Drew Street to close beginning May 31

Construction on the Drew Street foot bridge is scheduled to take place this summer.  As a result, the City of Appleton will be closing Drew Street beginning May 31, 2022, and it will remain closed until September. The Brokaw parking lot will continue to be accessible from Drew Street but the lower level lot near the tennis courts will not.  The footbridge itself will remain open until the day after Commencement, June 13, 2022.

Applying for a grant?

Dear Faculty and Staff,

As we begin to wind down the academic year and think about the summer season ahead, the grants office invites you to work with us on your proposal ideas for external grant funding. Please note that all grant applications must be approved via the grants office prior to submission. In addition to helping your proposal be more competitive, this requirement ensures that the proposed budget is accurate and that there are no compliance or implementation issues in your application.

Please reach out to us as soon as you start thinking about applying for grant funding. We are eager to hear about your proposal ideas and set up a time to meet.

The earlier you contact us in the process, the better! We can help you identify potential donors, interpret proposal guidelines, develop your proposal narrative, create an accurate budget, identify sources of institutional cost share, advise on grantsmanship, provide supporting documentation, and assist with final submission.

We do request a minimum of 30 days’ notice in advance of the deadline. Please provide even more advance notice if you intend to apply for government funding, since federal proposals can require several months of preparation.

The grants team—Anna Beno, Ariela Rosa, and I—look forward to working with you!

Warm Regards,

Amy Kester, Executive Director of Corporate, Foundation, and Sponsored Research Support—Lawrence University

Sole Burner 5K to take place near campus on Saturday

SOLE BURNER SATURDAY MORNING, MAY 7th

This year’s 40h annual American Cancer Society Sole Burner 5K walk/run will be taking place on Saturday morning, May 7th at City Park. We will be using our “traditional” course utilizing the College Avenue Bridge. Streets on the route will likely be blocked off starting at around 8:55. a.m. Walkers and runners will start out from City Park at 9:00 a.m. and it is our expectation that all walkers will be past the bridge by 9:40. Streets on the route will likely open before that time when the last walker goes by. Note that streets directly around City Park will be blocked off earlier.

For those of you in the Lawrence area south of College, it is a bit deceiving since Lawe Street is open and there is access to Lawe Street from Alton Street, but E. South River will be closed until about 9:50. Listed below are expected closed times.

  1. 1)  College Avenue Bridge – 8:50 until 9:40 (eastbound is open to Rankin)
  2. 2)  Lawe/E. South River – 9:00 until 9:50
  3. 3)  Lawe/Franklin – 8:55 until 9:20 (after opening, you can take Lawe north out of downtown)
  4. 4)  E. South Island/Olde Oneida and Eagle Flats Parkway/Olde Oneida – 8:55 until 10:10
  5. 5)  College/Drew – 8:55 until 10:20, you may be allowed west via College until about 9:10
  6. 6)  Washington/Drew – you may be allowed west via Washington until about 9:10.
  7. 7)  Newberry Trail is open off Lawe Street to the Telulah park area

Thus, you can get through west on College or Washington until about 9:10 and north on Lawe by about 9:20 there is only about a 10-15 minute window of no way out of the downtown area, except for emergencies.

We realize that this will be an inconvenience to you and hope this notice will help with your morning planning. If you are home, we’d love to have you come out and cheer on the participants as we attempt to raise over $200,000 to fight cancer. Thank you.

Can’t beat us? Join Us! As a thank you for your support, please use the discount code 22NEIGHBOR to get $5.00 off your registration fee when you register for the Sole Burner 5K Walk/Run at www.soleburner.org.

Thank you for your support!

The Lawrence community is invited to the May 13 inauguration of President Laurie Carter in Memorial Chapel and a May 14 community celebration that will be highlighted by a Brighter Together Picnic on Main Hall Green.

Students, faculty, and staff are invited to register for the inauguration ceremony. The light-filled celebration will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, May 13. Inauguration ceremony tickets require advanced registration. The ceremony also will be livestreamed at go.lawrence.edu/inauguration.

A day of celebratory events will follow on Saturday, May 14, marking both this historic inauguration and the 175th anniversary since Lawrence’s founding in 1847. The festivities include a Brighter Together Picnic on Main Hall Green from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (followed by a closing ceremony), featuring food, live music, games, other entertainment, and a community resource fair with area nonprofits that have been partners with Lawrence through the years. Our neighbors in Appleton and the greater Fox Cities are being invited to gather with the Lawrence community on campus. The day also includes various exhibits, productions, and student, faculty, and alumni presentations. Details of the day’s events can be found on the inauguration page at lawerence.edu.

The May 13-14 weekend will be one of the signature events of the year-long 175th celebration.

We hope you’ll join your fellow Lawrentians for this historic and celebratory weekend.

UPDATE: President Carter to sign Climate Commitment on Earth Day

Note: This event has been moved to the Nathan Marsh Pusey Room in the Warch Campus Center due to the expectation of rain this afternoon. Masking and other Honor the Pledge protocols will be in place.

Students, faculty, and staff are invited to witness President Laurie Carter sign a Climate Commitment at 4 p.m. Friday. The Climate Commitment is sponsored by Second Nature, a national organization that works with colleges and universities across the country to help accelerate climate action.

“I am impressed by Lawrence’s longstanding commitment to foster a culture of sustainability, from the work of the Sustainability Steering Committee, to the robust student engagement with initiatives like recycling and the SLUG garden, to the campus solar panels that generate 30,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity each year, to the Net Zero Björklunden project,” President Carter said in a message to campus earlier this week. “I also believe it is time for Lawrence to take the next step.”

The signing ceremony comes on Earth Day. It will take place at 4 p.m. in front of Main Hall. If rain remains in the forecast, the ceremony will be moved to the Nathan Marsh Pusey Room in the Warch Campus Center. (If indoors, masking and other pandemic protocols will be in place.)

“I am excited for Lawrence to join the institutions across the state and country that have made this vital commitment,” President Carter said in her message. “It is an important reflection of our values and the university’s dedication to a sustainable future. A key component of the Climate Commitment is the development of a comprehensive Climate Action Plan for Lawrence, which includes carbon neutrality and resilience.”

Treats will be available after the ceremony.

Coming soon: 17 Days of Kindness
