Internal Communications

Derald Wing Sue Addresses “Microaggressions in Everyday Life” on August 18

Microaggressions are the everyday verbal, nonverbal and environmental slights, snubs or insults, whether intentional or unintentional which communicate hostile, derogatory or negative messages to target persons based solely upon their marginalized group membership.

The most detrimental forms of microaggressions are usually delivered by well-intentioned individuals who are unaware that they have engaged in harmful conduct toward a socially devalued group.

This keynote address will show how microaggressions are manifested in institutions of higher learning, and how it impacts students, staff, faculty and administrators from socially devalued groups in our society.

Registration is FREE for faculty, staff and students.

In Memoriam: Joseph Hopfensperger ’52

Dear Lawrence Family,

I wish to share with you the news that Joseph Allen Hopfensperger ‘52 passed away on July 12.  Joe was a long-time contributor to Lawrence and to the Appleton community. In his many years of connection with Lawrence, Joe served as director of industrial placement, director of the radio station, professor of theatre and drama, administrative assistant to the president, resident director of Björklunden, honorary degree recipient, convocation lecturer and more. Joe’s obituary can be found here—it shares more details about his extraordinary life, which has so enriched our collective life.

Over the more than 70 years of Joe’s connection with Lawrence, many have arrived and scattered to places across the globe. Yet having touched, our lives are linked together. Lawrence University is committed to sharing our losses and celebrating our connections in many ways. Funeral information for those who are in the area can be found here.
