Save the Date: Duck Duck Democracy Event on March 28

Duck Duck Democracy is an opportunity for students to become civically engaged.

There is a Wisconsin state election coming up on Tuesday, April 4, and this event will allow students to become familiar with the voting process and educational resources. This is a space for students to explore what democracy means to them and learn about meaningful civic participation. Students can learn about voter registration, voter ID cards, transportation to the polls, ballot information, and more. Duck Duck Democracy will feature games and activities, free food, speakers from the League of Women Voters, and prizes!

Applications for Spring 2024 French program in Senegal due April 1

No fooling! Off-Campus Programs has extended its deadline for accepting applications to the Francophone Seminar in Dakar, Senegal program until April 1, 2023. You can apply now by opening our online application and logging in with your Lawrence credentials.

The Dakar, Senegal program is a French-immersion program open to all majors. The only prerequisite is that students have successfully completed French 202 (or have the equivalent knowledge of the language) by the time the program starts. Students who apply now and are accepted prior to completing French 202 will be accepted conditionally until language requirements are met. Students travel with French Department faculty for this program.

Dakar, Senegal is a thriving city on the Atlantic coast of West Central Africa. As a student on this program, you will fully immerse yourself in this vibrant Afro-Francophone culture while living with a host family and taking classes in Dakar.

So what are you waiting for? Come experience the joy of Senegalese culture, music, art, dance, and more while at the same time improving your French and expanding your worldview.

Major Declaration Day Celebration

Sophomore Major Declaration Day (February 15) is just around the corner! Declaring by this date will give sophomores time to get connected to an advisor in the major before advance registration advising begins in the spring.

All sophomores are invited to join faculty and staff for a MAJOR DECLARATION DAY CELEBRATION on Wednesday, February 15 (12:30-2PM) at Warch Campus Center – Pusey/Gallery. There will be sweet treats, games, prizes, photo opportunities, and more. You’ll even be able to declare right at the celebration!

Creating Opportunity: How to Align Outside Skills and Interests with Your Career

In this talk, I will share my path to Bloomberg’s Engineering department and how the experiences and interests I developed before I joined the company have influenced my subsequent career journey. We’ll talk about my starting as an entry-level software engineer, recognizing opportunities to grow inside and outside my role, getting involved with philanthropy and DEI initiatives at Bloomberg, and transitioning to people leadership. We will conclude with a fun segment about the Bloomberg Puzzle Team, what makes a good puzzle, and tips on both solving and creating one.

There is still time to apply! If you are planning on studying abroad or on a domestic off-campus program during the next academic year (2023-2024), applications are due January 25, 2023. This deadline is for all affiliated programs.

Applications for the London Centre and Francophone Seminar in Dakar, Senegal are due March 1, 2023.

Author and journalist Peter Copeland to present Povolny lecture

Peter Copeland ’79, a former war correspondent and Washington bureau chief, will discuss “Journalists at War” in a Jan. 24 lecture at Lawrence University, part of the 2022-23 Povolny Lecture Series in International Studies.

The lecture will be at 7:30 p.m. in Wriston Auditorium. It is free and open to the public.

Copeland has been an author and journalist for more than 40 years. He was a Washington bureau chief for E.W. Scripps Company and has covered conflicts around the world. He has authored five books. His most recent, Finding the News: Adventures of a Young Reporter, was published in 2019.

Spoerl Lecture Series in Science and Society set for Jan. 11

The Spoerl Lecture Series in Science and Society will present Cedar Creek Revisited: 100 Years of Old Field Succession from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11 in Youngchild Hall 121.

The lecture will be given by Adam Clark, assistant professor at the Institute for Biology, University of Graz.

The old field experiment at Cedar Creek in central Minnesota is one of the largest and longest running grassland successional studies on earth.
