LU Unplugged – February 7th- Save the date!

This winter, take a moment to unplug on campus.

Electronics keep us connected to a larger world. Right? But connection goes far beyond what the electronic world offers.

On February 7th, the Thursday of Reading Period, turn in your phone and/or your most used electronic device at the beginning of the day and take part in activities that will nourish and recharge your personal human battery.

Keep your eyes open for upcoming details on LU Unplugged activities, plus where and how to sign up. Plan on being unplugged from approximately 11am until 7pm.  Participants will need to sign up in advance to be able to take part in any planned end of day meal activities, and space may be limited.

Don’t care about the details and can’t wait to sign up? Interested in hosting an activity?  Just need a few more details?
Contact Dean Linda Morgan-Clement.  linda.morgan-clement@lawrence.edu or spiritual.religious.life@lawrence.edu to inquire, or call 920-832-7167.

Updates regarding pedestrian safety, street crossings and lighting

Dear Lawrence Community,

Welcome back to campus and happy new year!

As you may have already a noticed, several changes have been made to the College Avenue pedestrian crossings, as well as surrounding intersections. A new push button-activated warning light system was recently installed in the mid-block crossings on College Avenue. This new system will reduce the number of false activations of the lights and make it clearer to pedestrians when lights are flashing. The crosswalks are also more accessible to the visually impaired thanks to audio beacons at the crossings. In addition, new pedestrian lighting has been added to the southeast corner of College and Lawe Streets and the northeast corner of Lawe and Alton Streets, improving visibility for both pedestrians and drivers.

Even with these improvements, we all must be vigilant when crossing any street, as we are never completely protected from inattentive drivers. As you approach crosswalks or traffic intersections, be sure to pay attention to traffic from all directions, avoid cell phone use and walk briskly while crossing the street, and walk bicycles across intersections.

If you have suggestions, questions, or concerns about pedestrian safety, please direct them to Assistant to the President Jake Woodford (Jacob.a.woodford@lawrence.edu; or 920-832-6850).

Have a wonderful start to the new term.

Sincerely,

Christopher D. Card

Vice President for Student Life

MLK Jr. Day of Service – Monday, January 21, 2019

MLK, Jr. Day of Service at Lawrence University is an annual event that invites the entire Lawrence community to continue honoring the ideas of Dr. King and the civil rights movements that continue to this day.  Students, staff and faculty will honor the continuance of the efforts of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr through learning, serving, and celebrating.

Title: More than Meets the Eye: Engaging with Controversial Art
Speakers: Beth A. Zinsli and Elizabeth Carlson
Topic: Engaging with Controversial Art

We often assume that visual art is for aesthetic contemplation and pleasure, but both historical and contemporary artists frequently address difficult topics like racism, colonialism, and social injustice in important ways. Interpretations of artworks are also not fixed; subject matter that was conventional in 1863, for example, may be understood very differently by audiences today. This program will examine ways to meaningfully engage with potentially controversial artworks, even those that may not seem controversial or difficult at first glance.
