Author Discussion with Ernestine Whitman

Ernestine Whitman, a flute professor on the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music faculty for 33 years before retiring in 2011, will share her recently written memoir Countermelodies: A Memoir in Sonata Form. In the book, she explores a harrowing time in her life, when unrelenting psychological harassment for a teacher-turned-colleague in Atlanta threatened to unravel her dreams for a musical life.

Ernestine Whitman began her career as a professional flutist at age 20, making her the youngest member of the Atlanta Symphony. Her passion for teaching brought her to Lawrence University, where she was professor of flute for 33 years.

A passionate advocate for restorative justice, she volunteers frequently in programs at several Wisconsin prisons.

Ernestine and her husband, Howard Niblock, divide their time between their condo in midtown Atlanta and their longtime residence in Appleton.

Set in 1977 Seville, at a time homosexuality was a crime in Spain, the plot follows Reme and her son Miguel (a wannabe singer and performer) who become acquainted with the budding Andalusian LGBTI movement.

After some time living in Melilla, Alegría rediscovers her Jewish roots in the wake of the wedding of her niece Yael. The film explores the blending of culture, identity, religion, and family.

Celebrating the Life of Professor Chong-do Hah

The family of Professor Hah invites the Lawrence community to join them in a celebration of his life.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks to consider making a donation in his memory to the Mojmir Povolny and Chong-do Hah Library Fund at Lawrence.

Fall WELLU Massages

Wellness Services is pleased to offer subsidized full-body therapeutic massage services for fall term. We added a second massage therapist for on campus massages.

Appointments are available for 50 minute table massages and cost is $30 on campus and $35 at the YMCA.

Massages are available for all students and employees just once per term.

You must sign up to be eligible for the discounted price. E-mail Erin Buenzli to schedule an appointment. Limit one per term.
