New crosswalk cameras on College Avenue designed to improve pedestrian safety

In an effort to improve personal safety, Lawrence University, in collaboration with the city of Appleton, has acquired and is installing high-definition cameras on the two crosswalks on College Ave. in the middle of campus.

The high-definition cameras will be mounted in the median behind the pedestrian crossing signs and will be able to capture a higher level of detail at the crossings to assist the Appleton Police Department in an investigation should an incident arise.

Captured video information will be stored for 72 hours – the same as all other traffic cameras within the city – and is only reviewed if needed for evidence in an accident or harassment incident.

Lawrence is covering the purchase cost of the cameras while the city will oversee the cameras installation. The city also will manage maintenance of the cameras and all data captured by them.

“The mid-College Ave. crosswalks have seen a number of pedestrian-vehicle incidents over the years,” said Jon Meyer, Lawrence’s director of campus safety and director of campus services. “The safety and well-being of members of the Lawrence community is our highest priority and these new cameras will help us identify vehicles involved in crosswalk accidents as well as verbal harassment.”

In Oct. 2013, Lawrence student Shannon Grant sustained serious injuries in a hit-and-run incident while crossing the westbound lane of College Ave. in the crosswalk in front of the Lawrence Memorial Chapel. The case has never been solved. However, this new technology should significantly aid in any future investigations.

Students, faculty and staff should continue to be careful when crossing College Avenue.

Personal Health Assessment Registration Reminder

Personal Health Assessment (PHA) Registration is Now Open

What is a PHA?

The Personal Health Assessment is a tool that highlights how our lifestyle choices directly impact overall health. Two scores are provided:

  • Your Lifestyle Rating is based on your self-reported daily habits related to nutrition, physical activity, alcohol consumption, stress and depression, and tobacco use.
  • Your Biometric Score is based on tobacco use, Body Mass Index (BMI), blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and blood sugar.

The Personal Health Assessment Report provides personalized feedback, tips to improve your lifestyle habits, and resources for more information.

Who is eligible to participate?

All staff and faculty are welcomed and encouraged to participate in the PHA process.  Participation is also encouraged for the following individuals covered under the Lawrence University medical plan: spouses/domestic partners of employees, retirees and spouses/domestic partners of retirees.

Note for Medical Plan Participants

Participation by employees, retirees covered under the medical plan, and spouses/domestic partners covered under the medical plan will provide the discounts to the medical plan premium.  All participants must complete both the biometric screening and the lifestyle questionnaire to receive the premium discount. The questionnaire can be completed 5 days after your biometric screening appointment.

Friday Lunches Live – Starting September 15th

Meant to complement the Fourth Friday topic centered lunch, this invite is less formal and with no set agenda or topic. Bring your own lunch or snack on something from the Center for Spiritual and Religious Life kitchen such as PB&J or Grilled Cheese, and have a casual lunch with your peers that is separate from student involvement. It’s a ‘make your own experience’ at the Center for SRL, Fridays at noon when classes are in session. Open to staff and faculty.

Fourth Friday Soup and Salad Resumes – September 22nd

The Fourth Friday Soup and Salad for staff and faculty is returning this academic year. Please join us at noon at the Center for Spiritual and Religious Life (SRL) on the fourth Friday of the month while classes are in session, to discuss a topic for consideration which will help you consider your own outlook both on and off campus. Take a moment to connect with the people you work with both directly and indirectly, and see the staff and faculty you may have been missing.

Soup and Salad will be provided by the Center for SRL.

Fourth Friday Lunches for the fall term will be held as follows:
September 22nd, October 27th, and November 17th (3rd Friday due to break)
