Were you a First Generation student?

“Were you a First Generation student – first in your immediate family to pursue a four-year higher education degree? Would you be interested in being of support to our first generation students throughout their time at Lawrence?

If your answer to both of these questions is yes, contact Rose Wasielewski, Associate Dean of Students and Dean of the Sophomore Class, at rose.wasielewski@lawrence.edu to indicate your interest. Your name will be added to a catalog of faculty and staff who also identify as first gen students. Those who do will get pins and door signs that they can choose to sport for students to easily recognize who their extra supports are.

Thanks for your support of this population, regardless of whether you self-identify in this way. First generation students come to us typically with less knowledge about how the system of higher education works and may need to ask more questions or more clarifying questions – however they may not always feel comfortable doing so because they do not want to appear “behind” in some way to their peers. Your support in taking an extra step to explain a process or procedure further may help ensure everyone is understanding the expectations of them as students or how to navigate a situation.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Rose at rose.wasielewski@lawrence.edu, 920-832-7203, or her office room 203 in Raymond House.”
