Help for the Homeless Hygiene drive

Reminder! Beta Theta Pi will be picking up donations for the “Help for the Homeless” Hygiene drive this Saturday, March 3.  Please leave your donations in the boxes available in most buildings or on your office door knob (if you received a bag in advance) or email Tom Goldberg for pick-up.  Lawrence was not able to secure many donations for this cause in the past so your help is much appreciated. Additional information about this drive can be found in the original message below.

Not having access to hygiene products can mean not staying in school for children who get bullied due to their resulting lack of hygiene, and increased risk of diseases for homeless individuals of all ages. In particular, communicable diseases that can easily be mitigated through sustained hygiene often are able to spread in populations that don’t have access to above hygiene products.

All donations can be placed in the collection boxes located on the third floor of the Warch Campus Center, the third floor of the Wellness Center, the Steitz atrium, and the lobby of the Conservatory. In addition, some of you may find a bag with an information card on your door, in which case you can simply leave the donation there, and Beta Theta Pi will simply pick it up after the drive ends on Saturday, March 3rd. “Help for The Homeless” Hygiene Drive

This week kicks off our campus’ branch of the “Help for The Homeless” Hygiene Drive! Currently, local homeless shelters in the Fox Valley and elsewhere receive no federal funding for hygiene products such as shampoo, soap, deodorant, and toothpaste, and rely almost exclusively on donations from the community to provide for these needs. This drive is also occurring off campus in Appleton and in other areas in the state of Wisconsin.

Outdoor Recreation Club Spring Break trips

ORC organizes subsidized backcountry trips to places all across the country, and sends ~100 students on trips every year. ORC trips have no requirement for any previous backcountry experience, the club provides all necessary gear, and can also can offer additional financial support to cover trip costs.

Now Accepting Applications for the Student Sustainability Fund!

The Student Sustainability Fund offers students competitive grants of up to $2,500 for sustainability focused projects that may consist of research, internships, volunteer or service projects, class projects, or student group initiatives. Examples include: developing educational tools and programs for conservation efforts, researching the feasibility of a campus bike-share program, removal of invasive species on campus, funding for travel to and from an internship, a stipend for internships or service projects.

Any Lawrence student that will be enrolled during the term of their proposed project is eligible to apply.

Dancing with the Profs

February 3 • 7pm • Esch-Hurvis, Warch Campus Center

Professors Amy Nottingham-Martin, Ben Rinehart, and Nancy Wall will perform choreographed swing style dances with members of the Lawrence Swing Club.  This event benefits Heifer International, which is a nonprofit that provides livestock to poor communities to help fight poverty and give them a source of food and income.

There is no admission fee but the group will be accepting donations to Heifer International. Open to all faculty, staff, and students!

MLK, Jr. Day of Service at Lawrence University

What does MLK Jr Day mean at Lawrence?

MLK, Jr. Day of Service at Lawrence University is an annual event that invites the entire Lawrence community to continue honoring the ideas of Dr. King and the civil rights movements that continue to this day.  Students, staff and faculty will honor the continuance of the efforts of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr through learning, serving, and celebrating.

Volunteering on MLK Jr. Day provides an opportunity for you to:

  • Give something back to an organization that has improved our community
  • Make a difference to the lives of others (including our students!)
  • Address disparities of access to basic human rights
  • Step away from work to think about your own commitment to civic engagement

In addition to a speaker who will address an important social justice issue impacting our health, a variety of both on-campus and off-campus opportunities are available to all.  Each activity is a student led initiative that benefits the community and helps Lawrentians solidify the value of learning as you serve. Select from a number of options, any of which will benefit a variety of agencies in the Appleton area.
