Sunday Open Movement and Music Jam

Come play, dance, and make music at the Open Jam.
This is a participatory event – join in!

Sunday at Noon.
Located at Lawrence University in Esch Hurvis, level 2 of Warch Campus Center.

Everyone is a dancer, and everyone is a musician. This improvisational movement and music jam is a space to try things out, to practice creating, to practice playing, to just be in space together.

Everyone is welcome. (all ages, all communities [LU or not], all abilities, all identities.) You decide how you participate in a jam space. You may make sound/music, you may dance, you may bring an instrument, you may rest, you may watch…

To start, there will be a brief, physical warm up to the space and each other facilitated by LU dance professor – Margaret Paek. You can come and go as you please during the jam, though you are encouraged and welcome to join the opening and closing circles to process together.

Mark Charles is a speaker, writer and consultant who recently moved to Washington DC from the Navajo Reservation. The son of an American woman of Dutch heritage and a Navajo man. Mark seeks to understand the complexities of American history regarding race, culture and faith in order to help forge a path of healing and reconciliation for the nation.

This event is Co-sponsored by Lawrence University’s Office of Spiritual and Religious Life, Lawrence University Native Association (LUNA), Lawrence Christian Fellowship (LCF), ESTHER and First Congregational UCC of Appleton.

Sunday Taizé at Memorial Presbyterian

Candles, scripture, song and chant make up the liturgy of this ecumenical service. Taizé this week is held at Memorial Presbyterian Church. Service begins at 5:30pm.

As the available daylight decreases with each day, let the light of the candles and the spirit of the song further prepare you for what’s to come.

Worship-Yom Kippur and Taizé

Taizé

On Sunday, October 6, the Lawrence community is welcome to gather at All Saints Episcopal for an interfaith contemplative worship experience. Join with community, candles, silence, chant and prayer from the Christian tradition.
Light dinner to follow services.

Yom Kippur

On Tuesday and Wednesday, October 8-9, services for Yom Kippur will be held at Moses Montefiore and B’nai Israel. Lawrentians are welcome to meet at the Wriston turnaround for walking groups and shuttles.

Meet Tuesday, 10/8
at 5:15 to walk to Moses Montefiore
at 6:30pm for the shuttle to B’nai Israel

Meet Wednesday, 10/9
at 8:45am to walk to Moses Monetefiore
at 9am for the MORNING shuttle to B’Nai Israel.
at 1:30pm for the AFTERNOON shuttle to B’Nai Israel.

Shuttles for Rosh Hashanah

Students wishing to attend services for Rosh Hashanah in Oshkosh at B’nai Israel (reform congregation) can travel by LU van with one of our authorized drivers. Shuttles will pick up and drop off at the Wriston Turnaround on the following schedule

Student Grief Group

As a collaboration between Spiritual and Religious Life and Wellness Services, this group is designed to support all students regardless of religious background or belief system. 

We are asking to be notified in advance if students plan to attend – but it is not required. Please contact any of the following people if you are a student and would like to be a part of this group.

Fourth Friday lunch this week

The tradition of fourth Fridays started a few years ago, and has been a place for cross connection between departments. Stop by Sabin House for this staff and faculty discussion experience on September 27.

Dean Morgan-Clement’s discussion topic:
Peripheral Vision: I have up horseback riding again and one of the lessons I am relearning the art of using peripheral vision.  To keep your center and balance on a horse you need to activate a “wide field of vision.”

I am inviting you to bring stories and reflections from your own life about the paradoxical practice of activating peripheral vision and ways that it might allow us all to keep our center and balance in new ways.
