Tuition Benefit programs

If you have a dependent applying to college for the 2021-22 academic year, this message is for you!

If you will be applying to any (or all!) of the tuition benefit programs Lawrence offers to dependents of employees, now is the time to start the tuition benefit application process.  Please see information about LU Tuition Remission, ACM Tuition Remission, and the National Tuition Exchange on the LU Financial Aid office’s website (https://www.lawrence.edu/info/offices/financial-aid/tuition_benefits).  We strongly recommend new tuition benefit applications be submitted by December 1.

If you have a dependent attending college on either the ACM Tuition Remission or National Tuition Exchange programs for 2020-21, the LU Financial Aid office will be in contact with you in December regarding the process to recertify the benefit for 2021-22 if your dependent will be a continuing student next year.

Please email Laura.B.Zuege@Lawrence.edu or Financial.Aid@Lawrence.edu if you have questions.

Seeking Faculty, Staff and Student volunteers to escort people to the Polls on November 3rd

Helping people get to polling locations on election day is critical for increasing voter engagement.  We are seeking Lawrence Community members to volunteer on November 3rd to walk with students to the campus polling location, which is just a few blocks from campus at Memorial Presbyterian Church, 803 E. College Ave.

If you are able to volunteer to be on campus between 7am and 8pm on November 3rd please email curt.lauderdale@lawrence.eduwith your name and the times you would be available to walk with student to the polls.  A schedule will then be developed and shared with the volunteers and student voters.

Reminder to Get Registered to Vote!

Lawrence is trying to make that process as seamless as possible for students living on campus. Lawrence voter ID cards are available free of charge in the Warch Campus Center and the University has already provided a certified housing list to the Appleton city clerk’s office. A voter registration table is set up in Warch from now through Oct. 13, allowing students to get their voter ID card and fill out a voter registration form all at the same time. Those forms will then be collected and delivered to the city clerk’s office. It doesn’t get any easier than that.

Information on voter registration in Wisconsin, including a registration form, can be found at https://myvote.wi.gov/en-us/. If you can’t register at Warch, these are your options:

Register in person at city clerk’s office: It’s located in City Hall, on the west end of City Centre. The office is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Deadline is Oct. 30. You’ll need your voter ID card.

Register at the polls on Nov. 3: You’ll need proof of residence as well as your photo ID (this will be provided by Lawrence for students living on campus). Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Register by mail: You can send your completed and signed registration form along with proof of residence to the Appleton city clerk’s office, 100 N. Appleton Street, Appleton WI 54911, as long as it is postmarked by Oct. 14.

Register online: Go to https://myvote.wi.gov/en-us/. Deadline is Oct. 14.

More information about voting in Appleton can be found here.

If you registered to vote in a previous year, you’re encouraged to check your registration status at https://myvote.wi.gov/en-us/. If you’ve changed residence halls on campus since spring, you need to re-register. And when registering to vote, you will need to know the physical address of your campus housing. You can find campus addresses here.

Equipment Access

  • Equipment use and checkout is solely available to those enrolled in production classes this term (FIST 318 and FIST 240/ ART 240) and senior film students working on their capstone project.
  • Check your course materials for info on what equipment is assigned to your class.
  • Please pack and return your equipment exactly the way it was given to you, with all batteries charged, and as early as possible, as there may always be someone waiting to use it after you.
  • There are no exceptions to these limited access rules this term.

  • Please report any missing or faulty equipment immediately so we can make the necessary repairs.
  • In any case, the student in who checked the equipment out is responsible if the items are late, damaged, or lost.

Late, Damaged, or Missing Equipment

  • Once you sign out equipment, you are responsible for that equipment, and liable for all repair and/or replacement costs if that equipment is lost, damaged, or stolen– so use good judgment!
  • Returns are also scheduled by appointment, so be sure to return your equipment on time.

Editing Lab Access

  • All students enrolled in a production class will have 24-hour keycard building access to the Hurvis Center, and spaces used for class time. Access to editing stations are based on reservation and an honor system. Limited only to those enrolled in production classes this term (FIST 318 and FIST 240/ ART 240) and senior film students working on their capstone project.

  • This term we are implementing a new reservation system for each accessible editing computer in the Hurvis Center. You may only enter a lab if you have a reservation. You will receive the share link to it from your respective professor or you can request the link by contacting José. (not SISO).
  • This reservation system is made up of google spreadsheets that will be shared with you to edit in your reservations. Each week for the term has its own spreadsheet. Opening each document will first show you “Monday”, if you look at the tabs at the bottom you can select which day of the week you would like to set your reservation on. Listed within each day are all of the usable editing stations.
  • Each reservation slot is one hour. Simply type your full name to reserve a time slot. You may only sign up for four consecutive hours per day, and twenty hours per week; unless it is within the two hour window of a time slot and no one has taken it, then you are open to typing your name in and using that time slot. If you make an initial reservation, but have to cancel, please remove your name from the slot so someone else may take that time slot.
  • Be respectful of your use of our facilities. Be mindful of the time you have a station reserved for and leave the room no later than five minutes before your time is up, someone will likely be waiting for their turn. If an incident occurs where someone is reluctant to give up your reserved work station, please reach out to Jose Lozano to discuss what occurred. Again, please cancel reservations if you suddenly find that you will not be coming in at that time. We will not tolerate unfair uses of our facilities and such incidents may result in editing lab privileges being suspended or revoked.
  • If you encounter any technical issues with the editing stations, please note the room, computer number, and nature of the problem (screenshots are helpful) and email or text it to our Program Support Coordinator, José, at lozanoj@lawrence.edu or (920) 277-6324 .

EditShare and Media Storage

  • All students enrolled in a production class are automatically allocated class and/ or individual media storage spaces on the Film Studies EditShare server, which can be accessed from all stations in the Hurvis Center editing labs.
  • Students are encouraged to frequently back up all files stored on EditShare to a personal hard drive formatted for Macs.
  • All files stored on EditShare will be cleared one week after the end of the academic year, unless a student fills out a space renewal form by the posted deadline.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email José at lozanoj@lawrence.edu

Humans of Lawrence University

The world could use some authenticity right now. So we want to tell your stories. Your real stories. That’s why we’re starting a Humans of Lawrence University series on social media.

This campus is full of thoughtful, quirky, lovely people. We are looking for micro-stories – tales of a moment or a window into something specific about you – that get to the heart of who we are and how we live and what we care about. We’re finding new ways to be in community this year, and we want to share the authentic and true stories of the people in our community to help us all feel closer and more connected. We want to use Lawrence’s social media channels to shine light not just on our greatest triumphs and successes, but also on the stories of real lives.

We think there’s power and beauty in regular things, too, and we’re asking for your help to share those moments, practices, relationships. The key is to be specific. We all connect more with a specific story or example than with a general statement.

So tell us something about you. There’s no pressure here to tell an incredible, impressive story. Just be you and tell us about you.

Take a look at these prompts and answer as many as you like. Write like you’d speak (not concerned with perfect grammar) and use first-person point-of-view (I, me, we, us). You can expect Communications to follow up via email for further elaboration, revisions for length, or confirmation.

The winning entry will become a printed poster to be hung around campus and will be shared as a post on Lawrence’s social media during the Fall Term.

The creator of the winning entry will receive $50 Viking Gold. (If a team submits the winning poster, the prize will be divided among them evenly.)
