Baccalaureate – June 8

Please join us on the Saturday of commencement weekend for Baccalaureate: the multifaith expression of the spiritual journey of the class of 2019. As the seniors have made their journey through Lawrence, the education of the mind has been just one of the goals. Along the way, a spiritual journey has also occurred. Baccalaureate will have student designed expressions, call to prayer and tributes through song, written word, and movement. Their chosen words, movement and music are sourced from the sacred and the secular, the ancient as well as the contemporary. Those on campus and their families are welcomed to the chapel to take part in this service. Join us in sharing this spiritual telling of the Lawrence journey. Saturday, June 8 11am Lawrence Memorial Chapel

Ramadan beginning May 6

Join the Office of Spiritual and Religious Life as we move forward in support of the activities and traditions of Ramadan.

Look for campus posters to educate yourself on the significance and meaning of this holiday, read the Leading with Diversity blog for perspectives on working with and teaching to Muslims during Ramadan, and visit the Spiritual and Religious Life webpage to understand how Lawrence is supporting the Muslim community.

Ramadan is approaching and a host of services will be available during this time of fasting, prayer and reflection for the Muslim community.

In 2019, Ramadan will run approximately May 6 through June 5, according to the Muslim lunar calendar.

Ramadan

Ramadan in U.S. culture is a place where the two worlds of observant Muslims can be placed slightly out of alignment: the practical world of school or work and the religious world of faithful observance.  Muslim employees, co-workers, and students may be fasting for Ramadan, a chosen practice that those observing believe brings them closer to God. As colleagues to students and workers in a space where others might be fasting, we should educate ourselves about what fasting means in this context and how it can affect others. For example,  we should take into consideration that the absence of food and water during daylight hours may affect how that student or worker manages their time due to changes in concentration and energy.    Continue reading more on the Leading with Diversity blog.
