Open Forums on the Higher Ed Landscape and Lawrence’s Way Forward

Dear Colleagues,

Many of you may be reading about or are familiar with the current dynamics of the higher education landscape: shifting demographics, increased competition for new students, and the resulting pressures on college enrollment and finances.

But perhaps fewer of you may be familiar with what that means for Lawrence and our response, including how we can work together as faculty and staff colleagues to sustain our momentum in this environment.

To that end, we are hosting two open forums led by Ken Anselment, vice president for enrollment and communication, to learn more about the current environment in which we work and the university’s response. Jenna Stone, associate vice president for finance, will also share updates on efforts to reach sustained financial equilibrium.

Please join us for:

We encourage you to read these in advance of the forums, as they will provide you with a more robust understanding of the university’s response to our current environment. Please also feel free to bring questions regarding the priorities to the forums.

We look forward to seeing you at one (or both) of the sessions.

Welcome Multimedia Specialist Danny Damiani!

We are excited to welcome the newest member to Lawrence’s Communications team, Danny Damiani, who joins us this week as our new multimedia specialist.

Danny comes to us from The Post-Crescent, Appleton’s daily newspaper, where he has served as a staff photographer since May 2015. In his role, Danny created award-winning videos and photos, covering the Appleton and Fox Cities communities with honesty and compassion (his portfolio is worth a look). And for the Packers fans in the LU community, Danny served as a mobile camera operator on “Clubhouse Live,” the weekly Packers livestream from Downton Appleton. He holds a bachelor of arts in journalism, concentration in photojournalism, from Eastern Illinois University.

As multimedia specialist, Danny will work closely with Garrett Katerzynske, director of video production, and Mackenzie Huber, social media and web content specialist, to produce engaging video, photography, and other digital assets that will enhance the University’s social media and web presence. Danny’s creativity, journalism background, familiarity with Appleton and the Fox Cities, and excitement for visual storytelling make him an ideal match for this new position.

In his role, Danny will be a visible presence on campus, covering campus events, capturing campus life, and profiling members of the Lawrence community. Please be sure to say hello when you see him around campus.

Energy Audit of University Buildings

Lawrence has hired Johnson Controls to do an energy audit on campus.  The audit began on Tuesday, May 21, and will continue over the next few weeks. The following buildings are currently being audited:

Academy of Music
Alex Gym
Briggs Hall
Brokaw Hall
Buchanan-Kiewit Wellness Center
Chapman Hall
Conservatory West
Facility Services
Main Hall
Memorial Chapel
Memorial Hall
Music Drama
Seeley G. Mudd Library
Shattuck Hall
Steitz Hall
Warch Campus Center
Wriston Art Center
Youngchild Hall

If you work in one of these 18 buildings, please note that you may see employees of Johnson Controls walking through hallways, rooms, and offices. The University has given them permission to check every room in buildings if needed, and they can be identified by their Johnson Controls lanyard.  While they do need to access every room, they understand and respect that class is still in session and the business of learning is our first priority; they will work around classes, labs, meetings, etc. and will make every effort to avoid disrupting our activities.

Lighting data loggers (see image below) are also being installed in these buildings for 2-3 weeks. These loggers will be gathering baseline numbers on how and when our buildings are in use, for annual energy savings calculations. Please do not tamper with the loggers.
