Call for 2021-2022 Convocation Nominations

Dear Lawrence Community,

I write to solicit your nominations for the 2021-2022  Lawrence Convocation Series and the 2022 commencement ceremony. Over the years the Convocation Series has featured a wide range of distinguished speakers, including writers, artists, activists, scientists, scholars, and journalists. The commencement speaker customarily receives an honorary degree from Lawrence in recognition of their accomplishments.

Please email me the names of people you would like to see deliver a convocation and/or receive an honorary degree at commencement. Any additional information you would like to include about them will also be appreciated.

Emergency Grant Funding Available

We know many students have incurred extraordinary or unplanned expenses in the wake of the changes brought on by the global pandemic. I write today to let you know emergency grant funding is available to assist with some of these expenses incurred during Fall Term 2020.

Thanks to donor-supported institutional funds, as well as remaining funds the university received from the CARES Act via a grant from the Department of Education, emergency grant funding is available for all Lawrentians—regardless of citizenship status.

Emergency grant funding for Fall Term 2020 is limited to expenses for technology and housing. Technology expenses include the purchase or repair of a computer/laptop, internet service, and/or required software to complete coursework. (Please note: grant funding may only cover a portion of the total expense. Additionally, expenses for housing and internet service are limited to students living off campus during Fall Term 2020.)

The deadline to apply for Fall Term 2020 emergency grant funding is 4:59pm CT on Friday, September 18, 2020. For more information and to apply, click here

Stay well,
Ryan

Testing for faculty and staff update

What to do if you did not input your designation for working on-campus this fall term and thus did not receive a testing date/time:

There is still time for you to be tested. Please email coronainfo@lawrence.edu as soon as possible and we will let you know of the available times for testing.

Please note that testing is only for individuals who are NOT exhibiting any symptoms of COVID-19. If you feel sick or are exhibiting any symptoms on the day of your test, do not come to campus for the test.

Energy Efficiency Work on Campus

Lawrence University entered a performance contract with Johnson Controls to perform energy efficiency initiatives on campus. A performance contract means that the cost of the work is paid for by the savings gained from the more efficient replacement systems. The work will run from September 1st through the end of May 2021 and will include a lighting retrofit for nineteen buildings, a chiller upgrade in Music Drama and fume hood upgrades in Steitz and Youngchild. Johnson Controls employees will be on campus daily during this period in most public campus buildings. There is no work taking place in small houses. The lighting retrofit will run from September 1st – January 7th. The chiller upgrade in Music Drama will run from October 19th -February 5th , and the fume hood upgrades in Steitz and Youngchild will run from September 12th – March 30th. We appreciate your patience as these important cost saving and energy efficient measures are implemented. Please contact Facilities at 920-832-6602 with any questions!

Fall Term Move-In Shuttle Information

LUCC Student Welfare Committee is running a shuttle to pick up students from the Airport and Bus Station on arrival days from the 8th-12th. This service is FREE and we will be providing you with snacks. You have a responsibility to your fellow Lawrentians to minimize possible exposure to COVID-19 as much as possible. We ask you to use this service in lieu of rideshare apps or public transportation if you are arriving on September 8th, 10th, or 12th to do our part to minimize community spread in Appleton and reducing the risk of bringing COVID-19 back onto campus. Thank you!

Campus Compact Safe Elections Project

Hello Lawrence community! My name is Hannah Baron and I’m a student recruiter for the Campus Compact Safe Elections Project. The goal of the project is to encourage nonpartisan election engagement among young people – specifically young people as poll workers. Right now there is a national poll worker shortage due to COVID-19 because of its impact on people over the age of 60. If this is still the case when the election comes around, this means limited and potentially biased polling locations that could sway the vote one way or the other.

Being a poll worker is an integral part of upholding our democracy. By being a poll worker you can ensure that everyone has the ability and access to cast their vote. Poll workers are needed throughout the country so if in November you will be living in the state where you are registered please consider becoming a poll worker. In most states, this is a paid opportunity. For more information on your specific county please visit the website for your county’s registrar of voters.

Lastly, if you are unable to be a poll worker but are eligible to vote, PLEASE REGISTER AND VOTE.For more information regarding Campus Compact please visit compact.org/education-for-democracy/safe-elections-project/faq
