competition

For the second year in a row, Kathleen Baudendistel earned first-place honors in her division at the annual Wisconsin chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) competition held Nov. 7-8 at Viterbo University in La Crosse.

Baudendistel, of Farmersville, Ohio, won the sophomore women’s division after winning the freshman women’s division last year. Elizabeth Burmeister of Chicago, placed second in the same division. Baudendistel and Burmeister are students in the voice studios of Ken Bozeman, Frank C. Shattuck Professor of Music, and Joanne Bozeman, instructor of music, respectively.

Six of Lawrence’s 23 entries advanced to the finals in the competition, which drew nearly 400 singers from around the state. First-place finishers receive $150, while second- and third-place finishers received $125 and $100, respectively.

The NATS competition features 22 separate divisions grouped by gender and level. Depending upon the category, competitors are required to sing two, three or four classical pieces from different time periods with at least one selection sung in a foreign language.

Three Students Win Titles at State Singing Competition

Three Lawrence University students won their division at the 2013 Wisconsin chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) competition held Nov. 1-2 at UW-Stevens Point.

Katy Harth, Naperville, Ill., earned first-place honors in the women’s Upper College Music Theater division and third-place honors in the senior women’s division.

Ian Grimshaw, Afton, Va., and Kathleen Baudendistel, Farmersville, Ohio, joined Harth in the winner’s circle, earning first-place honors in the freshman men and women’s divisions, respectively.

Harth is a student in the voice studio of Associate Professor Karen Leigh-Post, while Grimshaw and Baudendistel both study in the studio of Professor Ken Bozeman.

A total of 20 Lawrence students participated in the competition with nine of them advancing to the finals. In addition to the three winners, four students earned second-place honors with one third and one fourth-place finisher as well. The first-place finishers each received $150 for their winning efforts, while second- and third-place finishers received $125 and $100, respectively.

The 2013 auditions drew nearly 400 singers from around the state. The competition features 22 separate divisions grouped by gender and level. Depending upon the category, NATS competitors are required to sing two, three or four classical pieces from different time periods with at least one selection sung in a foreign language.

Five Lawrence University Students Win State Titles at Annual NATS Competition

Tory Wood won her third consecutive state title and Ian Koziara won his second straight as Lawrence University claimed five first-place finishers at the 2012 Wisconsin chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) competition held Nov. 2-3 at UW-Whitewater.

Wood, of Escanaba, Mich., shared first-place honors with classmate Anna Valcour, Burr Ridge, Ill., in the senior women’s division. Both are students of Joanne Bozeman.  Koziara, Wheaton, Ill., won the junior men’s division.  He studies in the voice studio of Steven Spears.

Also earning first-place awards in their respective divisions were Garrett Medlock, Bloomington, Ill., freshman men and Luke Randall, Edina, Minn., senior men. Medlock and Randall are students of Spears and Kenneth Bozeman, respectively.

Forty-seven Lawrence students participated in the competition with 16 of them advancing to the finals. In addition to the five winners, five Lawrence students earned second-place honors and five were awarded third place. The first-place finishers each received $150 for their winning efforts, while second- and third-place finishers received $125 and $100, respectively.

Wood, of Escanaba, Mich., was one of four Lawrence students awarded first-place honors. She won the junior women’s division after winning the sophomore division in 2010.

Also earning first-place awards in their respective divisions were Max Kligman, Mill Valley, Calif.,  freshman men; Ian Koziara, Wheaton, Ill., sophomore men and Katy Harth, Naperville, Ill., upper level music theatre.

Six Students Earn Top Honors in State Singing Competition

Highlighted by Evan Bravos’ second straight state title, six Lawrence University students earned first-place honors at the 2010 Wisconsin chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) competition held Nov. 5-6 at UW-Milwaukee.

Bravos, of St. Charles, Ill, won the men’s Upper Level Music Theater Division, after winning the senior men’s division in 2009.

Also winning their respective divisions were Alex York, Muskego, freshman men; Tory Wood, Escanaba, Mich., sophomore women; Luke Randall, Edina, Minn., sophomore men; Rachel Graber, St. Paul, Minn., junior women; and Ally Kunath, Park Ridge, Ill., junior women.

Thirteen of Lawrence’s 61 student entries advanced to the competition finals. In addition to the six winners, four Lawrence students earned second-place honors and two were awarded third place. The first-place finishers each received $150 for their winning efforts, while second- and third-place finishers received $125 and $100, respectively.
