Come join in the fun up in Bjorklunden for the weekend!

  • There will be a copy of the room chart and the floor plan on the registration table at the main entrance. You’ll find your room on the floor plan and make yourself at home!
  • Rooms will be set up Student Program Style. Which means linens will be in the rooms – but beds will not be made
  • No meals will be served and the commercial kitchen will NOT available for personal use
  • However the catering kitchen with ice machine and refrigerator will be available. The catering kitchen is located off of Vail Hall across from the elevator.
  • As for meals – please plan on sampling local fare, having picnics, using the catering kitchen for easy prep meals, etc. As mentioned, there is an ice machine in the catering kitchen – so you could keep a cooler in your car and picnic on the grounds or while out and about exploring the county!
  • If you do plan on eating here – please bring disposable dinnerware as the commercial dishwasher will NOT available and there will not be any staff to clean up after you.
  • There are also small refrigerators located throughout the building – one each in the Dining Room, Lakeside and North. Additionally there is a full size refrigerator in the Mud Room. The Mud Room is located next to Lakeside
  • There will not be staff on hand to clean up over the weekend – so please plan on being self-sufficient while here!

New External Email Communications System Coming

After a thorough review of alternative external email providers, the offices of communications and technology services have identified a new provider. Effective August 1, we will no longer send non-campus email through Informz. Instead, we will begin using MailChimp for external communications (Alumni, Development, etc.)  Please note, we will continue to use Outlook as our internal campus email provider.

MailChimp was selected for several reasons – most notably due to their user-friendly templates, ability to integrate with Banner as well as cost savings vs Informz.

All department email administrators and their department heads should plan to attend one of two or three alternative training sessions, led by Director of Digital Communications, Lauren Erlandson. Administrators will learn the nuts and bolts of the new system. Department heads will also benefit, since Lauren will discuss best practices, analytics reports, compliance with CAN-SPAM laws, LU’s email policies, etc.

Lauren will share training dates with current Informz administrators and department heads. However, individuals who would like to learn more about email in general and MailChimp in particular, should contact Lauren (x6746) to make sure they are aware of training dates.

Email has become one of our most important communication channels and will continue to play an important role in reaching our various audiences. Using it properly can make a big difference in whether your email is read or deleted.

Associate Vice President of Communications

LU On the Move – Wins Top 50 Most Active Companies

Lawrence University has been designated as one of the Top 50 most active companies in the Large Business category of the national On the Move Company Challenge. The On the Move challenge, developed by the Wellness Council of America (WELCOA), partners with organizations around the country to take a stand for more movement and improved cultures of wellbeing for employees. The challenge has been shown to cut sedentary behavior in half and create a groundswell of support for more physical activity during the workday. Eighty-four companies representing more than 85,000 employees participated in this 12-week online challenge spanning April, May and June of 2017.

The top three that earned more than 10,000 points were Pete Gilbert, Donna Matey and Jami Rogers.

Thank you to everyone that participated in the challenges and moved more during your day.  Have a great summer.

August 9: Lawrence and World War I

The United States entered the first World War, which had started in Europe almost three years earlier, in April 1917. The war had profound and lasting effects at Lawrence. Enrollment plummeted as students enlisted; anti-German sentiment took hold; students were quarantined with Spanish influenza; and the college contracted with the government to host a unit of the Student Army Training Corps. Join Archivist Erin Dix for a discussion of this often-overlooked period of our history, featuring documents from the LU Archives.

August 23: Movement and Mindfulness in the Mudd

You’ve heard about mindfulness and the scientifically-proven benefits that practitioners enjoy, including increased productivity, improved concentration and mental clarity, heightened compassion and self-awareness, better sleep, and deeper relaxation. Join us to learn some simple mindfulness techniques and gentle yoga stretches you can do at your desk. The practice is simple. Showing up is the challenge!
