New-look Library OneSearch goes live Sunday, 9/15!

We’re pleased to announce that Library OneSearch (http://go.lawrence.edu/onesearch/) will have a new look as the school year begins!  The new look will go live Sunday, September 15.

OneSearch’s current interface is four years old this fall (that’s about 100 in internet years) and, based on user research, Ex Libris (our system vendor) has made some refinements to the product that will improve your library research experience.

Functionality remains much the same: you’ll still be able to search the Library’s catalog PLUS hundreds of thousands of articles, images, etc. at the same time, link to full-text when it’s available, see what you have checked out, renew your Library materials, and much, much more. It just looks a little different.

The official debut isn’t till Sunday, but you can have a sneak peek right now!  Go to: https:/lawrence-primo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/primo-explore/search?sortby=rank&vid=NUI_01LAW_INST&lang=en_US.

Be sure to sign in and check out My Favorites (pushpin icon) and My Library Card (Menu > card icon).  All your saved records and searches have migrated from old E-Shelf & Queries to My Favorites.  All your loans, requests, etc. have migrated from old My Account to My Library Card.  (You’ll note that the old folders metaphor from e-Shelf has been dropped in favor of “labels.”  But no worries:  labels work the same way folders did.)

As always, let us know if you have questions about OneSearch (or other library-related things): http://www.lawrence.edu/library/departments/reference/ask  We’re here to help.

And happy researching!

Faculty and Staff Meal Swipes

Starting this fall, faculty and staff can sign up for a block of 25 meals for a low price of $150.00.  The meals (swipes) can be used at any lunch, brunch or dinner in Andrew Commons (Warch Campus Center).  At $6 per meal, the cost is significantly lower than the door price plus you can swipe in one guest.  Better yet, the meals never expire (unless you leave LU employment).  To purchase a block of meals, simply go to the Employee Services tab on Voyager and follow the instructions.

Were you a First Generation student?

“Were you a First Generation student – first in your immediate family to pursue a four-year higher education degree? Would you be interested in being of support to our first generation students throughout their time at Lawrence?

If your answer to both of these questions is yes, contact Rose Wasielewski, Associate Dean of Students and Dean of the Sophomore Class, at rose.wasielewski@lawrence.edu to indicate your interest. Your name will be added to a catalog of faculty and staff who also identify as first gen students. Those who do will get pins and door signs that they can choose to sport for students to easily recognize who their extra supports are.

Thanks for your support of this population, regardless of whether you self-identify in this way. First generation students come to us typically with less knowledge about how the system of higher education works and may need to ask more questions or more clarifying questions – however they may not always feel comfortable doing so because they do not want to appear “behind” in some way to their peers. Your support in taking an extra step to explain a process or procedure further may help ensure everyone is understanding the expectations of them as students or how to navigate a situation.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Rose at rose.wasielewski@lawrence.edu, 920-832-7203, or her office room 203 in Raymond House.”

New LU Insider Coming

Starting this Fall Term, the LU Insider newsletter will be getting a new look! In an effort to make it a more convenient and enjoyable communication, your friends in Communications will be working to provide more information about upcoming events, University news, accomplishments worth celebrating, and other fun and useful tidbits along with the usual announcements.

New Submission Guidelines

  • Deadline: All submissions for the Thursday morning LU Insider are due Wednesday at noon.
  • Submissions: Designated staff members from across campus can submit posts by logging in here. If you would like to submit a post but do not have access, contact Mackenzie.m.huber@lawrence.edu
  • Frequency: No announcement will be allowed to appear in consecutive LU Insider newsletters. Submit announcements strategically.
  • Events: To have an event listed in the “Events Next Week” section of the LU Insider newsletter, it must be on the Events Calendar. The Office of Communications reserves the right to curate the list for length. Recurring events will not appear in the section. Posts that are strictly public event announcements will no longer be included as LU Insider posts.
  • Headlines: Write headlines with a purpose so that people get the main idea of the announcement from the headline.
  • First Sentence(s): The first sentence or two of a post should mention all essential information and details.
  • Photos and Graphics: For the sake of accessibility, no graphics or photos with text will be allowed in LU Insider posts unless all the information is also written as text in the post. Photos are welcome at the end of posts as long as alt text is included.
  • Category and Audience: Always select the proper category for the post before submitting for approval. The LU Insider will no longer be separated into student and faculty/staff emails, so make sure content is appropriate for all audiences. Before submitting for approval, continue to select intended audience(s), as faculty/staff announcements will be denoted.
  • Contact: Mackenzie.m.huber@lawrence.edu

The Office of Communications reserves the right to curate the LU Insider posts that appear in the email summary.

The deadline for registering is Sept. 12.

Freedom Lifted tours provide opportunities to meet with Civil Rights movement veterans and local experts and visit important spaces.

The fee is $2,500 per person, with departure from Memphis. For details, contact Mark Breseman at 920-832-6519 or mark.d.breseman@lawrence.edu
