Update on Print Services

Print Services will be closed until July 7.

If you have print or copy projects that do not require design services, such as letters or manuals, please submit the job as normal through the print services form. If you have any questions about your job, contact the Helpdesk at Helpdesk@lawrence.edu. 

If you need design or other assistance from the Office of Communications, please continue to submit your request through the project initiation form. Please also allow for at least an additional three days of turn-around time on projects due to potential changes in the printing process.

Lawrence makes residence hall available to city in COVID-19 fight

Lawrence University is donating the use of Trever Hall to the City of Appleton for the next four months to help in the fight against the spread of COVID-19.

Trever is being made available to the city from now until the end of August. It will not be used as a medical facility and will not house COVID-19 patients, but rather will be a space the city can utilize for its personnel as needed.

“All of us are in this fight together,” said Christyn Abaray, assistant to the Lawrence president.

“Providing Trever Hall to our city is a natural step we at Lawrence could take to support our community in this effort.”

No Lawrence students or staff will be in the building. The university has cleaned and prepped the hall and made key-access available to city personnel. The city will provide its own bedding and will be responsible for the ongoing cleaning of the facility. City personnel staying in the hall will have access to the kitchen and laundry facilities, and free wi-fi is being provided.

Trever is well removed from where students on campus during spring term are being housed.

“We purposefully chose a residence hall where there would be limited interaction with our own campus community,” Abaray said.

Submit Clip for the Spring Term Welcome Back Video

Help us kick off Spring Term with a video reminder that Lawrence continues to be a community, even if we’re temporarily spread across the globe. Submit a short video message from your home workspace welcoming your fellow Lawrentians to Spring Term. Clips from faculty, staff, students, and alumni will be cut together to make one long welcome video. Submit your video by 11:59 PM CDT on Wednesday, April 1.

To submit the clip, you’ll have to log into your OneDrive account. Sign in with your shortened LU email address (last name+first initial @lawrence.edu) and your network password.

Instructions:

  1. If using a phone, film the video horizontally (tip your phone on the side instead of up-and-down). Feel free to use a webcam, as well.
  2. Start with a hello and your name
  3. Tell us where you are
  4. Follow with a short message to welcome everyone back and kick off Spring Term

Details:

  • Videos do not have to be highly produced. Selfie video on a cell phone or using a webcam is perfect.
  • Have fun with it. Don’t be afraid to be original and show your personality.
  • Keep the video clips short: 5-20 seconds is ideal, 1 minute maximum.
  • Your entire clip may not be included.

Set Go is a Contact Improvisation Research and Performance ensemble founded in 2016 by dancers Shura Baryshnikov, Aaron Brando, Paul Singh, Bradley Teal Ellis, and Sarah Konner. Though all are interdisciplinary artists, each identifies Contact Improvisation as a primary practice and are lead researchers and educators in the field, both nationally and internationally. Collectively, Set Go has been practicing the form of Contact Improvisation for over 60 years and shares a love for whimsical, whole-hearted, virtuosic improvisation. Working from overlapping histories of improvisational practice, the collective frames the play between real-time composition and Contact Improvisation in performance. They have been dance-making together since 2009. 

Our own fabulous Matt Turner, Mark Urness, and Loren Dempster will be improvising music with them.

About the Set Go dancers: 
Sarah Konner is a dance artist, improviser, and Somatic Movement Educator based in Brooklyn, NY. She teaches dance at Smith College where she is also a current MFA candidate. 

Shura Baryshnikov is the Head of Physical Theatre for the Brown/Trinity Rep MFA Programs in Acting and Directing at Brown University. An actor as well as a dancer, Shura works broadly across disciplines as a performer and also a choreographer and movement designer for dance, theater, and opera. 

Bradley Teal Ellis is a Brooklyn based dance artist and improviser. He currently teaches at NYU/Tisch, the Conservatory of Dance at Purchase College and Movement Research in addition to traveling to offer workshops in Contact Improvisation. 

Paul Singh earned his degree in dance from a great university, has danced for talented choreographers, and makes his own challenging work. He currently teaches at Sarah Lawrence College, Movement Research, and The Juilliard School. 

Aaron Brando, M.Ed, loves the art of crafting pedagogy in a non-codified system such as Contact Improvisation and has taught workshops and intensives throughout North America as well as internationally. He is honored to have shared the stage with Nancy Stark Smith, Chris Aiken, and Angie Hauser among others; he has also trained in Anatomy Trains Structural Integration and is a certified SI practitioner with practices in Northampton and Boston.

Great Midwest Trivia Contest

This year’s Great Midwest Trivia Contest will begin on Friday, Jan. 24 at 10:00:37PM and ends at midnight on Sunday, Jan. 26.

Welcome Multimedia Specialist Danny Damiani!

We are excited to welcome the newest member to Lawrence’s Communications team, Danny Damiani, who joins us this week as our new multimedia specialist. 

Danny comes to us from The Post-Crescent, Appleton’s daily newspaper, where he has served as a staff photographer since May 2015. In his role, Danny created award-winning videos and photos, covering the Appleton and Fox Cities communities with honesty and compassion (his portfolio is worth a look). And for the Packers fans in the LU community, Danny served as a mobile camera operator on “Clubhouse Live,” the weekly Packers livestream from Downton Appleton. He holds a bachelor of arts in journalism, concentration in photojournalism, from Eastern Illinois University.  

As multimedia specialist, Danny will work closely with Garrett Katerzynske, director of video production, and Mackenzie Huber, social media and web content specialist, to produce engaging video, photography, and other digital assets that will enhance the University’s social media and web presence. Danny’s creativity, journalism background, familiarity with Appleton and the Fox Cities, and excitement for visual storytelling make him an ideal match for this new position. 

In his role, Danny will be a visible presence on campus, covering campus events, capturing campus life, and profiling members of the Lawrence community. Please be sure to say hello when you see him around campus.  

A Call for Doggo Pictures

Yes, you read that correctly. Communications needs pictures of your puppers and doggos showing their Lawrence spirit. International Dog Day is fast approaching, and we’d love to highlight the dogs of Lawrence on social media that day. So, snap some photos of your good bois and good girls on campus or wearing Lawrence attire and send them our way!

FRAMES! FRAMES! FRAMES!

We have put a bunch of unneeded frames from the art collection in the Wriston Art Center Lobby – free for the taking!
Wood and metal frames, various colors and sizes, some with glass/plexi, some without. Come check them out through Sept. 6th
The galleries staff will be happy to give advice on using the frames but we can’t provide mats or other framing supplies. Email Beth Zinsli (beth.a.zinsli@lawrence.edu) with questions. 

Campus Closed Monday – FAQ

Facility Services will be conducting maintenance on the University’s electrical transformers from Saturday, August 3, through Monday, August 5. Campus power will be shut down on Saturday, August 3, until power is restored during the day on Monday. As a result, the campus will be closed on Monday, August 5. 

To help you prepare, here’s a quick FAQ regarding the outage and closure.

Is my building affected?

There will be no power to the following buildings:

Backup generators will be supporting critical technical and scientific equipment. No other power or generator support can be provided, and ALL refrigerators in these buildings must be emptied before the weekend.

Am I being paid for Monday’s closure?

YES. Employees will be paid for their full regularly scheduled hours that day. Employees paid on an hourly basis should enter their regularly scheduled hours into the Paid Time Off line on their timesheets. No timesheet adjustments are required for salaried employees.

Please note that student employees who are regularly scheduled to work on Monday will not be paid for the hours missed.

How should I prepare for Monday’s closure?

Before leaving the office on Friday, all refrigerators (and freezers!) should be emptied of their contents. Please make sure all window unit air conditioners are turned off and power down all computers and electronic devices completely.

Surely there’s something else to share?

There is! During the outage, a minor renovation of the first floor carpeted areas in Brokaw will occur. HR and Payroll will be in the ITC in the Mudd Library on Tuesday, August 6, and the Title IX office will be available via email.

Summer Exhibition in the Wriston Art Galleries

Artist & Collector: La Vera Pohl

Open Friday, July 12 – Sunday, August 18

La Vera Pohl was a Milwaukee art historian, artist, and collector who studied in Germany in the 1920s and 1930s. She collected around 220 prints, paintings, and drawings by early 20th-century German artists at a time when most Americans were unaware of modern German art. This exhibition will feature highlights from Lawrence University’s Pohl Collection of German Expressionism as well as some of Pohl’s own paintings and papers. 

The Wriston Summer Exhibitions are an annual series in the Wriston Art Galleries intended to engage the Fox Valley community in a conversation about artworks and artists of the Midwest.
